This collective volume is devoted to the Phoenician and the Punic civilization studied for its own purpose but also for its relationship with contemporaneous cultures of the ancient Mediterranean. The first part discusses the various sources relating to the Phoenician and Punic world; a second part attempts to sum up the different facets of its material and cultural surrounding. The third part expounds the present state of our knowledge of the Phoenicians and the Punics in each of the large geographical areas where they have emerged. The work thus assembles clearly, conveniently and as completely as possible the basic facts that will allow specialists of fellow disciplines to initiate themselves, and well-informed researchers to complete or check easily their information. This volume includes a bibliography, illustrations, maps and indexes.

This book focuses on the role of the emperor and the image of the Roman Empire as a whole during the time period from Augustus to Constantine. It analyses this image by taking into account the epigraphic, literary, numismatic and archaeological sources from Phoenicia to Osrhoene and from Commagene to Arabia. While discussing Graeco-Roman cities and rural settlements among desert areas, it addresses celebrations as well as the organization and promotion of the imperial cult in the Near East. This includes the imperial cult's forms of expression of symbolic, political, and various other social or religious functions. This approach, therefore, explores the real and imaginary relationships that existed between the Roman Empire and the populations of the Syrian provinces.

The debate on Orientalism began some fifty years ago in the wake of decolonization. While initially considered a turning point, Edward Said's Orientalism (1978) was in fact part of a larger academic endeavor - the political critique of "colonial science" - that had already significantly impacted the humanities and social sciences. In a recent attempt to broaden the debate, the papers collected in this volume, offered at various seminars and an international symposium held in Paris in 2010-2011, critically examine whether Orientalism, as knowledge and as creative expression, was in fact fundamentally subservient to Western domination. By raising new issues, the papers shift the focus from the center to the peripheries, thus analyzing the impact on local societies of a major intellectual and institutional movement that necessarily changed not only their world, but the ways in which they represented their world. World history, which assumes a plurality of perspectives, leads us to observe that the Saidian critique applies to powers other than Western European ones - three case studies are considered here: the Ottoman, Russian (and Soviet), and Chinese empires. Other essays in this volume proceed to analyze how post-independence states have made use of the tremendous accumulation of knowledge and representations inherited from previous colonial regimes for the sake of national identity, as well as how scholars change and adapt what was once a hegemonic discourse for their own purposes. What emerges is a new landscape in which to situate research on non-Western cultures and societies, and a road-map leading readers beyond the restrictive dichotomy of a confrontation between West and East. In recent years, there has been an increased interest in the study of the concept of time in the Ottoman Empire. Many existing studies focused on the technical aspects, e.g. the measure of time, and the instruments to do this (like clepsydras, water clocks, hourglasses, and sundials found on the facades of mosques and medreses). Other aspects were neglected, like the various Ottoman experiments with time and the Ottomans' conceptions of time. This collective volume addresses several of these forgotten aspects of the political, social and cultural modalities of time in the Ottoman Empire.
