Since its inception, the study of Ḥadīth conducted by scholars trained in the Western academic tradition has been marked by sharp methodological debates. A focal issue is the origin and development of traditions on the advent of Islam. Scholars' verdicts on these traditions have ranged from "late fabrications without any historical value for the time concerning which the narrations purport to give information" to "early, accurately transmitted texts that allow one to reconstruct Islamic origins". Starting from previous contributions to the debate, the studies collected in this volume show that, by careful analysis of their texts and chains of transmission, the history of Muslim traditions can be reconstructed with a high degree of probability and their historicity assessed afresh.

ḥadīth are the documents recording the words and actions of the Prophet Muḥammad. Originally an enormous and amorphous corpus, Muslim scholars of the third/ninth century separated the ḥadīth they regarded as true from those they held to be forgeries, producing collection of ḥadīth which still command the respect of Muslims today. Ibn Abī ḥātim al-Rāzī (240/854-327/938) was one of the most prominent exponents and practitioners of ḥadīth criticism. He left a copious written legacy, including his famous Taqdima , a biographical dictionary of the early ḥadīth critics. The Taqdima reveals Ibn Abī ḥātims's vision of the critic and gives insight into the mechanism of ḥadīth criticism. It also provides a platform for the examination of the basic intellectual orientation of the ḥadīth critics and their conflicts with their opponents.

Bengal in the medieval period came to be ruled by the Muslim Sultans with the establishment of Bakhtiyar Khalji (r. 1203-1206). Apart from official and non-official literature and archaeological findings, numismatic studies too plays a very important role in understanding the socio-economic and political history of any region, nation, or confederation of states. In this book, we find that it is in Bengal the collection and publication of coins minted under the Muslim Sultans during the Delhi Sultanate and independent Sultanates, in the various museums and libraries. The book is divided into two major parts, one is the critical analysis of coins and the other is the study of coins issued by Muslim dynasts of Bengal. The first part covers the coins minted from the time of Sultan Iltutmish till Muhammad bin Tughluq. It also covers the coins issued by the Bengal governors under the rule of the Delhi Sultans. This section also covers the analysis of coins from Sultan Ghiyas-ud-Din Iwad Khalji (r. 1533-1538) of the Hussain Shahi Sultanate, who was defeated by Sher Shah Suri (r. 1537- 1545). The second part of this book covers the issues concerning the numismatic studies done with the help of tables and places made by the author. These include the following: a chronological survey of Bengal Sultan coins, the minting process, and popular Islamic titles issued, which include the famous Arabic-Persian titles, such as 'Khilafat' and 'Khilafat Allah', and the coins issued by princes and non-rulers. Interestingly, this part ends by covering the inscribed names of the Abbasid Caliphs and zamindars under the Muslim Sultans, such as Raja Ganesha and Raja Mahendra Deva.

Based on ethnographic fieldwork, this book investigates how and why Danish Muslim women engage as teachers and students in Islamic educational activities. It does so by focusing on the learning trajectories, knowledge disseminating activities, and class interactions of the women, showing that they involve themselves in a variety of activities to stay continuously engaged, and that this is a way of becoming pious. The book makes evident that this becoming is dependent on the embeddedness of the individual in a web of relations to both this- and otherworldly others. As such, the book promotes a relational understanding of piety formation and religious engagement that are informative to studies of religious life beyond Islam.

Traditionally considered as a useful source for the history of the ḥağğ , al-Ḏahab al-Masbūk is re-interpreted here as a complex literary construction that was endowed with different meanings.
