This book examines early modern Jerusalem's waqf system through an Ottoman provincial lens, analyzing how diverse social groups engaged with these endowments in judicial contexts. Conceptualizing waqf s-central to the city's socioeconomic fabric and urban identity-as an interconnected " waqf network", the research demonstrates the commodification of waqf offices among elites, and their enduring control over pious foundations. These processes reveal how provincial power structures mediated between imperial standards and local interests. Focusing on notable families who monopolized waqf -related privileges, the work reconstructs Jerusalemite society through multiple frameworks: imperial waqf policies, social hierarchies, notable-commoner relations, and intercommunal dynamics-positioning endowments as both economic assets and instruments of governance. Proliferation and Bifurcation of the Sufi Orders in Twentieth-Century Egypt /

This study covers a period of some seventy-five years, from the abolition of right of qadam (priority) in 1905 until the adoption of the Law Concerning the Regulations for the Sufi Orders of 1976 by the Egyptian Parliament. During this period, regulations for the Sufi orders were contested and remained in limbo when amendments proposed by the shaykhs of the orders continued to be rejected by the mufti of Egypt. The abolition of right of qadam generated a proliferation of Sufi orders. A core realm of sufi orders recognized by the authorities was known as "official Sufi orders". A larger group of Sufi orders emerged which did not have official recognition and was referred to as "free Sufi orders". The history of the Sufi orders in both categories in the post- qadam era is at the centre of the present study.

Seafaring expeditions to Punt in the Middle Kingdom : excavations at Mersa/Wadi Gawasis, Egypt /

In the 12th Dynasty (ca. 1985-1773 BC) the Egyptian state sent a number of seafaring expeditions to the land of Punt, located somewhere in the southern Red Sea region, in order to bypass control of the upper Nile by the Kerma kingdom. Excavations at Mersa/Wadi Gawasis on the Red Sea coast of Egypt from 2001 to 2011 have uncovered evidence of the ancient harbor ( Saww ) used for these expeditions, including parts of ancient ships, expedition equipment and food - all transported circa 150 km across the desert from Qift in Upper Egypt to the harbor. This book summarizes the results of these excavations for the organization of these logistically complex expeditions, and evidence at the harbor for the location of Punt.
