Documentary texts are vital to our understanding of many aspects of the ancient world, such as its administration, education, and economy. The value of these texts goes even further however: being autographs, they directly testify to ancient communication practices, a field of study which so far has remained underexplored. In this volume, specialists in the field engage with a broad range of documentary sources. They discuss not only how various modes of communication, such as language, handwriting, and lay-out, are employed in specific contexts of writing, but also how these different modes are interrelated. Building on insights from contemporary social-semiotic theory, the volume makes a case for the establishment of historical social semiotics as a discipline.

This volume investigates the transmission and ancient reception of ancient Greek texts with musical notation. It provides a reconstruction of the dynamics of reception orienting the re-use and re-shaping of musical and poetic tradition in the entertainment culture of the post-classical Greek world. The study makes full use of literary, papyrological and epigraphic evidence, and in particular includes a detailed philological analysis of surviving musical papyri and of their relationship to the editorial activity of Alexandrian scholarship. In Motivations for Refusal: Work, Value, and the Limits of Postworkerism , Mark Gawne develops a critical account of how the affective politics of capital and class are formed and contested in contemporary arrangements of work, and offers a comprehensive critique of the postworkerist school of autonomist Marxism. Drawing on value critique and class composition analysis, the book challenges core assumptions of postworkerism and related theories of affective labour, while retaining their core insights. Moving beyond the limits of postworkerism, Gawne analyses how the integration of the affective sciences into management and workplace technologies constitutes a terrain of contestation in conditions of immaterial production. Motivations for Refusal explores how affective politics emerge in the contestation between labour and capital in their affective modes.

This process is set within significant developments in the early formation of the study of religions, the rise of science and orientalism. All these elements are shown to be linked together.
