Emperors and historiography : collected essays on the literature of the Roman Empire by Daniël den Hengst /
:
In this collection of essays Roman historical and biographical texts are studied from a literary point of view. The main interest of the author, Daniël den Hengst, professor emeritus of Latin at the University of Amsterdam, concerns the development of Roman historiography, the ways in which Roman historians present their work and the intertextual relations between these works and other literary genres. Special attention is given to the Historia Augusta and Ammianus Marcellinus, but also authors from the classical period, such as Cicero, Livy and Suetonius and their ideas about historiography are discussed. The articles demonstrate that a detailed interpretation of these texts in the original language is indispensable to understanding the aims and methods of ancient historians and biographers.

Democritus : science, the arts, and the care of the soul : proceedings of the International Colloquium on Democritus, Paris, 18-20 September 2003 /
:
This volume gathers the papers presented at an International Colloquium held in Paris in 2003, and offers new contributions and new interpretative suggestions about both canonical and relatively neglected research areas on Democritus, including ethics, physics and epistemology, as well as musical and literary criticism, technics, zoology, and the catalogue of works. Specific contributions are furthermore devoted to Democritus' posterity and the problem of sources. The book also offers a detailed bibliography and several indices, which render it an up-to-date and stimulating tool for contemporary research on Democritus and atomism. Essays by: A. Brancacci, L. Gemelli, A. Jaulin, W. Leszl, J. Mansfeld, P.-M. Morel, D. O'Brien, L. Perilli, J. Salem, C.C.W. Taylor, J. Warren.

Quinti Septimi Florentis Tertulliani De anima /
:
The 'Supplements to Vigiliae Christianae' series was launched in 1987 with the publication of Tertullianus, De Idololatria , a critical text with translation and commentary by J.H. Waszink and J.C.M. van Winden (partly based on a manuscript left behind by P.G. van der Nat). It seems appropriate, therefore, that the 100th volume to appear in the 'Supplements to Vigiliae Christianae' series should be an updated reprint of J.H. Waszink's monumental and authoritative edition of Tertullian's De Anima . This volume contains the complete contents of the first edition, to which we have added a brief overview of J.H. Waszink's scholarly career, an English translation of the greater part of the introduction to his German translation of De Anima of 1980 and a list of corrections authorized by him.

The Patristic Text in the Confessional Age (16th-17th centuries) : Erudition, Theology, Censorship /
:
This volume follows the paradoxical trajectory of patristic studies in early modern Europe, from their full confessionalization in the mid-16th century to the emergence of 'fringe patristics' within minority groups in the early 18th century. The appeal to the Fathers, which was meant to buttress established orthodoxies, powerfully contributed to their dissolution in the internal strifes of 17th-century churches, especially on grace and predestination. An ample English introduction, with very rich notes, surveys the flourishing field of patristic reception and advocates for a historical, rather than theological or literary, approach.

Petrus de Alvernia, Sententia super librum 'De vegetabilibus et plantis' /
:
This volume is the first edition of Petrus de Alvernia's Sententia super librum 'De vegetabilibus et plantis' . The treatise 'De vegetabilibus et plantis', which goes back to the Peripatetic Nicolaus of Damascus and has an interesting tradition (from Greek into Syrian, from Syrian into Arabic, from Arabic into Latin), was considered to be a work of Aristotle's and was among the subjects prescribed for study in the Facultas Artium in Paris. Petrus de Alvernia's Sententia should primarily be regarded as an exposition of this often problematic work for the students of this faculty. The Introduction discusses the tradition of 'De vegetabilibus et plantis', the authenticity of the ascription of the commentary to Petrus de Alvernia, the characteristiscs of the commentary, and its relation to the commentary by Albertus Magnus. The Text is followed by indices nominum, locorum, plantarum, and verborum potiorum.
