Quand les désirs et les peurs liés à la machine, abandonnés, silencieux, cachés derrière le voile du progrès, émergent, ils créent une sorte de phénoménologie de la machine, qui pendant de nombreuses décennies constitue un point de référence pour des activités littéraires et artistiques. La machine s'y trouve, pour ainsi dire, intériorisée ; inextricablement liée aux affects et aux désirs, elle devient ce que je me propose d'appeler machine intime. Ce processus est étudié ici à travers les œuvres de Baudelaire, Proust, Bataille, Barthes, et quelques autres, dont Roussel, Artaud, Didi-Huberman, ainsi que dans la littérature érotique contemporaine. The spectacular return of the repressed is one of the determinants of the particular rhythm of modernity. The machine also plays its part. When the desires and fears linked to the machine, abandoned, silent, hidden behind the veil of progress, emerge, they create a kind of phenomenology of the machine, which for many decades constituted a point of reference for literary and artistic activities. The machine is, so to speak, interiorised; inextricably linked to affects and desires, it becomes what I propose to call an intimate machine. This process is explored here through the works of Baudelaire, Proust, Bataille, Barthes and others, including Roussel, Artaud and Didi-Huberman, as well as in contemporary erotic literature.

Based on the combination of archaeology, iconography, philology and ethnographical comparisons, the analysis of the particular assets of siege-engines or architectural features are developed, along with the best means employed at that time to overcome them. De Backer proposes more than a simple census of all the means known so far, he also develops and enhances our knowledge of siege-warfare in a pragmatic and efficient manner.

Évitant le double écueil de l'élitisme et du populisme, l'auteur propose de voir la science-fiction comme une poétique de l'altérité dans les domaines du socio-historique et du bio-écologique. À partir des études d'historiens et de théoriciens majeurs de la science-fiction (D. Suvin, I.F. Clarke, R. Scholes, G. Klein, M. Angenot), des travaux sur l'imaginaire social (C. Castoriadis) et sur la sociologie des biens symboliques de P. Bourdieu, il tente de répondre à une série de questions: comment, en dépit de leur état florissant, l'anticipation et le roman scientifique français n'ont-ils pu déboucher sur un mouvement comparable à celui de la science-fiction américaine des années 1920? À quoi attribuer la crise persistante de la science-fiction française, avant et après les années 1950, date de la découverte de la science-fiction américaine en France par l'action notamment de Boris Vian et Raymond Queneau? L'auteur a cherché une réponse à ces questions dans la poétique sociale du genre. This book deals with the nature and function of the good in Plato's philosophy, by focusing on the dialogue explicitly devoted to it: the Philebus. It provides a comprehensive commentary of this difficult dialogue in which almost all the themes of Plato's philosophy are discussed or alluded to. The author shows that a scrupulous analysis and reconstruction of its argumentative progress makes it possible to discover the unity between these different topics, and argues that this unity lies in the fact that Plato develops there what he was calling for notably in the Republic, id est a (dialectical) science of the good (or 'agathology'). Read from this viewpoint, the Philebus appears as a dialogue of tremendous importance for the understanding of Plato's philosophy as a whole.

In Morocco, the founding myths of healing cults and rituals illustrate conclusively the elaboration of the symbolism and dynamics of power, both in local and national contexts. These dynamics unfold specifically in terms of genealogical representations and mystical initiations, as well as in socially-recognized capacities to communicate with the supernatural. The analysis centered on the confrontation of saints and kings permits the expansion, to the national level and beyond, of the hierarchical tensions between personal charisma and sharifian charisma. Thus, the myth and its ritual expressions open up possibilities for socio-political renewal by the margins, or even more a renewal, taking place presently, in the form of a revolutionary millenarianism.
