Having now benefited from viable editions and studies of many of the most important authors within the Neoplatonic tradition of western philosophy, it is time for us to read these materials more actively in terms of the philosophical developments of the late twentieth century that provide the greatest opportunities for intertextual exploration. The hermeneutical project that beckons was begun in Stephen Gersh's Neoplatonism after Derrida: Parallelograms (Brill, 2006) and is raised to a higher power in his present volume. A more nuanced view of the Fourth Gospel's media nature suggests a new and promising paradigm for assessing expansive and embedded uses of scripture in this work. The majority of studies exploring the Fourth Evangelist's use of scripture to date have approached the Fourth Gospel as the product of a highly gifted writer, who carefully interweaves various elements and figures from scripture into the canvas of his completed document. The present study attempts to calibrate a literary approach to the Fourth Gospel's use of scripture with an appreciation for oral poetic influences, whereby an orally-situated composer's use of traditional references and compositional strategy could be of one and the same piece. Most importantly, pre-formed story-patterns-thick with referential meaning-were used in the construction of new works. The present study makes the case that the Fourth Evangelist has patterned his story of Jesus after a retelling of the story of Adam andamp; Israel in two interrelated ways: first in the prologue, and then in the body of the Gospel as a whole.

History of Kannur and North Malabar : Kolatiri, Arakkal and Mysore Sultans /

The present work explores the historical origins and early development of Cananore and North Kerala region, till they were annexed by the British in 1792, when the said place became part of Madras Presidency under the British administration. It traces back its journey from the ancient Sangam age, independent Kingdom of Nannan to the rule of the Mushika dynasty during the medieval period, and it ends with the emergence of the Kolatiri dynasty that succeeded the Mushikas. This book places a particular emphasis on the Arakkal family, a branch that originated from the Kolatiris. The Arakkals controlled the large tracts of land including the Laccadive Islands. As Dutch expended its influence in Malabar, at the expense of the Portuguese, the Arakkals successfully asserted their independence in Malabar. The arrival of the Mysore Sultans helped the Arakkals to shake off the domination of the Kolatiris. However, the defeat of Tipu Sultan at the hands of the English East India Company in 1792, sealed the fate of the Arakkals, as well as the Kolatiris. The author has put to good use her knowledge of Malayalam, French, and English sources to reconstitute the history of Kannur and north Malabar until 1792.

Bose and his Movement : From Nazi Germany to French Indochina /

The work is based on original sources in the archives and libraries of France, England, India and Vietnam. It recounts the activities of Subhas Chandra Bose and his freedom movement in Germany and brings out certain hidden features of his life as found in the records, with adequate supporting evidence. The study also elaborates on Bose's activities in Southeast Asia, with a special focus on French Indochina. Incidentally it was from Saigon that he disappears from the face of the world. After rejecting the air crash theory in which Bose was supposed to have died as well as the Russian escape theory as untenable for want of factual evidence, the study concludes that Bose never left Saigon or Indochina after 17 August 1945, where he died in mysterious circumstances, before the arrival of the Cabinet Mission to India. The war treasures of Bose were confiscated by the Allied troops in Saigon during a search operation.

To Paul the traditions from and about Jesus had authority similar to that of the Scriptures: a logion or story served as text for paraphrastic expositions. Such expositions are also seen in John's Gospel. - It is insufficient to discuss 'John and the Synoptics'. A better scope is 'John within early gospel traditions'.- Paul and Philo maintain a cosmic understanding of Jesus and the Jewish people, respectively. Correspondingly, Jesus is seen in cosmological perspective in John's Prologue. Philo illuminates the role of God's logos relative to creation and revelation. - Archaeology testifies to the reliability of John's topographical references. Both John and Philo can combine theological and ideological elaborations with specific geographical references, historical events and religious feasts. The study has brought in material and perspectives which strengthen the view that the Gospel of John was independent of the other three written gospels.

The primary focus of this study is the question of the extent and impact of Old Testament traditions in Ephesians. A close examination of the range of quotations, allusions and echoes found in the epistle shows that the Old Testament influence was greater and more deliberate than has hitherto been assumed. The main part of the book is a thorough exegetical study of various aspects of the question, ranging from identification of the relevant Old Testament texts to an examination of the ways in which they are appropriated and applied in the New Testament context. A number of implications emerge for our understanding of the letter's intended readership, and these are illuminating for the assessment of the epistle's relationship to the letter to the Colossians.
