The Buwayhid Dynasty in Iraq 334H./945 to 403H./1012 : Shaping Institutions for the Future /

: A study of the development of political and social institutions in Baghdad, center of the Abbasid Caliphate, in that neglected period between Abbasid collapse and the coming of the Seljuk Turks. Three brothers, Daylemite mercenaries from the southern Caspian succeeded in establishing a dynasty that lasted nearly a century, controlling Iraq, a good part of Iran and the Gulf. The period has been labled the "Iranian intermezzo" but careful examination shows that the dynasty shaped the basic institutions to which the Seljuks would fall heir: the chief amirate, the system of army fiefs and the bureaucracy. It was a period of profound change and dislocation which fostered an open and creative cultural atmosphere. The Caliphate, bereft of power, was re-established as the center of authority and legitimation.

The System of Classical Malay Literature /

: Scholarly works considering traditional Malay letters from a literary point of view are scarce. In this book, classical Malay literature of the 16th through the 19th centuries is viewed in the context of more than a millennium of medieval Malay letters. In the first part, based on a reconstruction of the literary self-awareness of the Malays, a model is offered of classical Malay literature as an integral, hierarchically arranged a 'anthropomorphic' system, the impetus for its formation being the Islamization of the Malay world. A study of the origin and evolution of all genres of Malay literature, as well as an analysis of some exemplary works with special reference to their poetics, provide the factual basis for the suggested model. The second part of the book treats of the aesthetics of classical Malay literature, first and foremost the central notion of the sphere of beauty, 'the beautiful' (indah). Its divine origin, internal properties-such as the diversity of manifestations, perfection, orderliness-capable of arousing love and thus producing a harmonizing effect on the human psyche, are considered, as well as the synthesis of Hindu-Javanese and Muslim components in Malay literature aesthetics. This is the first study that aims to present a coherent view of the entire body of classical Malay literature. In a novel and stimulating approach, the organizing principles of Malay literature are seen as a system in which the various genres are allotted their proper place.

Muslim Empowerment in Ghana : Analysing the Spectrum of Muslim Social Mobilization during the Internet Age /

: This book is the first ‘groundwork' on Muslim NGOs in contemporary Ghana. It builds upon a database of more than 600 Muslim non-profit associations, foundations and grass-roots organisations whose activities are traced through extensive use of social media. The first part of the book scrutinises the varieties of their activities and operational spaces, their campaigns and target groups, alongside their local, regional, national and international connections. The second part analyses contemporary debates on infaq, sadaqa, waqf and zakat as well as Islamic banking and micro-finance schemes for promoting social welfare among Muslim communities in Ghana.

A Potter’s Wheelhead from Askut and the Organization of the Egyptian Ceramic Industry in Nubia /

: For the most part, the ceramic assemblage at Askut and the other Nubian fortresses tracks well with pottery from Egypt, and it is clear from the ubiquitous presence of pottery made from marl clays that ceramic vessels were regularly imported from Egyptian workshops in both Upper and Lower Egypt. Large-scale pottery production of Nile Silt vessels, however, is attested during the Middle Kingdom in the Nubian colony at both Mirgissa and Serra East. Wasters and unfired fragments of Nile Silt vessels from Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom contexts in the Southeast Sector at Askut demonstrate that smaller-scale production also existed in the colony. Additionally, a ceramic potter’s wheelhead, the actual flywheel/throwing surface as opposed to the wheel’s stone pivots, was recently identified from the late Middle Kingdom (Thirteenth Dynasty) deposits, the only one attested from Pharaonic Nubia and only the second from a Pharaonic Egyptian context. This evidence points towards a complex system of production and distribution that included industrial workshops at major sites complemented by localized production on a much smaller scale to meet local demand. Ceramic production on the scale seen at Askut would serve modest community needs for the fortress and perhaps the surrounding area in a multi-scalar system of ceramic production.

The Dead Sea Scrolls in the Context of Hellenistic Judea : Proceedings of the Tenth Meeting of the International Organization for Qumran Studies (Aberdeen, 5-8 August, 2019) /

: This volume situates the Qumran Dead Sea Scrolls within Hellenistic Judea. By so doing, this volume shows how the Dead Sea Scrolls participate in broad, cross-cultural intellectual discourses that surpass the Jewish group that produced and collected these scrolls.
Approaching the Qumran scrolls as an intrinsic part of Hellenistic and Roman antiquity, this volume shows how the authors and collectors of the Scrolls shared the interests of other inhabitants of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East and engaged in the same debates and dialogues as others in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Thus, this volume offers an invitation to both Scrolls scholars and academics working on other disciplines to create opportunities for interdisciplinary research and exchange.

Mobile pastoralism and the formation of Near Eastern civilizations : weaving together society /

: "In this book, Anne Porter explores the idea that mobile and sedentary members of the ancient world were integral parts of the same social and political groups in greater Mesopotamia during the period 4000 to 1500 BCE. She draws on a wide range of archaeological and cuneiform sources to show how networks of social structure, political and religious ideology, and everyday as well as ritual practice, worked to maintain the integrity of those groups when the pursuit of different subsistence activities dispersed them over space. These networks were dynamic, shaping many of the key events and innovations of the time, including the Uruk expansion and the introduction of writing, so-called secondary state formation and the organization and operation of government, the literary production of the Third Dynasty of Ur and the first stories of Gilgamesh, and the emergence of the Amorrites in the second millennium BCE" --

The Taifa Kingdoms : Reconsidering 11th-Century Iberia /

: The 11th century has traditionally been regarded as a turning point in the evolution of medieval Iberia. The dismantling of the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba gave way to a process of political and territorial fragmentation that contributed to weakening Islamic power vis-a-vis the incipient Northern Christian kingdoms and ultimately leading up to the establishment of the Almoravid dynasty. The Taifa Kingdoms: Reconsidering 11th-century Iberia gathers contributions from a diverse group of Medieval Historians, Arabists, Art Historians and Archaeologist seeking to explore new approaches to understand one of the most complex and fascinating moments in al-Andalus. From political history, to socio-economic organization, and artistic and scientific activities, the book covers a wide range of topics and issues from fresh perspectives. Contributors Javier Albarrán, Xavier Ballestín, Amira K. Bennison, Pascal Buresi, Elsa Cardoso, Carlos de Ayala, Carolina Domenech Belda, Maribel Fierro, Miquel Forcada, Alejandro García-Sanjuán, Teresa Garulo, Adday Hernández López, Carlos Laliena, Eneko López Martínez de Marigorta, María Marcos Cobaleda, María Antonia Martínez Núñez, Aurélien Montel, Julián Ortega, Alejandro Peláez Martín, Víctor Rabasco, Julio Samsó, Bilal Sarr, Philippe Sénac, and Bruna Soravia.

International Law and Business : Comparative Methods and Global Case Studies /

: This book introduces law in the context of international business. The basics of law are explored using a clear comparative methodology. International and regional economic institutions are discussed, next to the fundaments of private law. These include contract law, liability law, labour law, company law, privacy law, intellectual property law and international private law. The book goes beyond the usual focus on Western legal systems and uses examples from all over the world to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of business law. It is set up rather broadly, so that it can be used by teachers throughout their entire curriculum. Each chapter ends with a clear summary. With its colourful cases, this book is accessible and fun to read.

Sovereign Wealth Funds and State Immunity /

: How does the hybrid nature of SWFs affect the application of state immunity to these funds? May an SWF be sued in foreign courts for wrongful acts committed in the course of its investment activities? Can SWF investments be attached by a private creditor seeking to enforce an investment arbitration award against the fund's state of nationality? This monograph addresses these questions from the perspective of the 2004 New York Convention and six selected jurisdictions (US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, China), with the broader aim of highlighting potential new standards for implementation of the state immunity rule to SWFs.

Urban Regimes of Dispossession in the Global South : A New Debate /

: This edited volume develops a theoretical framework-what we call urban regimes of dispossession -for understanding how urban actors organize dispossession and govern the urban dispossessed, how the urban dispossessed arrange, experience and resist dispossession, and how urban dispossession contributes to creating/expanding capitalist systems or transforming urban societies in the global south. The book's main arguments are built on a survey of the nearly two-hundred-year history of global dispossession studies and solid empirical evidence from three continents-Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and seven countries- Bangladesh, Brazil, Honduras, India, Lebanon, Nigeria, and Uganda. Eighteen scholars bring diverse perspectives and realities on urban dispossession, which will appeal to students, scholars, planners, and practitioners across various social scientific disciplines, including sociology, anthropology, urban studies, political economy, international relations, political science, economics, gender studies, and geography. Contributors are: Shapan Adnan, Orlando Alves dos Santos Junior, Fred Bidandi, David L. Brunsma, Tarcyla Fidalgo Ribeiro, Lakshmi Jahnavi, Marie Kolling, Ana Maria Kumarasamy, Barbara Lipietz, Lipon Mondal, Adrian Murray, John Nagle, Victor Udemezue Onyebueke, Taísa Sanches, Karen Spring, Susan Spronk, Luanda Vannuchi and Julian Walker.

Preferential Rules of Origin in the Law of the WTO and PTAs : The Challenge of 3D Printing /

: Where does a 3D printed good come from? This book examines preferential rules of origin within the context of advanced manufacturing, focusing on 3D printing. From a foundation in the legal and technical aspects of rules of origin, it explores why 3D printing implies reconsidering how materials, labour, and technology factor into the determination of the origin of a good and the risks and opportunities this brings to producers and traders. The book suggests revisiting rules of origin in PTAs and encourages the WTO to promote incorporating rules or origin and new production methods into a balanced trade framework that supports producers, traders, and consumers globally.

The Spatial Factor in African History : The Relationship of the Social, Material, and Perceptual /

: The authors of this inter-disciplinary collection examine the role of space in six areas of West, Central and East Africa during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. They demonstrate the active quality of space and analyze the ways in which people have contested and shaped space, including responses to crises. In addition, a lengthy essay re-interprets tropical African history, 1800-1930, using spatial theory. Contributors look at how people have constructed mental maps, used discourse to organize territories, and perceived social landscapes. The studies employ a tri-level approach, one that moves from specific places to regions to macro-regional or transnational systems and back again. Authors draw upon written and oral sources to reconstruct the past and employ innovative mapping techniques to illustrate spatial dynamics.

Women, Gender and Language in Morocco /

: This volume deals with the complex but poorly understood relationship between women, gender, and language in Morocco, a Muslim, multilingual, multicultural, and developing country. The hypothesis on which the book is based is that an understanding of gender perception and women's agency can be achieved only by taking into account the structure of power in a specific culture and that language is an important component of this power. In Moroccan culture, history, geography, Islam, orality, multilingualism, social organization, economic status, and political system constitute the superstructures of power within which factors such as social differences, contextual differences, and identity differences interact in the daily linguistic performances of gender. Moroccan women are far from constituting a homogeneous group, consequently the choices available to them vary in nature and empowering capacity, thus 'widening' the spectrum of gender beyond cultural limits.

Creation language in Romans 8 : a study in Monosemy /

: Modern scholarship tends to understand Paul's use of creation language (κτίσις) in Rom 8.18-23 as part of a commentary on the state of sub-human creation. This misguided position warrants an inquiry into the state of lexical study in New Testament scholarship. As a result, Fewster articulates a theory of lexical monosemy, cast in the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The model is applied to Paul's use of κτίσις through a robust corpus analysis and investigation into the word's role within the paragraph. κτίσις contributes to the cohesive structure of Rom 8.18-23 and-contra the majority of interpreters-functions as a metaphor for the human body.

Holism in Ancient Medicine and its Reception /

: This volume aims at exploring the ancient roots of 'holistic' approaches in the specific field of medicine and the life sciences, without, however, overlooking the larger theoretical implications of these discussions. Therefore, the project plans to broaden the perspective to include larger cultural discussions and, in a comparative spirit, reach out to some examples from non Graeco-Roman medical cultures. As such, it constitutes a fundamental contribution to history of medicine, philosophy of medicine, cultural studies, and ancient studies more broadly. The wide-ranging selection of chapters offers a comprehensive view of an exciting new field: the interrogation of ancient sources in the light of modern concepts in philosophy of medicine, as justification of the claim for their enduring relevance as object of study and, at the same time, as means to a more adequate contextualisation of modern debates within a long historical process.

Reimagining Legal Pluralism in Africa : Balancing Indigenous, State, and Religious Laws /

: This collection challenges the prevailing conflict of laws approach to the interaction of state and indigenous legal systems. It introduces adaptive legal pluralism as an alternative framework that emphasises dialogue and engagement between these legal systems. By exploring a dialogic approach to legal pluralism, the authors shed light on how it can effectively address the challenges stemming from the colonial imposition of industrial legal systems on Africa's agrarian political economies.

Life histories of Theban tombs : transdiciplinary investigations of a cluster of rock-cut tombs at Sheikh 'Abd el-Qurna /

: "In recent years, archeological research has undergone major changes. The material turn in archaeology and related disciplines prompted the adoption of sophisticated scientific, digital, and technical approaches and methods often conducted on a micro level, enhancing our understanding of depositional processes and of the creation and life of an archeological object. This volume reflects seven seasons of transdisciplinary archaeological research at a cluster of rock-cut tombs in Sheikh Abd al-Qurna, an ancient Egyptian hillside cemetery and part of the much larger Theban Necropolis. Organized in twelve main chapters, Life Histories of Theban Tombs presents current investigations in landscape archaeology (including recent excavations at a large debris hill previously covering a tomb), geo- and bioarcheology, the archaeology of tomb construction, burial practices, and domestic uses as well as various epigraphical, visual, and material studies[should there be a serial. The last two sections provide additional insight into the applied recording, surveying, and visualization methods and techniques and the database system used for data recording and organization. "
