Throughout its long history, stretching from the 25th Dynasty (c. 752-656 BC) to the Ottoman Period (c. 1500-1811 AD), Qasr Ibrim was one of the most important settlements in Egyptian Nubia. The site has produced an unprecedented wealth of material and due to the - even for Egypt - extraordinary preservation circumstances, includes objects that are made of perishable organic materials, such as wood, leather, and flax. In Egypt, our sources are particularly rich, owing to the land's arid climate and the unparalleled survival not only of stone, ceramic and metalwork, but also of organic material such as textiles, wood and manuscripts found on papyrus, parchment and paper. This volume brings together over a dozen of the world's leading specialists to explore the dialectical interplay between empire and religious identity through a series of case studies from Egypt. Evidence from Egypt suggests that it was precisely in the context of empire that 'religious identity' emerged as a distinctive marker. Seafaring expeditions to Punt in the Middle Kingdom : excavations at Mersa/Wadi Gawasis, Egypt /

In the 12th Dynasty (ca. 1985-1773 BC) the Egyptian state sent a number of seafaring expeditions to the land of Punt, located somewhere in the southern Red Sea region, in order to bypass control of the upper Nile by the Kerma kingdom. Excavations at Mersa/Wadi Gawasis on the Red Sea coast of Egypt from 2001 to 2011 have uncovered evidence of the ancient harbor ( Saww ) used for these expeditions, including parts of ancient ships, expedition equipment and food - all transported circa 150 km across the desert from Qift in Upper Egypt to the harbor. This book summarizes the results of these excavations for the organization of these logistically complex expeditions, and evidence at the harbor for the location of Punt.

Ṭuruq and ṭuruq-linked institutions by Frederick De Jong was first published in 1978. It is largely based on research in public and private archives in Cairo, and on published materials in limited circulation. This study became highly influential in its field. De Jong describes the development of the administration and organization of the ṭuruq and ṭuruq -linked institutions ( takāyā , zawāyā , and shrines) under the shaykhs of the Bakrī family in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Egypt. Central to this administration is the principle of right of qadam , meaning the exclusive right of a ṭarīqa to proselytize and to appear in public in a particular area, if it could be proved that it had been the first to do so.

Proliferation and Bifurcation of the Sufi Orders in Twentieth-Century Egypt /

This study covers a period of some seventy-five years, from the abolition of right of qadam (priority) in 1905 until the adoption of the Law Concerning the Regulations for the Sufi Orders of 1976 by the Egyptian Parliament. During this period, regulations for the Sufi orders were contested and remained in limbo when amendments proposed by the shaykhs of the orders continued to be rejected by the mufti of Egypt. The abolition of right of qadam generated a proliferation of Sufi orders. A core realm of sufi orders recognized by the authorities was known as "official Sufi orders". A larger group of Sufi orders emerged which did not have official recognition and was referred to as "free Sufi orders". The history of the Sufi orders in both categories in the post- qadam era is at the centre of the present study.

"This book represents the first systematic investigation on ancient cardiology, which includes the first civilizations of human history, such as those flourished in Mesopotamia, Pharaonic Egypt, Vedic India, and China. It includes also major pre-Hispanic civilizations at their apex, namely the Maya, Aztec and Inca, given that they shared fundamental features with the first ones. Finally, it closes with Greek medicine because it represents crucial advancements which paved the way to modern cardiology. Nothing similar have been previously attempted, and we believe that just this feature represents an important value of this work. The cardiovascular system was not well understood anywhere in antiquity. The heart and vessels were viewed as system of conduits containing all kind of physiological and pathological fluids, such as blood, sperm, sweat, urine, and feces. Arteries and veins were not distinguished from either an anatomical or a physiological point of view. Circulation was far from being understood. After millennia of ignorance, William Harvey, in 1628, demonstrated that the heart was a pump and its function was to push blood in the systemic circulation. This is rightly considered the dawn of modern cardiovascular medicine. Consequently, all ideas, theories and practices of ancient medicine were reduced to unimportant superstitions. Historians of medicine, adapting to that 'dogma', relegated pre-Harveian cardiology to roughs notes, preventing a proper historical evaluation of many centuries of cardiovascular conceptions and practices. All the ancient civilizations investigated in that book shared the conviction that the heart was the biological and spiritual center of the body, as the seat of emotions, mind, will, vital energy and the soul. That the heart maintained a special role both in religion and in medicine across millennia, surviving from cultural and scientific revolutions, deserves to be investigated and, possibly, explained. During the last decades, new advancements in cardiovascular and neurological physiology and pathology, shed new light on ancient ideas. Researchers are focusing on the so-called brain-heart axis, which demonstrate how these organs are strictly interconnected. Moreover, the role of the heart in emotions is becoming even more important. Indeed, ancient conceptions about the heart are founding a new validation in the physiological and neurological ground. Therefore, a first attempt of rediscovering the earliest theories and practices of cardiovascular medicine couldn't wait any longer. Finally, the celebration for the eight centuries of the University of Padua (1222-2022), represented the best occasion to undertake such an ambitious project. This volume represents the 6th installment of proceedings of the successful international conference series "Origin of the State. Predynastic and Early Dynastic Egypt", which this time was held at the University of Vienna in Austria from 10th to 15th of September 2017. With this new peer-reviewed volume of focused research on early Egypt, the 41 contributors dedicated their research to various questions surrounding prehistoric Egypt, the emergence of Pharaonic civilization and the territorial state. While some papers present new archaeological results from on-going excavations, others involve the analysis and interpretation of previously known evidence from the different regions along the Nile Valley. A large group of papers specifically discuss the area of ancient Memphis, which was also a central theme of the conference helping to summarize 20 years of research at the archaeological site of Helwan. Following the good tradition of previous Origins conferences, a very large number of papers are dedicated to the area of Lower Egypt and the Nile Delta from early prehistoric through to the early Old Kingdom periods. These papers highlight the significance and enormous progress of archaeological fieldwork in an area that was long considered an uninhabitable swampland in prehistoric times. Other papers report on new fieldwork at different sites in a largely unexplored region of the Egyptian Nile Valley - the Eastern Desert of Middle Egypt, where active mining on a very large scale has taken place raising questions about the organization and scale of such activities during the formative periods of Egyptian civilization. There are numerous contributions on archaeological evidence from sites in Upper Egypt and their material culture, many of which having been excavated long ago but offering the opportunity to raise new questions.
