In The Inimitable Qurʾān: Some Problems in English Translations of the Qurʾān with Reference to Rhetorical Features, Khalid Yahya Blankinship examines certain Arabic rhetorical features of the Qurʾān as represented in seven English translations. The author addresses the intersection of two important topics in Qurʾānic studies: the critique of the available English translations and the role of rhetoric in the interpretation of the Qurʾān. He identifies a number of figures characteristic of Qurʾanic style which represent some of the chief stumbling blocks for readers who are used to English in attempting to understand, interpret, and appreciate the text. The book should be useful to all those interested in rhetorical and translation studies and theory as well as Islamic studies.

Souvent absente du débat sociétal à propos des animaux, la perspective historique chrétienne proposée dans ce volume se veut une contribution originale à la réflexion actuelle sur le statut juridique et éthique des animaux. La restauration de la création aims to examine the status of animals in ancient and medieval Christian thought following an eschatological perspective, that is, focusing on the question of the salvation of animals according to the divine plan. The volume is articulated in three parts: Biblical sources, in particular the promise of the renewal of creation according to Rm 8, 21; Patristic and medieval doctrinal elaborations on the question; finally, contemporary considerations regarding the status of animals in our societies. Often absent from the current social debate on the subject, the historical Christian perspective which this volume proposes is intended as an original contribution to today's ongoing reflexion on the legal and ethical status of animals.

W.W. Hunter's Bengal Ms Records 1782-1807 in four volumes, is based on the Collectorate records and the records of the Board of Revenue which were widely scattered. Hunter made an extensive survey of these records which are now available in a complete form in the record room of the Directorate of State Archives, West Bengal. The records relate to the judicial, civil, military and land revenue administration of the East India Company. The introductory note of Hunter as found in the Bengal Ms Records and the bulk of letters, throw light on the revenue work that progressed territorially with the expansion of the Presidency. The importance of the Board of Revenue records was given considerable significance as these records were the raw data for reconstructing these volumes. Hunter's omnibus compilation had thrown light on various districts of Bengal Presidency, viz.,Midnapore, Bissenpore (Bishnupur), Cuttuck, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Chittagong, Purneah, Bhagalpur, Shahabad and Benares and dealt with such matters as rent suits, waste lands, lakhiraj lands, Government estates and their settlements, customs, excise, salt, opium, indigo, police, post office, and public works including sanitation, embankments, stamps and survey. The consolidated index prepared by Hunter shows the exhaustive nature of his research and would prove to be a lodestone for scholars of colonialism in South Asia.

Gustavo Costa reviewing the Italian edition of Vico's Institutiones Oratoriae in New Vico Studies 9 (1991), has written that Rhetoric is the mainspring of an important trend of Vichian studies which initiated at the beginning of the twentieth century and had its manifestation in John D. Schaeffer's Sensus Communis: Vico, Rhetoric, and the Limits of Relativism (Durham: Duke University Press, 1990), where Schaeffer aptly noted, summing up a long exegetic tradition, Vico was imbued with rhetoric and convinced of its centrality to Western civilization. Unfortunately, the editions of Vico's works published in English have not yet included the Institutiones Oratoriae , which more or less reflects the lectures on rhetoric given by Vico at the University of Naples, starting with the academic year 1699-1700 and going through 1739-1741. The manual on rhetoric was used in Italy up to the end of the nineteenth century and established the common curriculum in rhetoric to be followed in all Universities. This English edition offers a text of the Institutiones complete on the base of the four known extant manuscripts. It offers the marginal glosses made by Vico's students, a collection of Vico's phrases and explanations of terms collected by some of the students, a glossary of Latin words and rhetorical terms from the Latin text, and a wealth of information in the commentary. The Art of Rhetoric is the manual for everyone who wants to know what rhetoric is, how it was employed in the forum or the courts, how it could be learned from the classic orators, and how it can be used whenever we speak for convincing, praising or motivating.
