This volume explores the ways in which religion became the object of scientific research in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Most obvious is the development of an increasingly autonomous science of religion (with founding fathers like Max Müller and C.P. Tiele). However, within anthropology (Tylor, Frazer), sociology (Durkheim, Max Weber), and psychology (William James), religion also came to be seen as a separate entity to be studied comparatively. To capture this wide field this book focuses on the emergence of the discourse on religion in a broad academic context, among different disciplines. The emphasis is on general socio-historical developments, rather than on individual biographies. Part I deals with the institutionalization of science of religion in France, Britain, and the Netherlands. Part II focuses on boundary disputes between the emerging \'sciences of religion\'. Part III examines new conceptualizations of religion underlying the new endeavour (\'ritual\', \'magic\', \'survival\').

By studying the making of Umayyad heroes or Abbasid origins-myths, this book aims to reveal the successive meanings granted to Syrian history, and to identify the various layers of historical writing and rewriting during the first centuries of Islam. How different was the practice of magic in the Latin West from that of the eastern Mediterranean basin? Was it just derivative from Greek practice, or did it have its own originality? Carefully selected examples from texts and dialects of the whole Phoenician-Punic period bring to life the grammatical description of this language. Included are fully vocalized Punic and Neo-Punic inscriptions of Roman Tripolitiana in Latin orthography as well as the literary fragments of Punic drama as found in Plautus' comedy Poenulus. This classical descriptive grammar of the Phoenician-Punic language (1200 BCE - 350 CE) presents the reader with a full picture: its phonology, orthography, morphology, syntax and usage. Its history and its various dialects are dealt with in an introduction. Hebraists and Semitists will find the description of the verbal system of particular interest to them, especially that of the literary language, which holds that tense and aspect reference of a given form of the verb is largely a function of syntax, not morphology. Sanctifying Texts, Transforming Rituals: Encounters in Liturgical Studies explores the dynamics of Christian ritual practices in their relation to a broader cultural framework. The nineteen essays, written in honour of the liturgist Gerard A.M. Rouwhorst (Tilburg University), study liturgical developments in times of transition, in which religious and cultural changes set the development of worship practices in motion. The chapters in the first part (Texts) concentrate on the close connection between narrative texts and liturgical practice. Through intensive surveys of three fortifications in late Roman Greece, Frey reveals the untapped potential of spolia in demonstrating the critical role played by non-elites in bringing about the architectural and social changes that mark the end of classical antiquity. As his analysis demonstrates, when studied less as displaced objects to be classified by type and more as evidence for the construction process itself, spolia offer a unique opportunity to examine the ways in which common builders met the challenge of using pre-existing building materials to meet their contemporary architectural needs. This "bottom-up" approach offers an alternative to the traditional view that attributes change and innovation only to the genius of prominent individuals known to us in historical sources.

"A new stele dated Year III of Aspelta was discovered one fragment after another between 1999 and 2007 on the site of Dukki Gel (Pnubs), one kilometre north of Kerma. What started as archaeological research turned into a police investigation when the largest fragment was confiscated from a Sudanese man who had sent a copy of the text to the Museum of Khartoum to enquire about the potential commercial value of the object in his possession. Five fragments constituting the main part of the upper and median sections of the stele could thus be reassembled, along with two fragments of the lower rim. The scarce number of Napatean inscribed monuments known to us makes every new discover likely to shed entirely new light on this very specific period when the Kushite kings ceased to rule over Egypt but kept close cultural relationships with it beyond the now interrupted political links. The date of the stele - Year III, 1st month of Winter, the 12th - places it twenty days after the stele from Sanam, downstream of the 4th cataract, now in the Louvre Museum (C 250 = E 6209) which is dated Year III, 3rd month of the akhet season, the 22nd day. The latter commemorated the visit to the temple of Amun-Ra Bull of Nubia by a delegation sent by the king to replace the sistrum player of the temple. Reading the inscription of stele from Dukki Gel shows that most members of the delegation of the Sanam stele are still mentioned here, although important redactional discrepancies are to found between the two texts. A comparison of the two inscriptions lets us establish certain orthographic rules followed by the scribe of each stele, one with an Egyptian training while the other one seems to have been influenced by a specific local culture, which the Dukki Gel stele contributes to reveal." -- Page 4 of cover.
