Sharaf al-Dīn al-Masʿūdī's al-Mabāḥith wa-l-Shukūk ʿalā l-Ishārāt ( Investigations and Objections on the Pointers ) offers major insight into the dialectic between the two traditions of Avicennan philosophy and rational theology, particularly Ashʿarism, which by the end of the century culminates in the systematic philosophical theology of Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī. Inaugurating the long and distinguished commentarial tradition on Avicenna's Ishārāt ( Pointers ), al-Masʿūdī's Shukūk uniquely consists of aporias on selected passages, as opposed to exegesis. Women's Struggle : A History of the All India Women's Conference 1927-2016 (Third Edition) /

The All India Women's Conference completed ninety years in 2017. The first edition of this book was brought out in 1990 when it had completed sixty years. The volume was widely appreciated as little work had been done on the history of women's organizations and their contribution to women's development. A second edition was published when AIWC celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in 2002-3. These editions were cited in numerous books and articles in journals of women's history in India and abroad. This third edition carries the story of AIWC forward for little over a decade from 2002-3 onwards. Founded in 1927 in Poona, AIWC's main goal initially was promoting women's education. But it soon took up issues of social legislation and social reform. There has been continuity and change in the activities and programmes of AIWC. In the last decade, it has taken up new programmes such as adoption of villages and empowerment of rural women, formation of self help groups, encouraging skill training and vocational courses, starting a legal cell, initiating projects in rural sanitation, clean water, and waste management, herbal gardens, disaster management, etc. It has conducted courses in retail marketing. Its library now has a research centre, an excellent archival collection and holds book discussions. In 2010, AIWC set up three trusts for literacy, health and old age and elderly care for the underprivileged and economically weaker sections. AIWC is also actively involved in the issue of climate change. Old programmes have continued and expanded. The working women's hostel at 6 Bhagwan Dass Road continues as does the Bapnu Ghar which provides shelter and counselling to women in distress. Activities in health and family welfare and nonconventional energy also continue. We hope that this edition, like the earlier ones, will be of interest to scholars of history as well as to students of women's studies.

In pursuing this objective, the author follows parallel paths: Chapter 1 provides the most updated reconstruction of Simnānī's (d. 736/1336) biography, which, thanks to its unique features, emerges as a cross-section of Iranian society and as a microhistory of the complex relationships between a Sufi master, Persian elites and Mongol rulers during the Ilkhanid period; Chapter 2 contains a study on the phenomenon of Arabic-Persian diglossia in Simnānī's written work, arguing for its socio-religious function; in Chapters 3 to 6 the critical editions of two important, interrelated treatises by Simnānī are presented; finally, Chapter 7 offers the first full-length annotated translation of a long work by Simnānī ever to appear in a Western language.

Eugene B. Borowitz is Sigmund L. Falk Distinguished Professor of Education and Jewish Religious Thought at Hebrew Union College in New York. A rabbi, teacher of rabbis, and a theologian, Borowitz has been an important spokesperson for non-Orthodox forms of Judaism, Reform Judaism in particular. Building on this new interest, the ten papers published here concentrate on Neoplatonic philosophy of nature from Plotinus to Simplicius, and on its main conceptual features and its relation to the previous philosophical and scientific traditions. The papers were presented at a conference sponsored by the European Science Foundation in Castelvecchio Pascoli in June 2006. The so-called Genesis Apocryphon (1Q20) from Qumran Cave 1 has suffered from decades of neglect, due in large part to its poor state of preservation. As part of a resurgent scholarly interest in the Apocryphon, and its prominent position among the Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls, this volume presents a fresh transcription, translation, and exstenive textual notes drawing on close study of the original manuscript, all available photographs, and previous publications. In addition, a detailed analysis of columns 13-15 and their relation to the oft-cited parallel in the Book of Jubilees reveals a number of ways in which the two works differ, thereby highlighting several distinctive features of the Genesis Apocryphon. The result is a reliable text edition and a fuller understanding of the message conveyed by this fragmentary but fascinating retelling of Genesis.

The Theatre of Justice contains 17 chapters that offer a holistic view of performance in Greek and Roman oratorical and political contexts. This holistic view consists of the examination of two areas of techniques. The first one relates to the delivery of speeches and texts: gesticulation, facial expressions and vocal communication. The second area includes a wide diversity of techniques that aim at forging a rapport between the speaker and the audience, such as emotions, language and style, vivid imagery and the depiction of characters. In this way the volume develops a better understanding of the objectives of public speaking, the mechanisms of persuasion, and the extent to which performance determined the outcome of judicial and political contests.
