Dans cet ouvrage, Ahmed Oulddali étudie les idées psychologiques et épistémologiques qui sous-tendent l'exégèse spéculative de Faḫr al-Dīn al-Rāzī. Connu pour être l'un des rares théologiens musulmans à avoir proposé une interprétation philosophique du Coran, Rāzī se révèle ici un penseur novateur, profondément convaincu de la nécessité de prendre appui sur les sciences et les méthodes rationnelles pour appréhender la révélation. Son rejet formel du littéralisme et ses multiples emprunts à la philosophie d'Avicenne apparaissent comme la conséquence d'une conception de la connaissance dans laquelle la raison joue un rôle déterminant. Basée sur une documentation très riche, comprenant de nombreuses sources arabes, la présente étude offre une vue d'ensemble des enjeux philosophiques, théologiques et exégétiques auxquels répond la pensée de Rāzī. In Reason and Revelation in Islam , Ahmed Oulddali presents the psychological and epistemological ideas which underlie Faḫr al-Dīn al-Rāzī's speculative exegesis. Known as one of the few Muslim theologians to have proposed a philosophical interpretation of the Qurʾān, Rāzī appears here as an innovative thinker, deeply convinced of the need to rely on rational methods to understand revelation. His formal rejection of literalism and his multiple borrowings from Avicenna's philosophy are explained as a consequence of a conception of knowledge in which reason plays a decisive role. Richly infused with illustrative texts and original translations from Arab sources, Oulddali's book offers an overview of the philosophical, theological and exegetical issues to which the thinking of Rāzī responds.

David, a member of the Platonic school in Alexandria in the sixth century, is credited with several commentaries on Aristotle's logic: those commentaries, and their Armenian translations, form the subject of this book. An introduction, which discusses David and his place in the Greek and the Armenian traditions, is followed by a series of studies of the relations between the Greek texts and their Armenian translations: the aims are, first, to assess the value of the translations for the constitution of the original Greek, and secondly, to consider the ways in which the Armenian translations adapted the texts to suit their new readership. This volume consists of an edition, a translation and a commentary of the most important fragments of 4QInstruction. Initially it deals with the linguistic characteristics of the scroll highlighting the links between 4QInstruction and Ben Sira, and also with the Community Rule and the Hodayot. It then investigates the Sapiential fragments dealing with poverty, husband-wife and parent-child relationships. Finally it examines the eschatological fragments. The work seeks to improve the edition and understanding of this fundamental text enhancing our knowledge of the history and development of thinking at Qumran. Moreover, it examines links which 4QInstruction establishes between purely Sapiential discourse and descriptions of eschatological judgement. This study substantially illuminates our understanding of the Wisdom movement in the early intertestamental period.

This book in two volumes gives the status quaestionis of the Qumran Copper Scroll, fifty years after its discovery. The first part of volume one, amply illustrated with graphics and images, gives the technical expertise of its state of preservation together with the proposals for treatment developed by the laboratory EDF-Valectra for its restoration-conservation. The production of a facsimile by means of galvanoplasty and digitalized images is explained. The second part of volume one gives a largely renewed edition of the engraved Hebrew text with an up-to-date commentary, French and English translations, and indices. The second volume of nearly 400 plates publishes photographs and X-Rays of each segment before and after treatment, as well as the reproduction by means of galvanoplasty and digitalized images.

The present volume is the result of a team research which gathered biblical scholars, philologists, and historians of religions, on the issue of the multiple \'Interpretations of Moses\' inherited from the ancient mediterranean cultures. The concrete outcome of this comparative inquiry is the common translation and commentary of the fragments from the works of the mysterious Artapanus. The comparative perspective suggested here is not so much methodological, or thematic. It is first of all an invitation to cross disciplinary boundaries and to take account of the contributions of diverse cultures to the formation of a single mythology, in the case, a Moses mythology. With respect to Judea, Greece, Egypt or Rome, and further more an emerging christianity and its \'gnostic\' counterpart, the figure of Moses is at the heart of a cross-cultural dialogue the pieces of which, if they can be seperated for the confort of their specific study, mostly gain by being put together. Ce volume est le fruit d'un travail d'équipe, qui a réuni des biblistes, des philologues, et des historiens des religions autour des multiples « Interprétations de Moïse » que nous ont léguées les cultures de la Méditerranée antique. Le résultat pratique de cette enquête comparatiste culmine dans la traduction et le commentaire à « douze mains » des fragments du mystérieux Artapan, qui ouvrent le volume. Le comparatisme proposé dans le présent volume ne se veut ni méthodologique ni thématique, mais vise d'abord à franchir les frontières disciplinaires, tout en envisageant les apports culturels respectifs contribuant à la formation d'une mythologie, en l'occurrence celle de Moïse. Entre la Judée, l'Egypte, la Grèce, Rome, et bien-sûr le christianisme naissant et l'univers « gnostique » qui l'accompagne, la figure de Moïse est au cœur d'un dialogue, dont les pièces, si elles peuvent être disjointes pour la commodité de l'étude, gagnent surtout à être rapprochées.

The significance of Simplicius' commentary lies in the fact that it is a Neoplatonist interpretation of a Stoic text. This volume presents the first critical edition based on all the known manuscripts of this work and offers, in contrast to the edition of Schweighäuser (1800) and the recapitulation of this edition by Dübner (1840), a text which is more complete and improved. A long introduction places the work in the philosophical and historical context of its time and characterises it as a spiritual exercise. The edition is preceded by a summary of the history of the text.

Winner of the 2015 Jozef IJsewijn Prize for best first book on a Neo-Latin topic Early modern commentaries on Statius' Thebaid have been little studied; even that by Barth (1664-5), which holds a conspicuous place among them, has only been taken into account now and then, and often in a rather superficial way. The present book, which makes use of unpublished archival material, offers a comprehensive overview of these works (contexts, contents, interconnections). It is particularly interested in 16th-17th commentators and strives to give Barth's achievement the attention it deserves. By closely looking at the various ways in which the commentaries respond to Statius' poem, but also at the various kinds of discourse they present, it casts a new light on the reception of the Thebaid and on the early modern practice of commentary-writing. Les anciens commentaires imprimés de la Thébaïde de Stace ont été peu étudiés ; même celui de Barth (1664-5), qui occupe parmi eux une place éminente, n'a été pris en compte que de manière ponctuelle et souvent superficielle. Le présent ouvrage, étayé par des documents d'archives inédits, offre un examen général de ces travaux (contextes, contenus, filiations). Il s'intéresse particulièrement aux commentateurs des 16e-17e s. et s'efforce d'accorder à Barth l'attention qu'il mérite. En se penchant sur les différentes façons dont les exégèses répondent au poème de Stace, mais aussi sur les différents types de discours qu'elles présentent, il apporte un éclairage nouveau sur la réception de la Thébaïde et sur la pratique du commentaire au début de l'époque moderne.
