This collection of essays honors James C. VanderKam on the occasion of his sixty-fifth birthday and twentieth year on the faculty of the University of Notre Dame. An international group of scholars-including peers specializing in Second Temple Judaism and Biblical Studies, colleagues past and present, and former students-offers essays that interact in various ways with ideas and themes important in VanderKam's own work. The collection is divided into five sections spanning two volumes. The first volume includes essays on the Hebrew Bible and ancient Near East along with studies on Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Essays in the second volume address topics in early Judaism, Enoch traditions and Jubilees , and the New Testament and early Christianity.

The collected biblical writings of T.C. Skeat /

A high proportion of the many articles published by the papyrologist T.C. Skeat (1907-2003), a former Keeper of Manuscripts at the British Museum, concerns the New Testament. This present collection gathers together papers on Biblical and related matters contributed by Skeat for over sixty years to various publications. The book divides these into three sections: ancient book production, studies on particular Biblical manuscripts and textual criticism. In his Introduction J.K. Elliott assesses the importance of Skeat's work and he incorporates from personal correspondence some of Skeat's later thinking on these topics. A full Bibliography of Skeat's writings is included.

Julius Kovesi's Moral Notions (1967) was a startlingly original contribution to moral philosophy and theory of meaning. After initial positive reviews Kovesi's book was largely forgotten. Nevertheless, it continued to have an enduring influence on a number of philosophers and theologians some of whom have contributed to this volume. The original essays collected here critique, analyze, deepen and extend the work of Kovesi. The book will be of particular interest to moral philosophers and those working on concept formation, while also having a broader appeal to social scientists grappling with the description/evaluation problem.

This volume is a collection of essays, written by authorities in the field, on many aspects of ancient rhetoric. These essays deal both with the theory of rhetoric and the practice of oratory and are quite diverse both in tone and audience envisioned. Practice Interpretation takes the everyday social conditions of people as they are described in the Bible and looks at emerging issues that confront interpreters in daily life. The latest volume in the Practice Interpretation series deals with a much-neglected but fascinating part of the Bible, the book of Leviticus. The book opens with an introduction by J.W. Rogerson. Philip Davies attempts to uncover the main theme of Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, concluding that the portrait of the ideal Israel in each gives the perspective respectively of a priest, a military commander and a lawyer. In his second essay he explores the enigmatic figure of Azazel in the atonement ritual of Leviticus 16. What parallels are there with the New Testament account of the Passion of Jesus?
