Religion or halakha : the philosophy of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik /

: Joseph B. Soloveitchik's philosophy plays a significant role in twentieth century Jewish thought. This book focuses on the first stages of Soloveitchik's philosophy, through a systematic and detailed discussion of his essay Halakhic Man. Schwartz analyzes this essay at three main levels: first, he considers its complex writing style and relates it to Soloveitchik's aims in the writing of this work. Second, the author compares Halakhic Man to other contemporary writings of Soloveitchik. Third, he lays out the essay's philosophical background. Through this analysis, Schwartz successfully exposes hidden layers in Halakhic Man, which may not be immediately evident. This book is also available in paperback.

Paul's gospel in Romans : a discourse analysis of Rom. 1:16-8:39 /

: This book offers a fresh approach to Paul's gospel. Applying linguistic discourse analysis to Romans 1:16-8:39, it helps the reader to gain a comprehensive understanding of the argumentative structure and contents of the gospel of Paul. As well as revealing the two underlying descriptive frameworks that Paul uses to explain his gospel about God's salvation - the interactive framework between God and humans, and the 'two-realm' framework - this book demonstrates that Paul's gospel consists of one 'peak point' that shows the central role of Jesus, and two 'sub-peaks' elucidating salvation.

Political and cultural representations of Muslims : Islam in the plural /

: Relations between Muslims and non-Muslims have received unprecedented attention since 9/11. In many predominantly non-Muslim countries intense debates have focused on international relations with Muslim-majority states, but dilemmas of national policy and practice in incorporating domestic Muslim minorities have also provoked heated argument. Meanwhile, within predominantly Muslim societies, and within Muslim diasporas, relationships with non-Muslims have posed pressing questions about compatibility, antagonism or adaptation of beliefs, identities and customs. The essays forming this multidisciplinary collection analyse concerns arising from clashing perceptions of Muslims in the political and cultural spheres: the majority of chapters deal with non-Muslim representations of Muslims, but several chapters reverse the perspective by examining Muslims' own understandings of their relationships with non-Muslim societies. Contributors include: Ahmed K. al-Rawi, Ebru Ş. Canan-Sokullu, Tereza Capelos, Gaetan Clavien, Danila Genovese, Matteo Gianni, Signe Kjær Jørgensen, Priyasha Kaul, Chloe Patton, Timothy Peace, Mirjam Shatanawi, Dunya van Troost, and John Turner.

Media and Education : Addressing Racism in Norway /

: In Media and Education: Addressing Racism in Norway , we explore critical questions about Norway's hidden history of racism and its implications today. Why has Norway largely overlooked its role in the transatlantic slave trade? How do media representations shape public perceptions of race? What can education do to confront and dismantle systemic racism? This book uncovers the complex interplay between historical narratives, media portrayals, and educational practices, offering fresh insights into the ongoing struggle for racial justice in a diversifying society. We present rare archival images and previously unpublished data that challenge conventional understandings of Norwegian identity and history. Through compelling case studies-like the "Human Zoo" exhibition and the tragic death of Eugene Obiora-we engage you with powerful stories that highlight the lived realities of racism in Norway. You will witness how these histories resonate within contemporary antiracist movements and educational discourse. This timely work is essential for educators, policymakers, and anyone interested in understanding and addressing racial issues in Norway and beyond. Join us in sparking meaningful conversations and actions towards a more inclusive future.

Two paradigms for divine healing : Fred F. Bosworth, Kenneth E. Hagin, Agnes Sanford, and Francis MacNutt in dialogue /

: The doctrine and practice of healing through faith has been a hallmark of Pentecostalism since its inception and helps to account for the widespread appeal of the movement. While "divine healing," as it is called by insiders, has brought hope to the sick, it has also been a source of disenchantment and controversy. The present study offers a close look at the teaching of four major ministers of healing in the twentieth-century United States. The author distinguishes between the healing evangelists and pastoral ministers of healing who react to them. This book discusses in detail the merits of both schools and the author proposes a solution to the problems inherent in the two paradigms under scrutiny.

Handbook of Literary Criticism and Ethics /

: Storytelling has always occupied a central role in the configuration of self and world. However, the patterns of meaning it creates are often controversial, as they are metaphoric or holistic. The Handbook of Literary Criticism and Ethics provides a clear roadmap to understanding the changing ethical value attributed to Western literature from the ancient Greeks to the present. Readers will gain a nuanced apprehension of the evolution of literary forms, both alongside and against the dominant cultural paradigms. What ensues are critical reconfigurations of ethics and aesthetics.

Secessionist Entities and International Law : The South Caucasus Disputes between Self-Determination, Territorial Integrity, and the Quest for a European Engagement Policy /

: This book examines secessionist entities that arose during and after the dissolution process of the USSR and considers them as legal subjects in their own right. By employing a novel and more innovative approach, the agency of these subjects, otherwise often ignored or disregarded, is taken into account. Drawing on the cases of the South Caucasus, the author suggests going beyond the binary concept of statehood and traditional notions of sovereignty. He advocates embracing an inclusive reading of international law, which enables to foster creative ambiguity vis-à-vis these entities as means of conflict transformation.

Critiques : In Defence of Development /

: Critiques presented here in defence of development range across a number of issues, all of which are central to discussions about the desirability or undesirability of this historical process. These include one particular aspect - labour market competition - of the debate about racism, why the reproduction of this ideology is more acute at some historical conjunctures but not others, the same question that can also be asked of the industrial reserve. Equally contentious is the current dominance of populist and postmodern interpretations of rural development, in the misleading guise of new paradigms, the object of which is to exorcise two ghosts: not just development itself, but also Marxist theory about development. Visual Exemplars : Biblical Figures in the Art and Literature of Jewish Late Antiquity /

: Between the third to seventh centuries of the common era, Jewish communities throughout the Eastern Mediterranean began to adorn their synagogues with figural illustrations inspired by the Hebrew Bible. Although the Bible had long been the cornerstone of Jewish life, it was only in late antiquity that its patriarchs, prophets, and heroes entered the Jewish visual lexicon. Through careful consideration of the rich history of Jewish biblical interpretation alongside similar motifs in Near Eastern, Greco-Roman, and Christian visual culture, this book challenges the reader to consider the relationship between late antique Jewish biblical art, synagogue rituals, rabbinic teachings, and exemplary paradigms.

Driving Productivity : Automation, Labor, and Industrial Development in the United States and Germany /

: Driving Productivity reconstructs the industrial histories of the American and German automotive industries in a new light. From the Fordist assembly line to Japanese lean production and Industry 4.0, Anthony J. Knowles critically examines major technical developments within the historical dynamics of capitalism. Both countries face the pressure to automate, transform labor, and increase efficiency, yet their responses differ due to divergent paradigms of integrating business, labor, and government. Driving Productivity makes the case that improving productivity is a never-ending process that becomes a compulsory social imperative that industries must respond to but are nevertheless responded to differently between countries.

Shipwrecks, Legal Landscapes and Mediterranean Paradigms : Gone Under Sea /

: This book changes our understanding of the Roman conceptions about the sea by placing the focus on shipwrecks as events that act as bridges between the sea and the land. The study explores the different Roman legal definitions of these spaces, and how individuals of divergent legal statuses interacted within these areas. Its main purpose is to chart and analyse the Roman conception of the maritime landscape from the Late Republican until the Severan period. This book integrates maritime history and ethnography with the physical remains of past maritime systems, such as shipwrecks, ports, villages, fortifications, and documented legal rulings.
: This book challenges the Roman conceptions about the sea and maritime landscapes by placing the focus on shipwrecks as events that act as bridges between sea and land. It studies legal literature through the lens of the maritime cultural landscape theory.

Writing the wayward wife : rabbinic interpretations of sotah /

: Writing the Wayward Wife is a study of rabbinic interpretations of sotah, the law concerning the woman suspected of adultery (Numbers 5:11-31). The focus of the book is on interpretations of sotah in tannaitic and amoraic texts: the Mishnah, Tosefta, Midrash Halakhah, Midrash Aggadah, and the Palestinian and Babylonian Talmuds. The body of the work is in-depth analysis of the legal and ritual proceedings. Jewish Greek interpretations (Josephus, Philo, and LXX) also are addressed, along with the Protevangelium of James , and fragments from the Dead Sea Scrolls and Cairo Geniza. Finally, the disappearance of the ritual is discussed, with implications for the development of rabbinic authority. In previous secondary literature, the law of sotah has been understood as either proto-feminist or misogynist. This book argues that neither of these are appropriate paradigms. Rather, this book identifies the emergence of two major interpretive themes: the emphasis on legal procedures, and the condemnation of adultery.

Research in the Social Scientific Study of Religion, Volume 31 : A Diversity of Paradigms /

: Research in the Social Scientific Study of Religion, Volume 31: A Diversity of Paradigms showcases two approaches to the socio-scientific study of religion. It includes a special section within which authors draw on data collected about congregational life in the Australian National Church Life Surveys (from 1991 to present) These studies give voice to minority groups and children. While findings include the strengths of ethnic diversity and the positive experiences of young churchgoers, they also highlight that full inclusion in local church life is far from being realized. A second section explores the application of feminist approaches within the sociology of religion. In their struggle for equality for women, feminist scholars developed methodologies to challenge the marginality of any 'othered' group. This section showcases how use of these methods challenges hierarchies within knowledge.

The Ascetic Qur'an and Its Kharijite Readers /

: Research on Islamic asceticism frequently highlights practices and ideas described in premodern Islamic literature on renunciation ( zuhd ). This study redirects our attention to the Qur'an's ascetic dimension and its reception in the poems and sermons of the Kharijites, an early Islamic group known for extreme piety. It sheds light on the Qur'an's engagement with late antique ascetic ideas, notably regarding scriptural reading and recitation. In their reception of the Qur'an, the Kharijites developed practices of reading and recitation characterized by the interiorization and enactment of scripture. This book offers a new view of the religious culture of the first and early second centuries of Islam through the lens of an understudied group and its attempts to put the Qur'an into practice.

The Syntax and Semantics of Wh-Clauses in Classical Greek : Relatives, Interrogatives, Exclamatives /

: Adapting tools recently developed in general linguistics and dwelling on a solid corpus study, this book offers the first comprehensive view on Classical Greek wh -clauses since Monteil (1963) and scrutinizes how wh -items (ὅς, ὅστις, τίς) distribute across the different clause types. False ideas are discarded (e.g., there are no τίς relative clauses, ὅστις does not take over ὅς' functions). This essay furthermore teases apart actual neutralization and so-far-unknown subtle distinctions. Who knew that ὅστις is featured in three different types of appositive clauses? In the interrogative domain, an analysis is given of what licenses ὅς to pop in and τίς to pop out. Tackling these topics and more, this essay draws a coherent picture of the wh -clause system, whose basis is the notion of (non)identification.

A Local history of Greek polytheism : gods, people, and the land of Aigina, 800-400 bce /

: This book provides the first comprehensive and detailed study of the deities and cults of the important Greek island-state of Aigina from the Geometric to Classical periods (800-400 BCE). It rests on a thorough first-hand reconsideration of the archaeological, epigraphic and literary evidence. The development of the local cults is reconstructed, along with their interrelationships and how they responded to the social needs of the Aiginetans. Revising other recent models of interpretation, the author proposes a distinctive approach, informed by anthropology and social theory, to the study of the religious life of the ancient Greeks. On this basis, she uses the case of Aigina to explore fundamental issues such as the nature and variety of local religious worlds and their relationship to the panhellenic concepts and practices of Greek religion.
