In Islamic Leadership in the European Lands of the Former Ottoman and Russian Empires the history and contemporary development of Islamic leadership in over a dozen of Eastern European countries is analysed. The studies are presented through a double prism: the institutional structures of the Muslim communities and the place of the muftiates in the current national constellations on one hand, and the dimension of the spiritual guidance emanating from the muftiates on the other. The latter includes aspects such as the muftiates' powers and role in supervision of mosques and other religious institutions, production, dissemination and control of religious knowledge and discussions on traditional and non-traditional forms of Islam engaged in by the muftiates. From the constructive-engagement vantage point of doing philosophy of language comparatively, this anthology explores (1) how reflective elaboration of some distinct features of the Chinese language and of philosophically interesting resources concerning language in Chinese philosophy can contribute to our treatment of a range of issues in philosophy of language and (2) how relevant resources in contemporary philosophy of language can contribute to philosophical interpretations of reflectively interesting resources concerning the Chinese language and Chinese texts. This book explores how language is used to create division and discrimination in diverse European societies by emphasizing differences in ethnicity, race, national identity, beliefs, or appearance. This book analyses the rise of a Latin American Catholic identity during the mid- to late nineteenth century. It starts with the founding of the first Latin American institution in history, the Pio Latin American College in Rome, and then moves on to a series of collective initiatives such as the Latin American Plenary Council in 1899. Moreover, these initiatives cannot be explained without taking into account two parallel processes: the internationalisation of the various Latin American churches and their orientation towards Rome. In just half a century, a transnational ultramontane culture had been developed and consolidated, which would make this Catholic periphery one of the most dynamic centres of contemporary Catholicism.
