This Festschrift honors the life and work of John D. Turner (Charles J. Mach University Professor of Classics and History at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln) on the occasion of his 75th birthday. Professor Turner's work has been of profound importance for the study of the interaction between Greek philosophy and Gnosticism in late antiquity. This volume contains essays by international scholars on a broad range of topics that deal with Sethian, Valentinian and other early Christian thought, as well as with Platonism and Neoplatonism, and offer a variety of perspectives spanning intellectual history, Greek and Coptic philology, and the study of religions.

La question d'une disparition potentielle du yiddish est déclinée dans des œuvres littéraires, des témoignages, et des enquêtes psychanalytiques en une multitude d'autres langues. Les études réunies dans ce volume définissent la confusion linguistique qui en résulte comme un symptôme de ce traumatisme historique, mêlant singulièrement résonances intimes et expériences collectives. Elles illustrent la nécessité de repenser la question des interactions entre les langues, comme un moment essentiel de prise en compte des tragédies historiques et une étape productive vers une compréhension plus nuancée des notions de multiculturalisme et de plurilinguisme, caractéristiques essentielles de notre époque. "Please show me / Where the language will go down", the Yiddish poet Avrom Sutzkever anxiously asked. Questions surrounding the potential disappearance of Yiddish resonate far and wide, in literary works, personal testimonies, social dynamics, and psychoanalytical inquiries in a range of other languages. First published in 2003 this is a new edition of a work that remains the only study of the nave platform known as the Syrian Bema to utilise an interdisciplinary approach. By combining archaeological and architectural research with a study of the Syriac Liturgy to explore how worship evolved on the Syrian Limestone Massif in Late Antiquity, this volume proposes a solution to the long debated question of why only approximately 50 of these bemata have been discovered amongst many thousands of late antique churches in Syria. It charts the evolution of the early liturgy in Syria and seeks to explain how the location of the Limestone Massif in the hinterland of Antioch may have affected the development of worship in the region.

En partant de La structure du comportement , et par l'intermédiaire notamment des travaux de Goldstein, l'étude situe le contexte dans lequel le langage apparaît comme thème majeur dans la pensée de Merleau-Ponty au sein d'un débat sur le vivant qui remonte à la philosophie kantienne. Sont réexaminées alors l'influence de la phénoménologie allemande sur Merleau-Ponty, ainsi que sa réflexion sur la littérature, la linguistique, et l'art, en s'appuyant aussi bien sur des écrits publiés que sur des textes inédits. In Silence et langage Stephen A. Noble offers a new interpretation of the development of Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology which analyses the central position of language within a philosophy of perception predicated upon the interdependence of seeing and speaking. Beginning with The Structure of Behaviour , and particularly through the work of Goldstein, the study situates the context in which language appears as a dominant theme in Merleau-Ponty's thought within a philosophical debate concerning the living organism which can be traced back to the writings of Kant.
