Two allegorical ancient Greek stories about a young hero's career- defining choice are shown in this book to have later been appropriated to radically differing effects. E.g. a male's choice between female personifications can morph into a female's choice between the same, or between various male personifications. Never before have so many instances of this process from art, literature, music, even landscape gardening, been culled. Illustrations, mainly colour, many brought into this context for the first time, are conveniently incorporated into the text, thus mimetically mirroring a central theme of the book, the process of 'visualising the verbal, verbalising the visual.'

This edition comprises the first two books of the natural philosophy section of a unique teacher's manual on Avicenna's philosophy, authored by his second-generation student Abū 'l-ʿAbbās al-Lawkarī (d. after 503/1109). Al-Lawkarī was the person responsible for promoting Avicenna's philosophy in Khorasan at a time when theologians like Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (d. 505/1111) condemned its most fundamental tenets. The importance of this work lies in al-Lawkarī's endeavour to provide the resources for a condensed yet comprehensive lecture course on Avicenna's philosophy, with the aim of perpetuating his ideas. His covert use of the work of his teacher Bahmanyār (d. 458/1066) is especially noteworthy, here as well as in other sections of this work.

"The 12th International Conference for Nubian Studies was held at the British Museum, London, from 1st-6th August 2010. The conference, held every four years, is the only international gathering of archaeologists and scholars from associated disciplines which considers all aspects of Sudan and southern Egypt's ancient and more recent past. The main sessions, and main papers published herein, were devoted to a consideration of the Merowe Dam Archaeological Salvage Project, its aftermath and impact. Over the previous decade this has been the major focus of archaeological activity on the Middle Nile. The dam is now complete and the reservoir is full drawing a line under the fieldwork component of the project. It was felt timely, therefore, in the interim to obtain an overview of what was found during the many years of intensive work and the first main paper speaker in each session sought to do just that. They were followed by reports on sites, categories of objects and more thematic papers arranged broadly by period. These highlight that, while the focus of archaeological activity still remains the Nile Valley where there is the densest concentration of sites and also where there remains the most concentrated threat to their survival, much work is being undertaken away from the river and in some cases outside its catchment area. When the tenth-century Kāmil as-sinā'a (or al-Kitāb al-malakī ) of 'Alī ibn al-'Abbās al-Mağūsī was adapted for a Latin-reading audience by Constantine the African in the late eleventh century, the medieval West had, for the first time, the opportunity to use a text which covered the whole of medicine. But the 100-odd extant manuscripts suggest that Contantine's Pantegni was put together over a considerable period of time, and chapters from other Latin and newly-translated Arabic medical works were added to or substituted those of the Kāmil . This book is the first to be devoted to Constantine the African: it sheds light on the School of Salerno and the formation of a medical corpus in the High Middle Ages.
