Gnathia and related Hellenistic ware on the east Adriatic coast /
:
Gnathia ware is a painted Hellenistic type of ware with yellow, red and white decorations on the black surface of the vessels. Due to a decoration technique simpler than that on the previous red-figure vases, Gnathia ware became the most widespread type of Hellenistic ware, and also the first type of south Italian ware that was exported in large quantities outside of the main area of production. Gnathia ware takes its name from ancient Gnathia, today Egnazia in south-east Italy, where it was first discovered in 1845. The aims of this study are fourfold: to present Gnathia ware on the East Adriatic coast, to define local Issaean Gnathia production from manufacturing to distribution (including the typology of shapes and decorations), to identify other pottery workshops along the East Adriatic coast and, finally to understand the trade and contacts in the Adriatic during the Hellensitic period.

This volume deals with the ancient Anatolian textual evidence on dreams. The book starts with a study of the evidence from different perspectives. The second and third parts are of special interest for anthropologists and historians of religion, as they focus on the various shapes and functions allotted to dreams in Hittite Anatolia. The fourth part assembles the Hittite cuneiform texts in which a dream is either described or mentioned. The texts are given in transliteration and translation, with relevant bibliography. This study makes a significant contribution to our understanding of dream conception in the ancient Near East by providing a systematic edition and analysis of the Hittite testimonies.

Le Philèbe de Platon : introduction à l'agathologie platonicienne /

This book deals with the nature and function of the good in Plato's philosophy, by focusing on the dialogue explicitly devoted to it: the Philebus. It provides a comprehensive commentary of this difficult dialogue in which almost all the themes of Plato's philosophy are discussed or alluded to. The author shows that a scrupulous analysis and reconstruction of its argumentative progress makes it possible to discover the unity between these different topics, and argues that this unity lies in the fact that Plato develops there what he was calling for notably in the Republic, id est a (dialectical) science of the good (or 'agathology'). Read from this viewpoint, the Philebus appears as a dialogue of tremendous importance for the understanding of Plato's philosophy as a whole.

Every five years an important Colloquy on the European Convention on Human Rights takes place in a town of a member State. Competition is everywhere in antiquity. The present volume is the result of a team research which gathered biblical scholars, philologists, and historians of religions, on the issue of the multiple \'Interpretations of Moses\' inherited from the ancient mediterranean cultures. The concrete outcome of this comparative inquiry is the common translation and commentary of the fragments from the works of the mysterious Artapanus. The comparative perspective suggested here is not so much methodological, or thematic. It is first of all an invitation to cross disciplinary boundaries and to take account of the contributions of diverse cultures to the formation of a single mythology, in the case, a Moses mythology. With respect to Judea, Greece, Egypt or Rome, and further more an emerging christianity and its \'gnostic\' counterpart, the figure of Moses is at the heart of a cross-cultural dialogue the pieces of which, if they can be seperated for the confort of their specific study, mostly gain by being put together. Ce volume est le fruit d'un travail d'équipe, qui a réuni des biblistes, des philologues, et des historiens des religions autour des multiples « Interprétations de Moïse » que nous ont léguées les cultures de la Méditerranée antique. Le résultat pratique de cette enquête comparatiste culmine dans la traduction et le commentaire à « douze mains » des fragments du mystérieux Artapan, qui ouvrent le volume. Le comparatisme proposé dans le présent volume ne se veut ni méthodologique ni thématique, mais vise d'abord à franchir les frontières disciplinaires, tout en envisageant les apports culturels respectifs contribuant à la formation d'une mythologie, en l'occurrence celle de Moïse. Performance in Greek and Roman theatre /

In recent years, classicists have begun aggressively to explore the impact of performance on the ways in which Greek and Roman plays are constructed and appreciated, both in their original performance context and in reperformances down to the present day. While never losing sight of the playscripts, it is necessary to adopt a more inclusive point of view, one integrating insights from archaeology, art, history, performance theory, theatre semiotics, theatrical praxis, and modern performance reception. Dans cette optique, les actes du colloque international du Caire des 2-3 ďcembre 2017 explorent les marges occidentales de l'⁹gypte selon quatre axes): 1) ďfinition, conception, repřsentation); 2) occupation, contr̥le, administration); 3)̌ conomie); 4) populations, řseaux, religion. Ils permettent d'esquisser le portrait d'une řgion-cľ de l'⁹gypte de l'Antiquiť au Moyen ℗ge. Une fois pasše la phase de fixation territoriale de l'⁹tať gyptien, la faible densiť de population dans le Delta occidental et l'absence de menace řelle n'ont güre inciť̉ ďfinir et ďfendre une ̌vritable limite occidentale. L'arrǐve de nouveaux groupes de populations libyennes aux portes de l'⁹gyptẻ ľ'poque ramesside repřsente un tournant. Ľ'mergence de la dynastie s̐ate place la řgion dans une dynamique nouvelle, celle d'une frontïre avec le monde grec et d'un front pionnier, qui přfigure la mise en valeur de ces territoires sous les Ptoľ̌mes. ° ľ'poque im̌priale, l'⁹gypte est englǒbe dans un empire qui š'tend largement plus̉ l'ouest et dont le centre de ďcision est exťrieur, ce qui modifie le statut des marges ouest. Les incursions nomades dans la Grande Oasis̉ la fin de la ̌priode montrent cependant que la question de la frontïre demeure un enjeu. Cet enjeu perdure ap̈rs la conqůte arabe alors que l'⁹gypte est de nouveau inťgřẻ un immense empire.
Was there, in different periods of Egyptian history, a clearly defined political and cultural western border? How was the western limit of Egyptian territory perceived and experienced by the central power and local populations? Keeping these questions in mind, the proceedings of the international conference held in Cairo on 2-3 December 2017 explore the western margins of Egypt along four lines: 1) definition, conception, representation; 2) occupation, control, administration; 3) economy; 4) populations, networks, religion. They allow us to sketch a portrait of a key region of Egypt from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. Once the phase of territorial fixation of the Egyptian state was completed, the low population density in the Western Delta and the absence of a real threat did not encourage the definition and defense of an actual western border. However, the arrival of new Libyan groups at the gates of Egypt during the Ramesside period was a turning point. The emergence of the Saite Dynasty placed this region in a new dynamic--that of border with the Greek world and pioneer front--which prefigured the development of this territory under the Ptolemies. During the Roman period, Egypt was part of an empire that extended much further west and whose decision-making center was outside the country, which changed the status of the western limit. Still, the nomadic incursions into the Great Oasis at the end of the period show that the question of the frontier remained an issue. This issue continued after the Arab conquest when Egypt became again part of a vast empire.
