David the Invincible, commentary on Aristotle's Prior analytics : critical Old Armenian text /

David the Invincible's (6th century AD) Commentary on Aristotle's Prior Analytics survives only in an old Armenian translation from Greek. Its critical edition with a Russian translation (1967) was based on the editio princeps of Venice (1833) and five manuscripts of the Matenadaran (Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, Erevan). This edition includes the text of 1967, revised through careful rechecking of the same five manuscripts and the editio princeps, as well as on the basis of twenty-three other manuscripts. The book contains the first English translation of the work, textual parallels with other commentaries on Aristotle, trilingual (Armenian, Greek, English) glossaries and other material useful to interested specialists. The introduction, among other subjects, discusses the disputable issues of authorship and the translator.

Eugnostos and The Sophia of Jesus Christ (SJC) are two closely related tractates from the Nag Hammadi Coptic Gnostic Library and Papyrus Berolinensis 8502 (only SJC ). Here they are presented parallel with each other because they are literarily related, i.e. most of Eugnostos is also found in SJC . Eugnostos is printed in its two Coptic copies (too close to be versions), plus the fragmentary remains of a Greek copy (all with translations). This the first publication of the edited text of Eugnostos from Nag Hammadi Codex V and the first time that all these texts have been presented in one volume. Eugnostos is a non-Christian speculative cosmogony that begins with the primal invisible One, moves on to the structuring of the invisible and visible aeons and concludes at the point where the creation of this world would occur. SJC is a revelation discourse of Christ with his disciples which makes use of the bulk of Eugnostos , and adds new emphases: e.g. the special role of Christ as revealer and savior, the imprisonment of the divine element in flesh, opposition in sexual intercourse, and the commissioning of the disciples. While Eugnostos lacks essential elements of the gnostic world-view, SJC is unquestionably gnostic. If one assumes the priority of Eugnostos , these tractates provide the clearest textual evidence available of a non-gnostic and non-Christian speculative system being transformed into a system that is both gnostic and Christian. Based mainly on understudied Arabic manuscript sources describing the learned salons of the Mamluk Sultan al-Ghawrī, In the Sultan's Salon presents the first theoretical conceptualization of the term "court" that can be fruitfully applied to premodern Islamic societies. It uses this conceptualization to demonstrate that al-Ghawrī's court functioned as a transregionally interconnected center of dynamic intellectual exchange, theological debate, and performance of rule that triggered novel developments in Islamic scholarly, religious, and political culture.

This publication is a synthesis of research on the royal statuarv of the Nineteenth Dynasty. It accompanies the catalogue of these statues that appeared on line in 2019.The present volume contains the results of observations on the royal statues, which are presented by type. The first chapter presents the statues by reign and by the types of statues within each reign, including statues reused by kings of the Nineteenth Dynasty as well as ones attributed to them.The succeeding chapters follow the evolution of statue types alongside the development of costume, coiffure and attributes. The frequency of these features in group statues and in two dimensional representations as well as their parallels in ritual scenes are also studied. The investigation defines the position of each type of statue in the temple and ends with an attempt to understand the rote of each statue type within the temple furniture. The next chapters deal with provenances, dimensions, materials, and techniques of the statues, followed by those on the accessories, and finally the style and the iconography are discussed, accompanied by comments on dating criteria. In Architecture and Asceticism Loosley Leeming presents the first interdisciplinary exploration of Late Antique Syrian-Georgian relations available in English. Taking the Georgian belief that 'Thirteen Syrian Fathers' introduced monasticism to the country in the sixth century as a starting point, this volume explores the evidence for trade, cultural and religious relations between Syria and the Kingdom of Kartli (what is now eastern Georgia) between the fourth and seventh centuries CE.
