The Demotic and Hieratic Papyri in the Suzuki Collection of Tokai University /

: This volume publishes, for the first time, approximately fifty late Egyptian texts from the Suzuki collection held at Tokai University, Japan. The project is a result of a five-year collaboration between Tokai University, Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, The University of Michigan, and the Staatliche Museum zu Berlin. The texts were purchased by Professor Suzuki mainly in the early 1960s from various dealers in Cairo. The bulk of the collection, now housed in the Department of Asian Civilization, School of Letters at Tokai University as part of the Ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection (AENET), consists of early demotic texts. There is also one late hieratic text concerned with temple land, and a few small Greek fragments from the Byzantine period. The texts published here present an interesting range of document types, a range of demotic handwriting, and a few surprises. Among the more interesting are a rare word list and a new mythological narrative. : 139 pges : illustrations, 27plates ; 29 cm. : Includes bibliographical references (pages 131-135)and index. : 9781937040628

Catalogue of Egyptian funerary papyri in Danish collections /

: The present volume contains a publication of all known Egyptian funerary manuscripts in Danish collections. While the majority of texts are written on papyrus, the catalogue also includes several pieces of mummy linen. Only such material as is considered likely to have formed parts of actual burials are included; hence the volume does not include any of the Osirian ritual texts in the Papyrus Carlsberg Collection which all derive from a temple context. The purpose of the catalogue is to provide material for the study of Egyptian funerary texts. Thus, rather than focusing on the better-preserved and more impressive items, an exhaustive catalogue, representing a broader range of traditions is presented here. Five collections, all located in Copenhagen, are represented by the twenty-two manuscripts here published: the Papyrus Carlsberg Collection and the Papyrus Hauniensis Collection (University of Copenhagen), Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, the National Museum, and Thorsvaldsens Museum.

Newsletter, Number 69 (APRIL 1969)

: The officers and the Board of Directors of the American Research Center in Egypt once more have the sad duty of announcing to the members the death of one of the founders of the Center, its first President, Edward Waldo Forbes, who died on March 11, 1969, in his ninety-sixth year. Few men have had as long or as distinguished a career in the fine arts as had Mr. Forbes. He was, as is generally known, Director of the William Hayes Fogg Art Museum of Harvard University for thirty-five years. Under his leadership that museum became internationally known, not only for its collections but as a training school for young men and women who intended to devote their lives to research, teaching, and museum work. He and Professor Paul D. Sachs probably did more than any other two persons in the United States towards raising museum careers from an amateur to a professional basis.
