Egypt at its origins 6 : proceedings of the Sixth International Conference "Origin of the state...

This volume represents the 6th installment of proceedings of the successful international conference series "Origin of the State. Predynastic and Early Dynastic Egypt", which this time was held at the University of Vienna in Austria from 10th to 15th of September 2017. With this new peer-reviewed volume of focused research on early Egypt, the 41 contributors dedicated their research to various questions surrounding prehistoric Egypt, the emergence of Pharaonic civilization and the territorial state. While some papers present new archaeological results from on-going excavations, others involve the analysis and interpretation of previously known evidence from the different regions along the Nile Valley. A large group of papers specifically discuss the area of ancient Memphis, which was also a central theme of the conference helping to summarize 20 years of research at the archaeological site of Helwan. Following the good tradition of previous Origins conferences, a very large number of papers are dedicated to the area of Lower Egypt and the Nile Delta from early prehistoric through to the early Old Kingdom periods. These papers highlight the significance and enormous progress of archaeological fieldwork in an area that was long considered an uninhabitable swampland in prehistoric times. Other papers report on new fieldwork at different sites in a largely unexplored region of the Egyptian Nile Valley - the Eastern Desert of Middle Egypt, where active mining on a very large scale has taken place raising questions about the organization and scale of such activities during the formative periods of Egyptian civilization. There are numerous contributions on archaeological evidence from sites in Upper Egypt and their material culture, many of which having been excavated long ago but offering the opportunity to raise new questions.

Exalted Spirits: The Veneration of the Dead in Egypt through the Ages

The exhibition was opened on the 9th of November, 2021 at The Egyptian Museum in Cairo and was followed by a three-day conference from the 10th to the 12th of November, 2021. This three-day conference, in partnership with The American University in Cairo (AUC) and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MoTA), covered the veneration of deceased figures in Egypt from the Pharaonic period up to current times, using the diverse evidence available in terms of texts, images, and lived traditions. The conference featured academic papers as well as panel discussions focusing on current practises related to the veneration of the dead and their origins, which may be traced back to ancient Egypt, and was aimed at both academic and non-academic participants. Egyptologist Jack A. Josephson, a writer and researcher in the tradition of the "gentleman scholar," has achieved broad recognition as an authority in Egyptian art history. His lucid investigative analyses have probed and redefined the limits of inquiry, expanded research parameters, and broadened perspectives, emphasizing the undeniable contributions of art history in an intra-disciplinary framework. This volume of collected essays is dedicated to Josephson by distinguished friends and colleagues, a select roster including eminent, established scholars in the field of Egyptology and rising stars of the younger generation. Shifting social imaginaries in the Hellenistic period : narrations, practices, and images /

There is a long tradition in classical scholarship of reducing the Hellenistic period to the spreading of Greek language and culture far beyond the borders of the Mediterranean. More than anything else this perception has hindered an appreciation of the manifold consequences triggered by the creation of new spaces of connectivity linking different cultures and societies in parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. In adopting a new approach this volume explores the effects of the continuous adaptations of ideas and practices to new contexts of meaning on the social imaginaries of the parties participating in these intercultural encounters. The essays show that the seemingly static end-products of the interaction between Greek and non-Greek groups, such as texts, images, and objects, were embedded in long-term discourses, and thus subject to continuously shifting processes.

Young people have to make their own way in the world; they have to give meaning to and find meaning in their lives. This is the field of religious education, which is provided by parents, religious leaders, or teachers of religion and worldviews. One of the most important challenges is to educate children in their own religion, emphasizing that religion's tolerant and peaceful side and to teach children about the beliefs of other traditions. An even more important challenge is to teach them to live together in peace and justice. This volume deals with religious education in Christianity and Islam in specific countries. Scholars in religious education need to know more about the ways in which Muslims and Christians perceive and practice their respective forms of religious education and explore methods that help young people develop their religious identity in accordance with their tradition-and also meet with comrades from other traditions, as the two young Gambian and Dutch women shown on the cover do. This volume explores the field of Christian and Islamic education. Muslim and Christian scholars from Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, Indonesia, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands describe various aspects of religious education at school, at home, in the mosque and church, via the media and in peer groups. The papers were presented and discussed at an authors' conference at VU University Amsterdam, organized in close collaboration between the staff of its Centre of Islamic Theology and other scholars in religious education, and the Islamic Universities League in Cairo. The authors describe actual processes of education, reflect on religious identity formation and respect for other people and the influences from home, school, mosque, and church, the media and "the street."

Hellenistic Alexandria: Celebrating 24 Centuries' presents the proceedings of a conference held at the Acropolis Museum in Athens, on December 13-15, 2017, and includes high-level dialogues and philosophical discussions between international experts on Hellenistic Alexandria. The goal was to celebrate the 24 centuries which have elapsed since its foundation and the beginning of the Library and the Museum of Alexandria. The conference was divided into two parts, to include in the first part archaeology, history, philosophy, literature, art, culture and legal issues and in the second part science, medicine, technology and environment.
