This collection of essays honors James C. VanderKam on the occasion of his sixty-fifth birthday and twentieth year on the faculty of the University of Notre Dame. An international group of scholars-including peers specializing in Second Temple Judaism and Biblical Studies, colleagues past and present, and former students-offers essays that interact in various ways with ideas and themes important in VanderKam's own work. The collection is divided into five sections spanning two volumes. The first volume includes essays on the Hebrew Bible and ancient Near East along with studies on Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Essays in the second volume address topics in early Judaism, Enoch traditions and Jubilees , and the New Testament and early Christianity.

Plotinus and the Moving Image offers the first philosophical discussion on Plotinus' philosophy and film. It discusses Plotinian concepts like \'the One\' in a cinematic context and relates Plotinus' theory of time as a transitory intelligible movement of the soul to Bergson's and Deleuze's time-image. Film is a unique medium for a rapprochement of our modern consciousness with the thought of Plotinus. The Neoplatonic vestige is particularly worth exploring in the context of the newly emerging "Cinema of Contemplation." Plotinus' search for the \'intelligible\' that can be grasped neither by sense perception nor by merely logical abstractions leads to a fluent way of seeing. The 13 papers comprising this volume represent the fruits of the first Orion Center Symposium devoted to the comparison of the Dead Sea and early Christian texts. The authors reject the older paradigm which configured the similarities between Qumran and early Christian literature as evidence of "influence" from one upon the other. They raise fresh methodological possibilities by asking how insights from each of these two corpora illuminate the other, and by considering them as parallel evidence for broader currents of Second Temple Judaism. Topics addressed include specific exegetical and legal comparisons; prophecy, demonology, and messianism; the development of canon and the rise of commentary; and possible connections between the Gospel of John and the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Beyond the Andes : The Ultramontane Origins of a Latin American Church (1851-1910) /

This book analyses the rise of a Latin American Catholic identity during the mid- to late nineteenth century. It starts with the founding of the first Latin American institution in history, the Pio Latin American College in Rome, and then moves on to a series of collective initiatives such as the Latin American Plenary Council in 1899. Moreover, these initiatives cannot be explained without taking into account two parallel processes: the internationalisation of the various Latin American churches and their orientation towards Rome. In just half a century, a transnational ultramontane culture had been developed and consolidated, which would make this Catholic periphery one of the most dynamic centres of contemporary Catholicism.
