This volume explores the use and interpretation of the Bible in the Dead Sea Scrolls and associated apocryphal, early Christian and rabbinic literature. Interpretive interests, techniques and traditions are examined in many types of ancient works: rewritten bibles, pseudepigrapha, legal codes, prayers, sapiential texts, admonitions and historical treatises. The authors highlight the contribution of the new finds from the Judean Desert to such major issues as attitudes to the Bible and the Law in antiquity, continuity and innovation vis a vis the biblical world, common and unique dimensions of interpretation among different groups in the Second Temple and Rabbinic periods in particular, the Qumran sectarians and their opponents, New Testament authors and rabbinic Sages.

Sins and sinners : perspectives from Asian religions /

Asian religious traditions have always been deeply concerned with \'sins\' and what to do about them. As the essays in this volume illustrate, what Buddhists in Tibet, India, China or Japan, what Jains, Daoists, Hindus or Sikhs considered to be a \'sin\' was neither one thing, nor exactly what the Abrahamic traditions meant by the term. \'Sins\'could be both undesireable behavior and unacceptable thoughts. In different contexts, at different times and places, a sin might be a ritual infraction or a violation of a rule of law; it could be a moral failing or a wrong belief. However defined, sins were considered so grave a hindrance to spiritual perfection, so profound a threat to the social order, that the search for their remedies through rituals of expiation, pilgrimage, confession, recitation of spells, or philosophical reflection, was one of the central quests of the religions studied here.

Calvinism must be assigned a significant place among the forces that have shaped modern European culture. Even now, despite its history of religious fragmentation and secularization, Europe continues to bear the marks of a pervasive Calvinist ethos. The character of that ethos is, however, difficult to pin down. In this volume, many of the traditional scholarly conundrums about the relationship between Calvinism and the cultural history of Europe are revisited and re-investigated, to see what new light can be shed on them. For example, how has the ethos of Calvinism, or more broadly the Reformed tradition, affected economic thinking and practice, the development of the sciences, views on religious toleration, or the constitution of European polities? In general, what kind of transformations did Calvinism's distinct spirituality bring about? Such questions demand painstaking and detailed scholarly work, a fine sample of which is published in this volume.

The re-emergence of the religious in secular domains has led prominent scholars such as Jürgen Habermas and Charles Taylor to speculate about a new 'postsecular' age. The alleged shift from the secular to the postsecular is most visible in the spheres of urban public space, governance and civil society. The Sentinel Islanders : The Most Isolated Tribe in the World /

The Sentinel Islanders, also called the Sentinelese, are one of the five Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) of the Andaman and Nicobar islands. They live in the North Sentinel Island of the Andaman group of Islands situated in the Bay of Bengal. They are, perhaps, the only truly isolated hunter-gatherer tribal community in the world today. Of the five PVTGs, the Sentinel Islanders are usually described as the 'most uncontacted' and 'most reclusive' people on earth. Till today, this group has maintained their independent existence, repelling all attempts to directly engage with and contact them. They remained steadfast in opposition to all the efforts of the colonial and post-colonial administration to contain them with the might of their bows and arrows. Incredibly, they also managed to survive the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, which had a devastating effect on the people of the lsland groups. Curiosity about their lifestyles has endured all these years in all sections of society since 1771, when an East India Company vessel sailing past their island spotted the presence of lights there. It was, however, in November-December 2018, that the Sentinelese received international attention, when an American national went missing after having ventured to encroach upon their land. It was alleged that a Sentinelese killed him after warning him twice to leave the island. This has further reinforced the image of ferocity of a people who do not want any interference from the outside world in their subsistence patterns and long to remain as the 'masters of their island'. In this book, an attempt has been made to understand their way of life from an anthropological perspective in the light of available historical and anthropological evidences.

As reflected in the title "From Microcosm to Macrocosm : Individual households and cities in Ancient Egypt and Nubia", both a micro-approach introducing microhistories of individual sites according to recent archaeological fieldwork incorporating interdisciplinary methods as well as general patterns and regional developments in Northeast Africa are discussed. This combination of research questions on the micro-level with the macro-level provides new Information about cities and households in Ancient Egypt and Nubia and makes the book unique. Architectural studies as well as analyses of material culture and the new application of microarchaeology, here especially of micromorphology and archaeometric applications, are presented as case studies from sites primarily dating to the New Kingdom (Second Millennium BC).
The rich potential of well-preserved but still not completely explored sites in modern Sudan, especially as direct comparison for already excavated sites located in Egypt, is in particular emphasised in the book. Settlement archaeology in Egypt and Nubia has recently moved away from a strong textual approach and generalised studies to a more site-specific approach and household studies. This new bottom-up approach applied by current fieldwork projects is demonstrated in the book. The volume is intended for all specialists at settlements sites in Northeast Africa, for students of Egyptology and Nubian Studies, but it will be of interest to anyone working in the field of settlement archaeology.

But it will also appeal to the general reader interested in a key formative period for the emergence of pre-modern India. It examines our turbulent social, religious, political and economic transition during the sixth through ninth centuries. The author focuses intensely on a single, tell-tale form of evidence, namely the enigmatic base gold dinara coins of the descendants of the Kidarite Huns. By thoroughly investigating the coins in their temporal, geographic and physical contexts, he teases out a fascinating story with three facets: treasure (gold and silver mineral wealth, as well as the spiritual wealth of pilgrimage centres sacred to Buddhism and Hinduism); trade (bearing horses, precious metals and pilgrims alike over the great caravan roads between Central Asia and north India); and tradition (the minting traditions of banking communities, the rulership traditions of royal lineages, and the spiritual traditions of religious art). Through its detailed analysis, the book clears up a great deal of confusion about the monetary systems of ancient Kashmir, the Punjab foothills and the Gangetic plains, from c. 590 to 820. With a large body of new metallurgical tests, the book defines, classifies and attributes this challenging series of trimetallic coins, revealing for the first time the money of Punjab's hill kingdoms nestled in the Siwalik valleys. Along the way, it prepares the groundwork for a new perspective on the role of hard money in early medieval economies, revealing preliminary evidence that the empire of the great Harshavardhana may have had a broadly-used coinage, contrary to expectations of the feudal model.
