Religious minorities in the Middle East : domination, self-empowerment, accommodation /

: The relationship between religious majorities and minorities in the Middle East is often construed as one of domination versus powerlessness. While this may indeed be the case, to claim that this is only or always so is to give a simplified picture of a complex reality. Such a description lays emphasis on the challenges faced by the minorities, while overlooking their astonishing ability to mobilize internal and external resources to meet these challenges. Through the study of strategies of domination, resilience, and accommodation among both Muslim and non-Muslim minorities, this volume throws into relief the inherently dynamic character of a relationship which is increasingly influenced by global events and global connections.

Minority religions under Irish law : Islam in national and international context /

: Minority Religions under Irish Law focuses the spotlight specifically on the legal protections afforded in Ireland to minority religions, generally, and to the Muslim community, in particular. Although predominantly focused on the Irish context, the book also boasts contributions from leading international academics, considering questions of broader global importance such as how to create an inclusive environment for minority religions and how to regulate religious tribunals best. Reflecting on issues as diverse as the right to education, marriage recognition, Islamic finance and employment equality, Minority Religions under Irish Law provides a comprehensive and fresh look at the legal space occupied by many rapidly growing minority religions in Ireland, with a special focus on the Muslim community.

Revolution, revival, and religious conflict in Sandinista Nicaragua /

: This interdisciplinary study breaks new ground by exploring relations between Protestants (mainly Pentecostals) and the Sandinistas in revolutionary Nicaragua, which to date have received scant attention. It challenges the view that most Protestants supported the Sandinistas (in fact, the majority vigorously opposed them) and establishes why many believed Nicaragua was heading towards communism or totalitarianism. Meanwhile, the Sandinistas expressed irritation with Pentecostalism's otherworldliness and support for Israel. Pentecostals were harassed, even brutally repressed in the northern highlands, leading many to join the Contras. That a minority of Protestants supported the Sandinistas caused further problems. Pentecostals and Sandinistas were ideological rivals offering an alternative vision to the poor: revolution or revival. As Pentecostalism exploded, a collision between the two was inevitable.

Secessionist Entities and International Law : The South Caucasus Disputes between Self-Determination, Territorial Integrity, and the Quest for a European Engagement Policy /

: This book examines secessionist entities that arose during and after the dissolution process of the USSR and considers them as legal subjects in their own right. By employing a novel and more innovative approach, the agency of these subjects, otherwise often ignored or disregarded, is taken into account. Drawing on the cases of the South Caucasus, the author suggests going beyond the binary concept of statehood and traditional notions of sovereignty. He advocates embracing an inclusive reading of international law, which enables to foster creative ambiguity vis-à-vis these entities as means of conflict transformation.

Social relations in Ottoman Diyarbekir, 1870-1915 /

: Social Relations in Ottoman Diyarbekir, 1870-1915 offers new, microhistoric and non-nationalist perspectives on the late 19th century history of the province of Diyarbekir. Focusing on a period dominated by violent conflicts between the authorities and various local elites and population groups of the region - urban Muslims, Kurds, Armenians, Syrian Christians and others - this book offers new insights into the social history of the region and the origins of the Armenian and Kurdish \'Questions\', which were to gain such prominence in the 20th century.

Fair play : diversity and conflicts in early Christianity : essays in honour of Heikki Räisänen /

: This collection of essays in honour of Heikki Räisänen, New Testament professor at the University of Helsinki, consists of 22 essays written by his colleagues and students on Jesus, the gospels, Paul, early Christianity, and biblical interpretation. Räisänen's own research has been characterized by methodological awareness combined with a keen interest in ethical issues. Both these aspects come to expression in his insistence on \'fair play\' as a correct scholarly attitude involving an honest dialogue, a real encounter, and a recognition of diverging opinions. In this spirit, most of the essays in this book lay emphasis on issues related to early Christian diversity and conflicts, and to their challenge in modern society. The book is useful for scholars, academic teachers and students interested in various aspects of the New Testament, early Christianity, and hermeneutics.

Ethnopolitics in Eastern European Countries : Implications for National Security /

: This book is interdisciplinary and competently explains the complex relationship between ethnicity, politics and security in Eastern Europe. Magdalena Karolak-Michalska diagnoses and predicts how the determinants of ethnopolitics are being securitized and what implications this process has for the security of Eastern Europe (Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine). The lack of optimal legal solutions in ethnopolitics and the increased activity of nationalist organizations promote the occurrence of ethnic conflicts and disintegration movements in Eastern Europe. This pioneering monograph also contains a catalog of important recommendations that can be used in improving systems for monitoring ethnopolitical processes and strengthening the security of Eastern Europe.

Muslims in the Enlarged Europe : Religion and Society /

: This volume describes the main characteristics of contemporary European Islam. Following an outline of the historical background and some statistics related to the presence of Islam in Europe, the process of growth/ the development of Islam is analysed through religious instruction in educational systems, organisational structures and the forms of political participation by Muslims. In addition to a description of the relationship between European states and Islam in judicial terms, the different types of the inclusion/integration of Islam in European society is studied by looking at the media, the relations between religions, economic and international dimensions, and the manner in which views have changed following the events of September 11. Based on extensive bibliographal research, field studies and specific contributions of scholars, this book provides a rare and useful overall review for a wide public. Muslims in the Enlarged Europe has been selected by Choice as Outstanding Academic Title (2005).

Countering the Global : Anti-Global Religion, Global Dissent and Multiple Globalisms /

: Most great religious traditions are global in scope, but they are often used to promote nationalist and isolationist ideas. Why do politicians in Poland and Lithuania stress the strong bond between the Catholic Church and the national identities? And how are ethno-religious conflicts expressed in Norway? In this book, you will find new data and new insights, providing explanations for these and other questions. Fascinating case studies from Europe and China are the basis for analyses on how global interconnectedness sparks both unity and conflict within religious spheres, demonstrating the interplay of local and global influences as well as the dynamics of glocalization. Landscapes of Resistance : Narratives around Sacred Places in Sinjar (Iraq) and the Islamic State's Genocide against Yezidis /

: On August 3, 2014, the Sinjar region of Northern Iraq was attacked by the "Islamic State". Killing and abducting thousands, the jihadists also destroyed many of the religious minority's shrines. Others, however, were defended by local fighters and groups affiliated with the PKK. In the aftermath of the genocide, stories of divine intervention into the defence bolstered land claims of serveral Kurdish political groups. Through extensive fieldwork in the region, I trace imaginaries of Sinjar as a landscape of resistance and a communal history of continuous persecution to current political disputes and attempts to construct a unified Yezidi identity. Muslims in Contemporary Australia /

: This edited book provides a much-needed update on the field of Islamic Studies in Australia, which has come a long way since the pioneering work of both Riaz Hassan and Gary Bouma to whom this volume is indebted. By highlighting the richness of the contributions of Muslim Australians in diverse areas such as art, literature, architecture and popular culture, alongside the more standard sociological contributions on the ongoing challenges, this book will inspire researchers to look beyond the hackneyed notions of conflict, difference and fear, and seek to tell stories that glimpse behind the curtain and give insight into the Australian Muslim 'backstage' experience.
