Stories of the Buddha : Being Selections from Jātaka /

Jātakas is one of the three-fold Pali Buddhist Canon or Pitakas. It contains around 550 stories from previous births of Buddha, both in human and animal forms. This illustrates the spiritual practices, acts, qualities, and personality of Buddha. The Jātaka stories narrate how Buddha plays the role of an intermediator, and gives a happy ending. Jātakas also narrate how to achieve Buddha-hood and narrates the story within the framework of Karma and rebirth. Jātakas were translated into many modern European and Indic languages such as German, Hindi, etc. Stories of the Buddha contains 47 selected tales collected from the original Jātakas, translated into English to make the teachings of Buddha alive in the minds of modern readers and scholars associated with Buddhism.

Intertextuality in the tales of Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav : a close reading of Sippurey Maʼasiyot /

Until 1806, Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav (1772-1810) disseminated his thoughts on redemption through homilies. In 1806, however, Nahman chose the genre of tales as an additional and innovative means of religious discourse. An academic close reading of all of the tales, known as Sippurey Ma'asiyot , has not yet been undertaken. As the first comprehensive scholarly work on the whole selection of tales and contrary to previous scholarship, this book does not reduce the tales to biographical expressions of Nahman's tormented soul and messianic aspirations. Instead, it treats them as religious literature where the concept of "intertextuality" is considered essential to explain how Nahman defines his theology of redemption and invites his listeners and readers to appropriate his religious world-view.

J.K. Elliott has been identified as one of the Main exponents of so-called thoroughgoing textual criticism. In Biblical Interpretation and African Traditional Religion , Helen C. John juxtaposes grassroots biblical interpretations from Owamboland, Namibia, with professional interpretations of selected New Testament texts, effectively demonstrating the capacity of grassroots interpretations to destabilise, challenge and nuance dominant professional interpretations. John uses a cross-cultural and dialogical approach - 'Cross-Cultural Biblical Interpretation Groups' - to explore the relationship between African Traditional Religion (ATR), Christianity and biblical interpretation in Owamboland, Namibia. She contextualises the grassroots Owambo interpretations using fieldwork experiences and ethnographic literature, thus heightening the cross-cultural encounter. In particular, John reflects on Western epistemologies and the Eurocentric interpretative trends that are brought into relief by the African interpretations gathered in Owamboland.
