In al-Suyūṭī's (1445-1515) The Perfect Handbook of the Qurʾānic Sciences , we find a complete description of the problems concerning the Qurʾānic text that still arise today, of the solutions proposed and the methods employed. It is a collection of multiple accounts, both prior to and contemporary with the author, and not simply an isolated, subjective opinion. His formal rejection of literalism and his multiple borrowings from Avicenna's philosophy are explained as a consequence of a conception of knowledge in which reason plays a decisive role. The historical periods and geographical areas that arise - from Greco-Roman antiquity to Heidegger's philosophy, from the Syriac and Arabic traditions to the Western world - make it possible, in sum, not only to indicate how the Rhetoric has been read and interpreted, but also to offer general perspectives on the practice of explicating ancient texts. Le présent volume rassemble treize articles envisagés comme autant de chapitres d'un livre et dédiés à l'histoire, à la méthode et à la pratique des commentaires à la Rhétorique d'Aristote. Winner of the 2015 Jozef IJsewijn Prize for best first book on a Neo-Latin topic Early modern commentaries on Statius' Thebaid have been little studied; even that by Barth (1664-5), which holds a conspicuous place among them, has only been taken into account now and then, and often in a rather superficial way. The present book, which makes use of unpublished archival material, offers a comprehensive overview of these works (contexts, contents, interconnections). It is particularly interested in 16th-17th commentators and strives to give Barth's achievement the attention it deserves. By closely looking at the various ways in which the commentaries respond to Statius' poem, but also at the various kinds of discourse they present, it casts a new light on the reception of the Thebaid and on the early modern practice of commentary-writing. Les anciens commentaires imprimés de la Thébaïde de Stace ont été peu étudiés ; même celui de Barth (1664-5), qui occupe parmi eux une place éminente, n'a été pris en compte que de manière ponctuelle et souvent superficielle. Le présent ouvrage, étayé par des documents d'archives inédits, offre un examen général de ces travaux (contextes, contenus, filiations). Il s'intéresse particulièrement aux commentateurs des 16e-17e s. et s'efforce d'accorder à Barth l'attention qu'il mérite. En se penchant sur les différentes façons dont les exégèses répondent au poème de Stace, mais aussi sur les différents types de discours qu'elles présentent, il apporte un éclairage nouveau sur la réception de la Thébaïde et sur la pratique du commentaire au début de l'époque moderne.

The first application to the European Commission of Human Rights was received in 1955. In over forty years, the Commission has registered more than 40 000 applications. This volume contains the first edition of the Latin version of the Middle Commentary of Averroes on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics Book X, the original arabic version being lost. It is accompanied by an annotated French translation. The volume also contains a full study of the manuscript tradition of the Latin text and sets outs the principles used in the edition, which takes into account, where necessary, the Hebrew version of the Commentary. Two further studies complete the volume: the first is devoted to the genre of "Middle Commentary" ( talḫīṣ ); the second considers how Averroes uses an analogy with medicine to place ethics at the heart of practical philosophy, and how, in a manner that is foreign to Aristotle, he conceives of ethics as a "science." Ce volume propose la toute première édition, accompagnée d'une traduction française annotée, de la version latine du Commentaire moyen d'Averroès à l'Éthique à Nicomaque d'Aristote Livre X, dont l'original arabe est perdu. Dans le Sophiste de Platon, un mystérieux étranger venu d'Élée entreprend de définir méthodiquement le rival le plus farouche du philosophe, le sophiste. Sa définition est cependant interrompue par une tentative de réfuter l'ontologie de Parménide. La signification propre de cette réfutation et sa relation exacte avec la chasse au sophiste demeurent très controversées dans la littérature secondaire. Ce livre propose un commentaire suivi du dialogue montrant comment la distinction, souvent négligée, entre dialectique et apparences permet de trancher dans les controverses suscitées par le Sophiste , tout en restaurant l'unité et l'originalité profondes de la pensée de Platon. In Plato's Sophist , a mysterious Eleatic Stranger, the main character of the dialogue, undertakes a systematic definition of the philosopher's fiercest rival, the sophist. His hunt for a definition of the sophist, however, is interrupted by an attempt to refute the ontology of Parmenides. The philosophical significance of this refutation and its exact relationship to the sought-after definition remains a matter of great scholarly dispute. This book, by means of a running commentary on the dialogue, argues that the oft-neglected distinction between dialectic and appearances is not only the key to solving this and other exegetical conundrums, but also reveals the unity and originality of Plato's argument in the Sophist .
