Dans Le Coran par lui-même , Anne-Sylvie Boisliveau livre une analyse passionnante de la manière dont le Coran est l'architecte de sa propre image. Loin d'être un texte sans relief, celui-ci utilise un vocabulaire, des procédés rhétoriques et une argumentation soigneusement choisis pour orienter l'image qu'auditeurs ou lecteurs se feront de lui. Une analyse serrée du vocabulaire autoréférentiel montre que le Coran se décrit lui-même comme Ecriture « façon judéo-chrétienne » représentant un enjeu de communication. Mais surtout, par un triple discours - sur les actions divines, sur les Ecritures révélées antérieurement, telles la Bible, et sur la fonction prophétique -, le Coran se confère à lui-même le monopole de l'autorité issue de la révélation divine et pousse l'auditeur/lecteur à s'y soumettre. In Le Coran par lui-même , Anne-Sylvie Boisliveau provides a ground-breaking analysis of the way the Qurʾān is the architect of its own image. Far from being a flat text, the Qurʾān uses carefully chosen vocabulary, rhetorical tools and argumentation to direct the image that listeners or readers will then have in mind. A close analysis of its self-referential vocabulary shows that the Qurʾān describes itself as a Scripture "in a Judeo-Christian style" which communicative function is stressed. By a triple discourse (on divine actions, on previous Scriptures such as the Bible and on prophethood), the Qurʾān grants itself the monopoly of divine authority through revelation and pushes the listener/reader into a decisive submission. This collective volume presents the proceedings of an international symposium co-organized by Sorbonne university and Geneva university in Paris between February 12th and 15th 2015. The aim of the such a meeting was to establish a "state of the art" of the papyrological documentation known to us for this specific period of pharaonic history (letters, accounting documents, inventories, working teams' logbooks, personnel registers). By bringing together most specialists of this type of historic sources, it has enabled a complete presentation of the main series of documents from the Memphite area (papyri of Abusir and Sakkara), from Upper or Middle Egypt (Meir, Sharuna, Gebelein, Elephantine), or even from more remote places like the wadi el-Jarf harbour on the Red sea shores or Balat-Ayn Asil archives in the Dakhla oasis. Each contributor gives an overview of the available documentation and the most recent studies related to it. Numerous examples, some of them hitherto unpublished, are illustrated in this volume so as to better understand the way those lots are organized and to fully apprehend how the administration of this period was managed at the provincial as well as central level.

This volume presents the 25 years correspondence of a Roman Catholic missionary, Fr. François Laydevant, who worked in Lesotho from 1905 to 1954, with a Roman Catholic missiologist, Fr. Albert Perbal, based in Rome, Italy. The exchange of letters was provoked by the missiologist who needed direct information from the mission field for his own research and teaching, and first of all in order to fulfil his role of consultant with the Institute for the Study of African Languages and Cultures in London and the Conference Romaine des Missions Catholiques d'Afrique in Rome. The main result of the correspondence, apart from fulfilling the above stated purpose, was to propel Fr. Laydevant into fruitful anthropological, ethnological and historical research into Lesotho and its people. The correspondence deals with many contemporary missiological problems of the time. It is also a primary source for the history of the Church in Lesotho, in particular the Roman Catholic Church. FRENCH TEXT Ce volume comprend la correspondance de vingt-cinq ans d'un missionnaire catholique, le Père François Laydevant, qui travailla au Lesotho de 1905 à 1954, avec un missiologue catholique, le Père Albert Perbal, qui demeurait à Rome. C'est le missiologue qui provoqua l'échange de lettres. Il avait besoin d'information directe à partir du champ missionnaire pour ses recherches et son enseignement et d'abord pour remplir son rôle auprès de l'Institut pour l'Étude des langues et des Cultures Africaines à Londres et auprès de la Conférence Romaine des Missions Catholiques d'Afrique à Rome. Le résultat le plus évident de cette correspondance fut de lancer le Père Laydevant dans les recherches ethnologiques, anthropologiques et historiques sur le Lesotho et son peuple. La correspondance aborde plusieurs questions missiologiques contemporaines au cours de ces 25 ans et demeure une source primaire pour l'histoire de l'Église au Lesotho, en particulier l'Église Catholique.

This book presents proceedings of the conference devoted to rock art and graffiti studies in Egypt and Sudan that took place in Cairo from 10th to 12th November, 2019. The thematic spectrum of the contributions is very wide in terms of both their geographical and their chronological range, encompassing figural and textual sources dating from the Late Palaeolithic through the Predynastic, Dynastic, and Graeco-Roman periods, up to Christian and Islamic times. Many of the papers combine evidence from various archaeological domains and also attempt to better integrate graffiti and rock art materials in search of a common ground for research. Thus, the volume provides a good overview of the current state of investigations in these two fields of study in Egypt and Nubia. A book co-published with the Polish Center of Mediterranean Archeology, University of Warsaw.

Le spectre couvert par les contributions est très large, tant sur le plan géographique que chronologique, puisqu'il englobe des sources figuratives et textuelles datant du Paléolithique supérieur, des périodes prédynastique, dynastique et gréco-romaine, jusqu'aux époques chrétienne et islamique. Can the Spirit be lost ? Laurence Decousu answers these questions by studying the reconciliation of penitents and those who have separated themselves from the Church. Ever since the Middle Ages, theology has held that the Spirit is given through rites celebrated once for all : Baptism, Confirmation, Order. The Church Fathers did not see these rites as transmitting the Spirit and the effects of the Spirit. For them, reception of the Spirit depended on a divine initiative that was direct, free and sovereign. This study is an important contribution to the renewal of pneumatology, pastoral practice and ecumenical relations.

Souvent absente du débat sociétal à propos des animaux, la perspective historique chrétienne proposée dans ce volume se veut une contribution originale à la réflexion actuelle sur le statut juridique et éthique des animaux. La restauration de la création aims to examine the status of animals in ancient and medieval Christian thought following an eschatological perspective, that is, focusing on the question of the salvation of animals according to the divine plan. The volume is articulated in three parts: Biblical sources, in particular the promise of the renewal of creation according to Rm 8, 21; Patristic and medieval doctrinal elaborations on the question; finally, contemporary considerations regarding the status of animals in our societies. Often absent from the current social debate on the subject, the historical Christian perspective which this volume proposes is intended as an original contribution to today's ongoing reflexion on the legal and ethical status of animals.

The debate on Orientalism began some fifty years ago in the wake of decolonization. While initially considered a turning point, Edward Said's Orientalism (1978) was in fact part of a larger academic endeavor - the political critique of "colonial science" - that had already significantly impacted the humanities and social sciences. In a recent attempt to broaden the debate, the papers collected in this volume, offered at various seminars and an international symposium held in Paris in 2010-2011, critically examine whether Orientalism, as knowledge and as creative expression, was in fact fundamentally subservient to Western domination. By raising new issues, the papers shift the focus from the center to the peripheries, thus analyzing the impact on local societies of a major intellectual and institutional movement that necessarily changed not only their world, but the ways in which they represented their world. World history, which assumes a plurality of perspectives, leads us to observe that the Saidian critique applies to powers other than Western European ones - three case studies are considered here: the Ottoman, Russian (and Soviet), and Chinese empires. Other essays in this volume proceed to analyze how post-independence states have made use of the tremendous accumulation of knowledge and representations inherited from previous colonial regimes for the sake of national identity, as well as how scholars change and adapt what was once a hegemonic discourse for their own purposes. What emerges is a new landscape in which to situate research on non-Western cultures and societies, and a road-map leading readers beyond the restrictive dichotomy of a confrontation between West and East. This volume gathers the proceedings of the Paris conference in Philonic studies (2017), consisting of 23 papers by contributors from 8 countries. Fifty years after the Lyon conference, it aimed at taking a retrospective look at the intellectual contexts and the academic fields in which Philonic studies have penetrated, as well as the ways in which they evolved. The work of the Alexandrian became of major importance in the history of philosophy. It has been studied as a source of cultured Christianity, in connection with Second Temple Judaism and the Alexandrian Jewish community, but also in the context of research on rabbinic Judaism, New Testament and philosophy of the imperial era. Ce volume rassemble les actes du colloque de Paris (2017), qui réunit 23 intervenants de 8 nationalités. Cinquante ans après le colloque de Lyon, il s'agissait de réfléchir aux milieux intellectuels et aux disciplines universitaires dans lesquels les études philoniennes avaient pénétré le monde de la recherche, les bases sur lesquelles elles avaient évolué. In Books 26-31 Ammianus Marcellinus deals with the period of the emperors Valentinian and Valens. The representatives of the new dynasty differ greatly from their predecessor Julian, both personally and in their style of government. The Empire is divided between the two rulers, and suffers increasingly from barbarian invasions. Faced with these changes, Ammianus adapts his historical method. His treatment of the events becomes less detailed and more critical. The years following on the death of Julian are painted in dark colours, as the disaster at Hadrianople casts its shadow before. The papers in this volume, on History and Historiography, Literary Composition and Crisis of Empire, were presented during the conference \'Ammianus after Julian\' held in 2005.
