This volume contains a critical edition of Ovid's epistle of Medea to Jason, together with the fragments of his lost tragedy Medea , including testimonia . Introduction and commentary deal with matters of language, realia , textual, authenticity, and literary criticism. An examination of the arguments recently put forward against the authenticity of the 12th letter yielded that it cannot be denied Ovidian authorship. Numerous parallels illustrate in particular Ovid's handling of his literary antecedents, notably Euripides and Apollonios. Intensive discussions are also given to questions of genre, epistolary form, influence of elegy and rhetoric, the letter's structure and its position in the collection. The appendix offers a convenient critical summary of the research on Ovid's Medea , together with an extensive commentary on the two fragments.

Socrates and the Socratic Dialogue assembles the most complete range of studies on Socrates and the Socratic dialogue. It focuses on portrayals of Socrates, whether as historical figure or protagonist of 'Socratic dialogues', in extant and fragmentary texts from Classical Athens through Late Antiquity. Special attention is paid to the evolving power and texture of the Socratic icon as it adopted old and new uses in philosophy, biography, oratory, and literature. The studies in this volume examine the intersection of the Dead Sea Scrolls with early rabbinic literature. This is a particularly rich area for comparative study, which has not heretofore received sufficient scholarly attention. While some of the contributions in this volume focus on specific comparative case studies, others address far-reaching issues of historical and comparative methodology. Particular attention is paid to questions of the nature of sectarian and rabbinic law, and how each may elucidate the other. These studies model the directions that need to be pursued in future scholarship on the lines of continuity and discontinuity that connect and differentiate these two literary corpora and their respective religious cultures and social structures.

The Ancient Topography of Opountian Lokris /

Following on from the author's Ancient Topography of Eastern Phokis (1986) and Topography and Population of Ancient Boiotia (1988) this monograph completes his studies of settlement in antiquity of Eastern Central Greece (excluding Attike and Megaris). The structure of the book is exactly the same as the parallel work on Eastern Phokis: an account of the physical geography (and natural economy) of the area is followed by a detailed catalogue of 22 sites in which location, bibliography, and structural remains are discussed, surface finds and inscriptions are listed, and the possible identifications with ancient names are elaborated; after these presentations of the raw data, analytical sections on settlement development and organisation, on fortifications, and on cults follow. Several appendices treat of connex subjects or list various testimonia, ancient and modern, and the work concludes with indices of ancient texts, placenames and general subjects. See Less

A Late Middle Kingdom Temple Bakery at South Abydos /
:
Recent excavations have exposed the original bakery belonging to the mortuary temple of Senwosret III at South Abydos. Initially founded as a six-chambered building, the bakery was expanded in several phases to become a larger complex that housed a series of chambers dedicated primarily to large-volume hearth baking. Associated ceramics show that baking practices involved parallel use of rough-ware trays (aprt) and cylindrical bread molds (bDA). The bakery was linked by a walkway system with adjacent buildings also involved in the production and supply of offerings to the temple. One of the neighboring buildings appears to have been a companion brewery that was removed and replaced during a phase of alteration to the production area. The bakery and related structures are components of a larger shena or production zone that once extended nearly 300 meters along the edge of the Nile floodplain between the temple and town at the site of WAH-swt-¢akAwra-mAa-xrw-m-AbDw. Evidence from the bakery and neighboring structures shows that the layout of the shena was an extension of the urban plan of the town of Wah-Sut. Flanked by the main institutional buildings, the site was spatially organized around this multi-activity production zone which formed the site’s economic and industrial nucleus.
