Correspondance entre François Laydevant et Albert Perbal, 1927-1952 : dialogue du missionnaire et du missiologue /

This volume presents the 25 years correspondence of a Roman Catholic missionary, Fr. François Laydevant, who worked in Lesotho from 1905 to 1954, with a Roman Catholic missiologist, Fr. Albert Perbal, based in Rome, Italy. The exchange of letters was provoked by the missiologist who needed direct information from the mission field for his own research and teaching, and first of all in order to fulfil his role of consultant with the Institute for the Study of African Languages and Cultures in London and the Conference Romaine des Missions Catholiques d'Afrique in Rome. The main result of the correspondence, apart from fulfilling the above stated purpose, was to propel Fr. Laydevant into fruitful anthropological, ethnological and historical research into Lesotho and its people. The correspondence deals with many contemporary missiological problems of the time. It is also a primary source for the history of the Church in Lesotho, in particular the Roman Catholic Church. FRENCH TEXT Ce volume comprend la correspondance de vingt-cinq ans d'un missionnaire catholique, le Père François Laydevant, qui travailla au Lesotho de 1905 à 1954, avec un missiologue catholique, le Père Albert Perbal, qui demeurait à Rome. C'est le missiologue qui provoqua l'échange de lettres. Il avait besoin d'information directe à partir du champ missionnaire pour ses recherches et son enseignement et d'abord pour remplir son rôle auprès de l'Institut pour l'Étude des langues et des Cultures Africaines à Londres et auprès de la Conférence Romaine des Missions Catholiques d'Afrique à Rome. Le résultat le plus évident de cette correspondance fut de lancer le Père Laydevant dans les recherches ethnologiques, anthropologiques et historiques sur le Lesotho et son peuple. La correspondance aborde plusieurs questions missiologiques contemporaines au cours de ces 25 ans et demeure une source primaire pour l'histoire de l'Église au Lesotho, en particulier l'Église Catholique.

After orientalism : critical perspectives on western agency and eastern re-appropriations /

The debate on Orientalism began some fifty years ago in the wake of decolonization. While initially considered a turning point, Edward Said's Orientalism (1978) was in fact part of a larger academic endeavor - the political critique of "colonial science" - that had already significantly impacted the humanities and social sciences. In a recent attempt to broaden the debate, the papers collected in this volume, offered at various seminars and an international symposium held in Paris in 2010-2011, critically examine whether Orientalism, as knowledge and as creative expression, was in fact fundamentally subservient to Western domination. By raising new issues, the papers shift the focus from the center to the peripheries, thus analyzing the impact on local societies of a major intellectual and institutional movement that necessarily changed not only their world, but the ways in which they represented their world. World history, which assumes a plurality of perspectives, leads us to observe that the Saidian critique applies to powers other than Western European ones - three case studies are considered here: the Ottoman, Russian (and Soviet), and Chinese empires. Other essays in this volume proceed to analyze how post-independence states have made use of the tremendous accumulation of knowledge and representations inherited from previous colonial regimes for the sake of national identity, as well as how scholars change and adapt what was once a hegemonic discourse for their own purposes. What emerges is a new landscape in which to situate research on non-Western cultures and societies, and a road-map leading readers beyond the restrictive dichotomy of a confrontation between West and East. The codex Parisino-petropolitanus is one of the earliest witnesses of the handwritten transmission of the Qurʾanic text which has survived to this day. The various fragments which were part of the original manuscript are scattered among various collections; once put together, they provide a unique picture of the state of the text during the 7th century (orthography and textual peculiarities) and of the circumstances in which the canonical version as we know it today took shape physically. The present study, first of its kind, paves the way for a more accurate understanding of the beginning of Islam, based on a significant document, and of the evolution of the Qurʾan during that period. Le codex Parisino-petropolitanus est l'un des plus anciens témoins de la transmission manuscrite du texte du Coran qui aient été conservés. Ses différents fragments sont dispersés entre plusieurs collections; une fois mis ensemble, ils donnent un aperçu unique sur l'état du texte au 7e siècle (orthographe et particularités textuelles) et sur les conditions dans lesquelles s'est organisée matériellement la constitution de la version canonique telle que nous la connaissons. Cette étude, première de son genre, ouvre la voie à une compréhension plus fine, appuyée sur un document significatif, des premiers temps de l'islam et de l'évolution du Coran au cours de cette période.

In recent years, there has been an increased interest in the study of the concept of time in the Ottoman Empire. Many existing studies focused on the technical aspects, e.g. the measure of time, and the instruments to do this (like clepsydras, water clocks, hourglasses, and sundials found on the facades of mosques and medreses). Other aspects were neglected, like the various Ottoman experiments with time and the Ottomans' conceptions of time. This collective volume addresses several of these forgotten aspects of the political, social and cultural modalities of time in the Ottoman Empire.

"The site of Douch had never been excavated at the time Serge Sauneron, director of the IFAO, began de-sanding the area of the temple of the early Roman Empire in 1976. Before reaching the paved floors, the excavations revealed several levels of occupation under the Late Roman Empire. These campaigns and those subsequent, up until 1994, revealed the existence of several buildings preceding Roman times, such as a Ptolemaic brick sanctuary beneath the temple and other even older buildings, at the least dating back to the Persian time.The history of the archaeological works is followed by six chapters on the architecture of the buildings in the area: the enclosures and their doors, the courtyards and their fittings, the temple and its column porch, the chapel attached to a fault in the ground, probably a place of primitive worship. The text is amply illustrated with maps, sections and elevations. Examination of the construction details enabled to determine the chronological succession of the buildings, and to explain some anomalies or to restitute some of the parts destroyed.The dating of the main brick buildings and their remodeling was possible thanks to Michel Wuttmann who, from 2007 to 2011, had plants extracted from the walls, which were then collected and analyzed by radiocarbon. Dans les manuels d'histoire de la littérature française, on s'en tient très généralement à une périodisation par siècles. C'est une option qui risque toujours de fausser la perspective, notamment là où il s'agit de textes écrits pendant les décennies transitoires. Ainsi, pour ce qui est de la littérature de l'époque qu'on a coutume d'appeler l'automne du moyen âge ou l'aube de la Renaissance: on a tendance à considérer les textes parus avant 1500 comme relevant de la littérature médiévale, et à ne pas trop insister sur les traits modernes qu'éventuellement ils présentent; de la même manière, ceux qui ont été publiés après 1500, appartiendraient plutôt à la littérature moderne, et ne devraient donc pas trop sentir le moyen âge. Le point de vue qu'on adopte ici est tout autre: la littérature du siècle 1450-1550 n'est pas présentée comme un ensemble de textes simplement transitoires, mais elle est considérée telle qu'en elle-même. Aussi, les (fragments de) textes retenus et commentés dans ce manuel-florilège ont-ils été choisis sans parti-pris médiéval ou moderne: ils ont tous rapport à un sujet éminemment actuel à l'époque en question, celui des états successifs qui jalonnent la vie de l'homme, du stade embryonnaire à l'état de félicité ou de damnation éternelles, post-mortem.

Birth Houses (Mammisis) are important components of late Egyptian temple complexes but have not been investigated in detail since the fundamental study of François Daumas published in 1958. In the meantime, new archaeological findings as well as re-evaluations of theology and piety in Greco-Roman Egypt have considerably expanded our traditional understanding of these extraordinary buildings. Therefore, reassessment of phenomena and expanded research approaches need to be undertaken.This book presents the printed versions of the lectures given by international Egyptologists at the IFAO in Cairo on March 27-28, 2019, as part of the 1st Colloquium on "Mammisis of Egypt". In the publication, criteria and reconsiderations are put up for discussion that can be decisive for the identification and definition of Mammisis. The spectrum of topics ranges from theological basics (including the significant birth cycle) and typical features, through historical development and cultic events, to the architecture of these temple buildings. Special motifs, theoretical and iconographic concepts and finally the persistence of certain rites in modern Egypt are also covered. One chapter introduces current scientific projects and their methods that are dedicated to selected mammisis or chapels (Coptos, Deir el-Medina, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae, Bahariya, Kellis, Jebel Barkal).Numerous illustrations complement the contributions. They contain new material from excavations that is being published for the first time.
Les maisons de naissance (mammisis) sont des éléments importants des temples égyptiens de l'époque tardive, mais elles n'ont pas fait l'objet d'études détaillées depuis celle fondamentale de François Daumas, publiée en 1958. Depuis lors, des découvertes archéologiques et de nouvelles approches de la théologie et de la piété de l'Égypte gréco-romaine ont considérablement amélioré notre compréhension de ces bâtiments exceptionnels. Il est donc nécessaire de faire le point sur le sujet en élargissant les techniques d'approche.Ce livre rassemble les textes des communications présentées par des spécialistes internationaux dans le cadre du 1er colloque sur les mammisis d'Égypte, qui s'est tenu à l'Ifao les 27 et 28 mars 2019. Dans le cadre de cette publication, le réexamen des données disponibles est mis en discussion, avec l'établissement de critères permettant l'identification et la définition des mammisis.
