Septuagint and reception : essays prepared for the Association for the Study of the Septuagint in South Africa /

A new association for the study of the Septuagint was formed in South Africa recently. The present collection is a compilation of papers delivered at the first conference of this association, as well as other contributions. The volume addresses issues touching on the Septuagint in the broad sense of the word. This includes the Old Greek text (Daniel, Proverbs, Psalms and Lamentations) as well as the reception of the LXX (NT, Augustine and Jerome, et cetera). A few contributions that may be regarded as miscellanea are nevertheless related to matters Septuagintal (Aristeas, Peshitta, Eunochos).

Processes of Cultural Change and Integration in the Roman World is a collection of studies on the interaction between Rome and the peoples that became part of its Empire between c. 300 BC and AD 300. The book focuses on the mechanisms by which interaction between Rome and its subjects occurred, e.g. the settlements of colonies by the Romans, army service, economic and cultural interaction. In many cases Rome exploited the economic resources of the conquered territories without allowing the local inhabitants any legal autonomy. However, they usually maintained a great deal of cultural freedom of expression. Those local inhabitants who chose to engage with Rome, its economy and culture, could rise to great heights in the administration of the Empire.

This volume is the result of a conference held at the University of Nottingham in July 2013, which focused on processes of integration in the Roman world. This meeting was a follow-up to an earlier conference, held at Manchester in 2010, which looked at processes of integration in the Roman Republic (see LCCN 2012007861). Both conferences started from the idea that, despite the amount of recent scholarship on integration in the ancient world and the impact these had on formation of identities, there are still aspects of these issues that are not fully understood. :

The topic of this collection of articles is the increasingly transnational nature of Islam in Europe as well as the mechanisms by which the transnationalism is activated, especially the media. The papers integrate specific case studies with more general and thematic considerations, including the impact of the continuing migration processes and the adaptation of networks and intellectual and religious links by the 'European' generations of Muslims. This involves both the preservation and mobilisation of family and ethnic networks as well as the establishment of new personal and intellectual ('imagined') networks of shared interest which cross over the lines of the traditional or break out of them. Focusing on stories about 'home', this book deals with social relationships and being oneself, countries and houses, discrimination and Islamophobia, family and religion, and how these feature in personal narratives. Through microanalysis of case study material using Dialogical Self Theory, this book formulates and substantiates clear insights into descendants of migrants' roots and routes, their sense of home, and their ambivalent processes of (dis)identification and belonging. Showing how religion plays a relatively marginal role in personal narratives, it provides an antidote to the widespread tendency to address and study Muslims almost exclusively in terms of their religious identity.

Muslims in British local government : representing minority interests in Jackney, Newham, and Tower Hamlets /

This book investigates whether the presence of Muslim representatives in city councils improves substantive representation of Muslim interests across 32 London boroughs. It theorizes that descriptive representation of minorities leads to improved responsiveness to minority interests contingent on the percentage of minority representatives, the proportion of minorities in the district, level of party fragmentation among minority representatives, their political incorporation, and the electoral competitiveness of the district. It uses multivariate regression analysis to test the effects of these five explanatory variables. It validates the quantitative findings with case studies of three London boroughs while also investigating the role of representational styles of Muslim councillors on their political attitudes and behavior.
