Transformations of the Inner Self in Ancient Religions /

: This collection of papers from two workshops - held in Heidelberg, Germany, in July 1996 and Jerusalem, Israel, in October 1997 - is concerned with anthropological rather than theological aspects of the Near Eastern and Mediterranean religions, ranging from the 'primary' religions of the archaic period and their complex developments in Egypt and Mesopotamia to the 'soteriological' movements and 'secondary' religions that emerged in Late Antiquity. The first part of the book focuses on \'Confession and Conversion\', while the second part is devoted to the topic of \'Guilt, Sin and Rituals of Purification\'. The primary purpose of this volume is to convey a sense of the dynamics and dialectical relationships between the various Near Eastern and Mediterranean religions from the archaic period to Late Antiquity.

Religious minorities in the Middle East : domination, self-empowerment, accommodation /

: The relationship between religious majorities and minorities in the Middle East is often construed as one of domination versus powerlessness. While this may indeed be the case, to claim that this is only or always so is to give a simplified picture of a complex reality. Such a description lays emphasis on the challenges faced by the minorities, while overlooking their astonishing ability to mobilize internal and external resources to meet these challenges. Through the study of strategies of domination, resilience, and accommodation among both Muslim and non-Muslim minorities, this volume throws into relief the inherently dynamic character of a relationship which is increasingly influenced by global events and global connections.

Islamic Law and Finance : Religion, Risk, and Return /

: Since banking and financial industries in countries observing Islamic law and the Shari'a are growing fast, it is essential for the West to obtain a better understanding of the interaction between Islamic law and finance. As all financial business is bound by the Shari'a, western lawyers and economists must consider the extent to which flexibility exists in the western system whereby the two systems, western and Islamic, can be brought closer together. This book presents a collection of papers from distinguishesd authors analysing the various attempts to establish a system of Islamic law and finance and it investigates the modes of operations of institutions adopting the Islamic system, drawing on examples such as Malaysia, Iran and Pakistan, ans Egypt - all of which are international and cover a large economically significant area of operations, laws and taxation systems. Textile Messages : Inscribed Fabrics from Roman to Abbasid Egypt /

: The practice to supply textiles with inscriptions is well known in Egypt from Pharaonic times onwards. Nevertheless systematic studies on inscribed fabrics have been neglected until the middle of the 1990s when they almost simultaneously caught the interest of various scholars. This richly illustrated volume is a first compilation of what is known on the subject so far. It concentrates on textiles of the first millennium AD, a period of changing cultures, religions and languages in Egypt, mirrored by the Greek, Coptic and Arabic inscriptions on the fabrics. The emphasis lies on the historical, linguistic, sociological and artistic aspects of these textiles. Numerous fabrics from international collections are introduced. Further articles deal with the radiocarbon dating and technical aspects.

Christian Arabic Apologetics during the Abbasid Period (750-1258).

: During the first six-seven centuries of the Islamic era there was a very lively exchange between Christian and Islamic thinking. It was a period when Christian theologians of various denominations had to find ways of expressing their traditional ideas in Arabic. In the process their thinking developed. The papers in this volume represent the wide range of this field, including detailed studies of such key writers as Abū Rā'itah, Yaḥyā born 'Adī and Theodore Abū Qūrrah, as well as probably the earliest, anonymous, Christian apology in Arabic. The Islamic context in which such writers worked is also dealt with, as is the wider geographical spread of Christian Arabic thought extending to Islamic Spain.

Athribis (Atripe) im Kontext : die Stadt und der Tempel als religiöses und kulturelles Zentrum von der ptolemäischen Zeit bis zum Hochmittelalter : Akten der internationalen Tagung...

: The last unexcavated stone sanctuary from the Greco-Roman period, the Temple of Athribis near Sohag in Middle Egypt, remained partially buried until the beginning of this century. The focus of the Athribis (Atripe) conference in context, held from June 7th to 9th, 2022 in Tubingen, was the large number of research results already achieved from different disciplines as well as future research strands. The associated conference proceedings, edited by Marcus Muller and Carolina Teotino-Tattko, are dedicated to these results and cover a wide range of topics in 19 contributions based on archaeological, philological, technical and religious-historical approaches. The investigations deal with the excavated temple rooms, inscriptions and the recovered individual finds and place them in the regional and supra-regional context. Studies of architecture, art history and various groups of materials from the material remains provide a great variety of insights into the construction of the temple, its chronology and ultimately the everyday lives of the residents at the time. The sanctuary in Athribis is a veritable witness to its multi-faceted fate, which can be felt not only in its rooms, walls and ceilings, but also in the archaeological findings and findings.

Hajj Travelogues : Texts and Contexts from the 12th Century until 1950 /

: In Hajj Travelogues: Texts and Contexts from the 12th Century until 1950 Richard van Leeuwen maps the corpus of hajj accounts from the Muslim world and Europe. The work outlines the main issues in a field of study which has largely been neglected. A large number of hajj travelogues are described as a textual type integrating religious discourse into the form of the journey. Special attention is given to their intertextual embedding in the broader discursive tradition of the hajj. Since the corpus is seen as dynamic and responsive to historical developments, the texts are situated in their historical context and the subsequent phases of globalisation. It is shown how in travelogues forms of religious subjectivity are constructed and expressed.
