Changing Christian Paradigms and their Implications for Modern Thought /

Though the Bible and creeds have provided a compass for Christianity from earliest times, the frameworks of thought within which they have been understood have constantly changed, the contribution of Augustine to these changes being fundamental. This book traces, first, these changes chronologically and shows how they have led to the separation of religion and science, faith and reason, supernatural and natural, and so to current materialism: but also to radical alterations to our understanding of God and his relationship to the world. The second part shows in more detail how these changes have altered the significance of major features of Christian faith and led to serious incoherences. And the third part shows, not only how pre-Augustinian and Biblical understandings cohere closely with modern science, but that they have radical implications for our understanding of man, his place in nature and survival of death, for Jesus Christ and for the role of the Churches.

A Brief History of Poverty Alleviation in Neoliberal Times /

This book is about implementation of poverty alleviation policy in recent times. It follows one poverty alleviation policy called Swaran Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana initiated in 1997, through three large cities: Mumbai, Delhi and Kochi. There are specific reasons why this policy was chosen. It reflects the dominant paradigm in strategy in recent times. It is built on women, self-help group collectives, microfinance and enterprise. The book spans five years of fieldwork (2009-14). It reproduces the circumstances of poor urban women, their families and the effect of policy designed to help them. Most significantly it examines policy execution at the local level. There is substantial difference in the manner in which the same policy is implemented in each city. The organization for implementation is also different and outcome is noticeably different as well. Consequently, com parisons are useful. In a manner the fieldwork also points to nature of 'trickle-down' that has occurred. India by then had experienced over two decades (1990-1 and 2013-14) of higher than historic growth. Large cities are high growth centres, prime location of wealth accumulation as well as trickle down. Travels into the ever-increasing margins of urban centres were unsettling, particularly in the mega cities. Trickle down evidently does not take care of the problem of mass absolute poverty. Direct policy interventions of several kinds are needed but overall as this volume brings out the scale of the problem is completely unrelated to public resources, organization and energy applied to it.

How does religion cope with changing situations? Are orthodoxy and liberalism really competing strategies? The essays in this volume argue three views. (1)Orthodoxy is not to be seen as the real and original form of a given religion, but as an idealized original form that should be construed as a construction in reaction to changes in time. (2) Over the ages, liberalism - despite its laudable strive for adaptation - has been less successful than generally assumed. This lesson from history can be quite important in view of the adaptation processes for Muslims in Western Europe. (3) Of great importance for the survival of religion seems to be a clear definition of the boundaries of religiously informed practices and ethics. Second, the author compares Halakhic Man to other contemporary writings of Soloveitchik. Third, he lays out the essay's philosophical background. My book develops a comprehensive diagnosis of the times by reviewing the rapidly growing field of critical theories that focus on structural paradoxes and social suffering. To address the complex challenges of the era of permacrisis, various emancipatory praxes are elaborated from the perspective of intersubjective (e.g., mimetic violence), technological (e.g., algorithmic reification), and discursive (e.g., cynical justification) distortions. In order to provide a synthetic framework, a new social contract is proposed, based on responsibility towards the particularistic other instead of universal justice.

Far too long, the relationship between European and African biblical scholarship has been a non-relationship. Jesus and the Samaritan woman : a speech act reading of John 4:1-42 /

This book deals with two aspects pertaining to the understanding of John. On the one hand it examines the style of the Gospel and on the other hand it introduces, for the first time in the study of the Fourth Gospel, a comprehensive speech act reading of a Johannine discourse. In the first chapter different approaches to Johannine style are identified, and the deficiencies current in perceptions regarding style are indicated. The second chapter deals with theoretical observations regarding the nature of style in terms of modern stylistics. It is suggested that a possible paradigm for a comprehensive approach to style is speech act theory. The next chapter contains a comprehensive speech act reading of John 4: 1-42. Finally, observations regarding style, and understanding Johannine texts, based on this speech act reading, is given. Not only does this study clarify the nature of Johannine style in more modern terms, but it also gives an indication of the enormous possibilities this theory holds for enhancing New Testament exegesis.
