As well as revealing the two underlying descriptive frameworks that Paul uses to explain his gospel about God's salvation - the interactive framework between God and humans, and the 'two-realm' framework - this book demonstrates that Paul's gospel consists of one 'peak point' that shows the central role of Jesus, and two 'sub-peaks' elucidating salvation.

The Syntax and Semantics of Wh-Clauses in Classical Greek : Relatives, Interrogatives, Exclamatives /

Adapting tools recently developed in general linguistics and dwelling on a solid corpus study, this book offers the first comprehensive view on Classical Greek wh -clauses since Monteil (1963) and scrutinizes how wh -items (ὅς, ὅστις, τίς) distribute across the different clause types. False ideas are discarded (e.g., there are no τίς relative clauses, ὅστις does not take over ὅς' functions). This essay furthermore teases apart actual neutralization and so-far-unknown subtle distinctions. Who knew that ὅστις is featured in three different types of appositive clauses? In the interrogative domain, an analysis is given of what licenses ὅς to pop in and τίς to pop out. Tackling these topics and more, this essay draws a coherent picture of the wh -clause system, whose basis is the notion of (non)identification.

La critique oulipienne, même si elle a déjà effectué des incursions notoires, reste encore assez embryonnaire. L'Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle, dont les activités ne cessent depuis 1960, l'année de sa fondation, constitue un laboratoire unique d'expérimentation en matière de poésie et de prose. Né du mariage des mathématiques et de la littérature, l'Oulipo s'est tôt saisi des ressources de l'informatique, dans le but de rechercher de nouvelles formes et structures à mettre à la disposition des écrivains. La complexité et le caractère parfois abstrus de ses textes-prototypes font que la critique tend à gloser sur la ou les contraintes qui génèrent le texte, au détriment du produit fini. The language of Ḫaṣāʾiṣ is reputed to be difficult to access, and the thought of its author relatively opaque. With this book, readers now have a key to penetrate the linguistic thought of one of the most important grammarians in the Arabic grammatical tradition. It shows how Ibn Ǧinnī used the concepts of the episteme of his time to systematize grammatical explanatory reasoning. On reading this book, the reader will also perceive the importance attached by Ibn Ǧinnī to the role played by the speaker in language change, in that the speaker is seen as the true agent (ʿāmil) of his discourse. This work also offers the reader a broader perspective on Ibn Ǧinnī's relationship with the grammatical tradition, as it shows, for example, that most of Ibn Ǧinnī's diachronic reflections are borrowed from one of Sībawayhi's forgotten disciples (180/796): al-Aḫfaš al-Awsaṭ (215/830).

Many assume the book of Revelation is merely an "anti-imperial" attack on the Roman Empire. Yet, Shane J. Wood argues this conclusion over-exaggerates Rome's significance and, thus, misses Revelation's true target-the construction of the alter-empire through the destruction of the preeminent adversary: Satan. Friendship : a central moral value /

Friendship was recognized as a central moral value in the classical period, but it was dismissed from medieval, modern, and twentieth century moral theories. This book argues that this dismissal is unjustifiable. The validity of this claim is established in four steps. First, it proposes the concept of moral paradigm. This concept enables us to explore the source of moral value and to provide a criterion for the evaluation of the adequacy of moral theory. Second, the book explains why medieval, modern and twentieth century moral theorists neglected friendship as a central moral value in their analysis of moral behavior and why this neglect was unjustifiable. Third, it explains why the classical moral philosophers viewed friendship as a central moral value. Fourth, it argues that friendship is an ontological need, therefore, a necessary condition of the moral life. This need is implicitly recognized in the moral paradigms that underlie the moral theories of the medieval, modern, and twentieth century moral theories. Accordingly it cannot be neglected in the process of moral theorizing.

Should depth psychology supplant aspects of tradition in readings of fragmented selves in African Literatures? Are other selves in pathological characters mere mishaps in memories or persons with ability to substitute the primary self? This book contends that fragmented selves in characters in stream of consciousness writing in Africa are representations of the spirit possession trope. The book adopts postulations of reputable scholars such as John Mbiti, Emma Cohen and Janice Boddy to examine spirit possession in selected works of African literature and Africanised churches with the aim of proposing it as a viable trope for the analysis of postcolonial literatures. While most literary criticism focuses on literary texts, this book extends the analysis to cases of exorcism in Africanized Pentecostal churches. This comparative reading attests to the major differences between depth psychology and spirit possession tropes in the analysis of stream of consciousness literatures. It is evident that spirit possession in the African context is not merely a pathological condition, but a desirable state that enables prophetic abilities, genius, success and beauty.
