The Temple scroll and the Bible : the methodology of 11QT /

That the Temple Scroll is re-written Torah is recognised, but discussion of how the Torah is used has been hampered by absence of detailed analysis of the Scroll. This volume addresses this lack by careful examination of major portions of the Scroll. Representative portions of each division of the Scroll are analyzed, first to establish precisely which biblical texts are used, and then to show how these texts are placed in relation to each other. From this study, a specific editorial methodology is uncovered. The final chapter summarises the conclusions and discusses implications for wider Qumran studies. This book provides data essential not only to further the discussion on the exegetical methodology of this Scroll, but also for insight into the transition from "inner-biblical" exegesis to rabbinic commentary.

Ancient Latin Epics in Girolamo Vida's Christiad /

The Christiad (1535) is a Neo-Latin epic by the Italian Renaissance writer Girolamo Vida, based on the Gospels and written at the behest of Pope Leo X. Long seen as a Christian Aeneid, it emerges in this study as a far more complex work, demonstrating that while Virgil remains the main model, Vida also engages deeply with Lucretius, Ovid, Lucan, Silius Italicus, and Statius. By examining Vida's imitative techniques and integration of multiple epic models, this monograph reassesses the Christiad 's relationship with the ancient Latin epic tradition. In doing so, it sheds new light on the afterlife of these classical poems as print made them more widely available.

Most cultures have myths of origin. The Babylonians were the first to combine blocks of traditions about primeval time into primeval histories where humans had a central role. In the first millennium there were different versions that influenced the concepts of primeval history within Jewish religion, both in the Bible and in the parallel Enochic tradition. Atrahasis and the traditions of primeval dynasties had crucial impact on Genesis; the traditions of the primeval apkallus as cosmic guardians were lying behind the Enochic Watcher Story. The book offers a comprehensive analytic comparison between the images of primeval time in these three traditions. It presents new interpretations of each of these traditions and how they relate to each other.

The theme of this study is the Doxography of problems in physics from the Presocratics to the early first century BCE attributed to Aëtius. Part I focuses on the argument of the compendium as a whole, of its books, of its sequences of chapters, and of individual chapters, against the background of Peripatetic and Stoic methodology. Part II offers the first full reconstruction in a single unified text of Book II, which deals with the cosmos and the heavenly bodies. It is based on extensive analysis of the relevant witnesses and includes listings of numerous doxographical-dialectical parallels in other ancient writings. This new treatment of the evidence supersedes Diels' still dominant source-critical approach, and will prove indispensable for scholars in ancient philosophy.

Prof. Dr. Hans-Martin Schenke, internationally renowned New Testament scholar and pioneer researcher in Gnosticism as it became brilliantly illuminated by the publication of the Nag Hammadi Codices, organized a small group of students and colleagues in "East Berlin" in the early 1970s to investigate the difficult new primary sources from the "Coptic Gnostic Library" discovered in Upper Egypt in 1945. Collectively, we discover a pattern of uniquely symmetrical relations between Jews and their host culture. Unlike in the Christian and Islamic countries, Jews were always honored and treated in India like respected guests. We all come to know ourselves through our reflections in the eyes of others, and rather than hostility and a condescending attitude, in India, Jews always enjoyed respect, hospitality, and affection. These chapters seek to answer the theoretical question as to what Jews and Judaism looked like when viewed with a 'good eye'. Conversely, we also learn how the world sees Jews who have always enjoyed respect and were made welcome. The first section of the book analyzes Jewish communities in Kochi, especially, but also the Bene Israelis and Baghdadis. The so-called Genesis Apocryphon (1Q20) from Qumran Cave 1 has suffered from decades of neglect, due in large part to its poor state of preservation. As part of a resurgent scholarly interest in the Apocryphon, and its prominent position among the Aramaic Dead Sea Scrolls, this volume presents a fresh transcription, translation, and exstenive textual notes drawing on close study of the original manuscript, all available photographs, and previous publications. In addition, a detailed analysis of columns 13-15 and their relation to the oft-cited parallel in the Book of Jubilees reveals a number of ways in which the two works differ, thereby highlighting several distinctive features of the Genesis Apocryphon. The result is a reliable text edition and a fuller understanding of the message conveyed by this fragmentary but fascinating retelling of Genesis.

Atonement and the Logic of Resurrection in the Epistle to the Hebrew s

Scholars often explain Hebrews' relative silence regarding Jesus' resurrection by emphasizing the author's appeal to Yom Kippur's two key moments-the sacrificial slaughter and the high priest's presentation of blood in the holy of holies-in his distinctive portrayal of Jesus' death and heavenly exaltation. The writer's depiction of Jesus as the high priest whose blood effected ultimate atonement appears to be modeled upon these two moments. Such a typology discourages discrete reflection on Jesus' resurrection. Drawing on contemporary studies of Jewish sacrifice (which note that blood represents life, not death), parallels in Jewish apocalyptic literature, and fresh exegetical insights, this volume demonstrates that Jesus' embodied, resurrected life is crucial for the high-priestly Christology and sacrificial soteriology developed in Hebrews.

Scholarly researches on the virgin birth have often focussed rather narrowly on the theological and historical difficulties it tends to raise. The Nag Hammadi Apocalypse of Adam, however, provides for the first time a glimpse into the wider background of ideas and myths to which it belonged. Prophecies there concerning a universal 'Illuminator' mention his birth 'from a virgin womb'. Several of the stories, drawn from Iranian and other sources , also appear in apocalyptic and testamental literature contemporary with Christian origins. The book centrally analyses a body of extraordinarily detailed narrative parallels between a cluster of stories in the Apocalypse and the infancy narratives of Mt. 1-2, concluding that these stories serve to identify Jesus as the True Prophet who is the fulfilment of history - though not as Son of God. The question of Mt.'s special tradition and its relation to Lk. is also cast in a new light.
