Critical notes on Plato's Politeia /
:
This volume is intended to accompany the new Oxford edition of Plato's Republic , published in 2003. It is based on a series of ten articles in Mnemosyne , dating from 1988 to 2003. It contains discussions of textual problems of various kinds. Much attention is paid to Plato's use of particles, to the moods and tenses of the verb, and to pragmatics and style. Moreover, the transmission of the text receives ample attention. The book is highly recommended for users of the new edition of the Republic , for those interested in the transmission of the Platonic corpus and in Platonic Greek and for students of linguistics in general.

Annaeana tragica : notes on the text of Seneca's tragedies /
:
This volume is a companion to the author's new Loeb edition of Seneca's tragedies (vol. 1, 2002; volume 2, 2004). It offers reasons for his editorial choices, and explains his interpretations of the text as reflected in his translation. Hercules Oetanus and Octavia , now generally regarded as imitations of Senecan drama, are both included. The volume is intended to be read alongside Otto Zwierlein's Kritische Kommentar , published in 1986. In the intervening years there has been much new work pertaining to Seneca's text, including full-scale editions with commentary on individual plays, such as Keulen's Troades , Töchterle's Oedipus and Ferri's Octavia . Annaeana Tragica seeks to supplement and advance Zwierlein's work in the light of this new material. An appendix reviews the scholarly controversy concerning the anapaestic odes of these plays, and offers fresh evidence relevant to the issue.

The inimitable Qurʾān : some problems in English translations of the Qurʾān with reference to rhetorical features /
:
In The Inimitable Qurʾān: Some Problems in English Translations of the Qurʾān with Reference to Rhetorical Features, Khalid Yahya Blankinship examines certain Arabic rhetorical features of the Qurʾān as represented in seven English translations. The author addresses the intersection of two important topics in Qurʾānic studies: the critique of the available English translations and the role of rhetoric in the interpretation of the Qurʾān. He identifies a number of figures characteristic of Qurʾanic style which represent some of the chief stumbling blocks for readers who are used to English in attempting to understand, interpret, and appreciate the text. The book should be useful to all those interested in rhetorical and translation studies and theory as well as Islamic studies.

Left unpublished at the time of his death during the Lebanese Civil War, it is published here for the first time in the original French with an English translation. The text is richly illustrated throughout and accompanied by a biographical essay by John Tchalenko and an introduction to the historiography of Qal'at Sem'an and Symeon Stylites by Emma Loosley Leeming.

Demotic Accounts: Some Notes on the Form and Content /
:
This essay aims at shedding some light on Demotic accounts as a vital administrative tool in the ancient Egyptian’s everyday life in the Late and Greco-Roman Periods as evidenced by the large number of published accounts. Account documents belong to Demotic documentary texts and they usually record lists of various amounts of specific items that have been paid or received by certain individuals in different transactions. Such documents began to be recorded in Demotic from the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty. Among the abundant vocabulary of accounts in Demotic, ip “account” and wn “list” seem to be the only two words which were used to refer to accounts as a type of text. A full-structured account, which is not the case in most of Demotic accounts, normally contains a maximum number of three elements, that is, the heading, the main body, and the closing formula.
La virtù delle donne (mulierum virtutes) /
:
Plutarch's Mulierum virtutes, aims to demonstrate the unity and identity of male and female virtue, by providing examples of 'virtuous' women and groups of women from the past. This volume is a critical edition of Mulierum virtutes, accompanied by an introduction, an Italian translation and commentary. In addition, some introductory chapters provide an overview of the work's literary models, textual transmission, reception, style and gender thematics throughout Plutarch's Moralia . The volume represents an important contribution to the philological, literary, historical and philosophical analysis of Plutarch's Mulierum virtutes and its textual transmission and reception throughout the centuries.

Rhetorical Criticism of the Bible : A Comprehensive Bibliography with Notes on History and Method /
:
This volume is designed as a resource for using rhetorical criticism as a methodology for interpreting the Bible. Rhetorical criticism is treated in the broader context of the growing interest in the study of the literary character of the Bible. The volume is divided into two parts to accommodate both the Old and New Testaments. Each part begins with a discussion of the history and methodology of rhetorical criticism pertinent to that Testament. Here special emphasis is given to the current state and trends of the discipline and its impact on biblical interpretation. These discussions are followed by extensive bibliographies categorized to facilitate working with the published research on specific biblical texts, books, or categories of books.
