A special focus is the documentation of ancient, medieval, and early modern sources and textual parallels (similia). Orphic gold tables are key documents for the knowledge of rites and beliefs of Orphics, an atypical group that configured a highly original creed and that influenced powerfully over other Greek writers and thinkers. The recent discovery of some tablets has forced a noteworthy modification of some points of view and a review ofthe different hypothesis proposed about them. The book presents a complete edition of the texts, their translation and some fundamental keys for their interpretation, in an attempt at updating our current knowledge on Orphic ideas about the soul and the Afterlife stated in those texts. The work is improved with an appendix of iconographic annotations in which some plastic representations in drawings are reproduced related to the universe of tablets, selected and commented on by Ricardo Olmos.

Egyptianizing figurines from Delos : a study in Hellenistic religion /
:
This book investigates Hellenistic popular religion through an interdisciplinary study of terracotta figurines of Egyptian deities, mostly from domestic contexts, from the trading port of Delos. A comparison of the figurines' iconography to parallels in Egyptian religious texts, temple reliefs, and ritual objects suggests that many figurines depict deities or rituals associated with Egyptian festivals. An analysis of the objects' clay fabrics and manufacturing techniques indicates that most were made on Delos. Additionally, archival research on unpublished notes from early excavations reveals new data on many figurines' archaeological contexts, illuminating their roles in both domestic and temple cults. The results offer a new perspective on Hellenistic reinterpretations of Egyptian religion, as well as the relationship between "popular" and "official" cults.

"Cet ouvrage constitue la synthèse de la recherche sur la statuaire royale de la XIXe dynastie dont le catalogue a paru en ligne en 2018. Le présent volume regroupe les résultats des observations sur les statues réparties par types. Un premier chapitre expose le nombre de statues par règne et la fréquence des types auxquels elles correspondent, y compris les statues remployées sous la XIXe dynastie et celles qui lui sont attribuées. Les chapitres suivants condensent l'évolution des types de statues en suivant celle de leurs costumes, coiffures et attributs, leur fréquence dans les groupes statuaires, mais aussi des représentations en deux dimensions de ces statues et leurs parallèles dans des scènes rituelles. L'examen mené permet d'établir la place qu'occupe chaque type de statue dans un temple et donne lieu à un essai d'interprétation de sa fonction dans l'ensemble du mobilier du temple. This publication is a synthesis of research on the royal statuarv of the Nineteenth Dynasty. It accompanies the catalogue of these statues that appeared on line in 2019.The present volume contains the results of observations on the royal statues, which are presented by type. The first chapter presents the statues by reign and by the types of statues within each reign, including statues reused by kings of the Nineteenth Dynasty as well as ones attributed to them.The succeeding chapters follow the evolution of statue types alongside the development of costume, coiffure and attributes. The frequency of these features in group statues and in two dimensional representations as well as their parallels in ritual scenes are also studied. The investigation defines the position of each type of statue in the temple and ends with an attempt to understand the rote of each statue type within the temple furniture. The next chapters deal with provenances, dimensions, materials, and techniques of the statues, followed by those on the accessories, and finally the style and the iconography are discussed, accompanied by comments on dating criteria. This study aims at furthering our understanding of the early Jewish sapiential composition 4QInstruction which was found in fragmentary manuscripts at Qumran. The first part focuses on the reading and joining of the fragments, and gives an approximate reconstruction of the manuscripts and the composition. The second part discusses some disputed sections and themes in more detail, especially the beginning of the composition (4Q416 1), its relation to the Community Rule and the Hodayot, alleged sacerdotal fragments (4Q415 1 ii-2 I and 4Q418 81), as well as fragments describing fate after death (4Q418 55 and 69 ii). The first part is intended as a supplement to the official DJD edition, whereas the second part is of a more general interest.

Following on from the author's Ancient Topography of Eastern Phokis (1986) and Topography and Population of Ancient Boiotia (1988) this monograph completes his studies of settlement in antiquity of Eastern Central Greece (excluding Attike and Megaris). The structure of the book is exactly the same as the parallel work on Eastern Phokis: an account of the physical geography (and natural economy) of the area is followed by a detailed catalogue of 22 sites in which location, bibliography, and structural remains are discussed, surface finds and inscriptions are listed, and the possible identifications with ancient names are elaborated; after these presentations of the raw data, analytical sections on settlement development and organisation, on fortifications, and on cults follow. Several appendices treat of connex subjects or list various testimonia, ancient and modern, and the work concludes with indices of ancient texts, placenames and general subjects. See Less
