La Summa Alexandrinorum : Abrégé arabo-latin de l'Éthique à Nicomaque d'Aristote. Édition critique, traduction française et introduction /

This volume contains the first critical edition of the Summa Alexandrinorum , that is the medieval Latin translation made in 1243 by Hermann the German of an Arabic abridgment of the Nicomachean Ethics known as the Iḫtiṣār al-Iskandarānīyīn . It is accompanied by a French translation. The volume also contains a full study of the manuscript tradition of the Latin text and sets out the principles used in the edition, which takes account, where necessary, of the Arabic version of the text, which has survived in the form of fragments. A study of the origin of the Summa Alexandrinorum and the relations between the Summa and the fragments and testimonies which are extant in other traditions and different languages completes the volume. Ce volume propose la toute première édition critique, accompagnée d'une traduction française, de la Summa Alexandrinorum , traduction latine médiévale exécutée en 1243 par Hermann l'Allemand d'un abrégé arabe de l' Éthique à Nicomaque connu sous le titre d' Iḫtiṣār al-Iskandarānīyīn . Il présente également une étude complète de la tradition manuscrite du texte latin, et les principes d'édition adoptés dans l'édition, qui prennent en compte, ponctuellement, la version arabe du texte qui a été conservée sous la forme de fragments. L'étude de l'origine de la Summa Alexandrinorum et des relations entre la Summa et les fragments et témoignages conservés dans d'autres langues et appartenant à autant de traditions parallèles et diverses vient compléter ce volume.

From the Greeks to the Arabs and Beyond written by Hans Daiber, is a six volume collection of Daiber's scattered writings, journal articles, essays and encyclopaedia entries on Greek-Syriac-Arabic translations, Islamic theology and Sufism, the history of science, Islam in Europe, manuscripts and the history of oriental studies. In L'art du siège néo-assyrien , Fabrice De Backer investigates the people, materials, tools, machines, and tactics employed during the first millenium B.C. by the Neo-Assyrians to take and defend fortified cities. The story of besieged people, along with their customs, treatment by the winners, and consequences of the conquest are also discussed. Based on the combination of archaeology, iconography, philology and ethnographical comparisons, the analysis of the particular assets of siege-engines or architectural features are developed, along with the best means employed at that time to overcome them. De Backer proposes more than a simple census of all the means known so far, he also develops and enhances our knowledge of siege-warfare in a pragmatic and efficient manner.

Le retour spectaculaire du refoulé est l'un des déterminants du rythme particulier de la modernité. La machine y a aussi sa part. Quand les désirs et les peurs liés à la machine, abandonnés, silencieux, cachés derrière le voile du progrès, émergent, ils créent une sorte de phénoménologie de la machine, qui pendant de nombreuses décennies constitue un point de référence pour des activités littéraires et artistiques. La machine s'y trouve, pour ainsi dire, intériorisée ; inextricablement liée aux affects et aux désirs, elle devient ce que je me propose d'appeler machine intime. Ce processus est étudié ici à travers les œuvres de Baudelaire, Proust, Bataille, Barthes, et quelques autres, dont Roussel, Artaud, Didi-Huberman, ainsi que dans la littérature érotique contemporaine. The spectacular return of the repressed is one of the determinants of the particular rhythm of modernity. The machine also plays its part. When the desires and fears linked to the machine, abandoned, silent, hidden behind the veil of progress, emerge, they create a kind of phenomenology of the machine, which for many decades constituted a point of reference for literary and artistic activities. The machine is, so to speak, interiorised; inextricably linked to affects and desires, it becomes what I propose to call an intimate machine. This process is explored here through the works of Baudelaire, Proust, Bataille, Barthes and others, including Roussel, Artaud and Didi-Huberman, as well as in contemporary erotic literature.

The debate on Orientalism began some fifty years ago in the wake of decolonization. While initially considered a turning point, Edward Said's Orientalism (1978) was in fact part of a larger academic endeavor - the political critique of "colonial science" - that had already significantly impacted the humanities and social sciences. In a recent attempt to broaden the debate, the papers collected in this volume, offered at various seminars and an international symposium held in Paris in 2010-2011, critically examine whether Orientalism, as knowledge and as creative expression, was in fact fundamentally subservient to Western domination. By raising new issues, the papers shift the focus from the center to the peripheries, thus analyzing the impact on local societies of a major intellectual and institutional movement that necessarily changed not only their world, but the ways in which they represented their world. World history, which assumes a plurality of perspectives, leads us to observe that the Saidian critique applies to powers other than Western European ones - three case studies are considered here: the Ottoman, Russian (and Soviet), and Chinese empires. Other essays in this volume proceed to analyze how post-independence states have made use of the tremendous accumulation of knowledge and representations inherited from previous colonial regimes for the sake of national identity, as well as how scholars change and adapt what was once a hegemonic discourse for their own purposes. What emerges is a new landscape in which to situate research on non-Western cultures and societies, and a road-map leading readers beyond the restrictive dichotomy of a confrontation between West and East. Jean Yoyotte (1927-2009), directeur d'études à l'EPHE, section des sciences religieuses, professeur au Collège deFrance, directeur de la Mission des fouilles de Tanis pendant vingt ans, fut un immense savant dont les curiosités multiples et intarissables ont fait qu'il n'y aguère de thèmes et de périodes de l'histoire, de la géographie et de la pensée religieuse de l'Égypte ancienne qu'il n'ait abordés à un moment ou un autre de sa carrière. Il eut cependant des sujets de prédilection qu'il n'a jamais abandonnés et pour lesquels il fut un initiateur et un maître hors pair. C'est lui qui suscita l'intérêt, qui ne s'est jamais démenti depuis, pour la Troisième Période Intermédiaire, et plus généralement le premier millénaire avant notre ère, époque longtemps négligée, voire tenue en mépris, par nombre d'égyptologues.

La science-fiction française au XXe siècle (1900-1968) : Essai de socio-poétique d'un genre en émergence /

Cet essai est la première étude d'envergure sur la science-fiction française (SFF) du XXe s. (jusqu'à 1968). Évitant le double écueil de l'élitisme et du populisme, l'auteur propose de voir la science-fiction comme une poétique de l'altérité dans les domaines du socio-historique et du bio-écologique. À partir des études d'historiens et de théoriciens majeurs de la science-fiction (D. Suvin, I.F. Clarke, R. Scholes, G. Klein, M. Angenot), des travaux sur l'imaginaire social (C. Castoriadis) et sur la sociologie des biens symboliques de P. Bourdieu, il tente de répondre à une série de questions: comment, en dépit de leur état florissant, l'anticipation et le roman scientifique français n'ont-ils pu déboucher sur un mouvement comparable à celui de la science-fiction américaine des années 1920? À quoi attribuer la crise persistante de la science-fiction française, avant et après les années 1950, date de la découverte de la science-fiction américaine en France par l'action notamment de Boris Vian et Raymond Queneau? L'auteur a cherché une réponse à ces questions dans la poétique sociale du genre. Retournant aux textes, il réalise une vue en coupe de la SFF à travers cinq modèles socio-discursifs majeurs représentés par Rosny Aîné, Maurice Renard, Jacques Spitz, B.R. Bruss, Stefan Wul. Cette étude intéressera les professeurs de littérature française et de litterature comparée (les américanistes tout particulièrement), ceux qui travaillent sur la science-fiction et les parallittératures et sur la relation de la science et de la littérature.
