The notion of subjectivity is one of the most fundamental notions for modern philosophy that only gains in importance in present-day discussions. This volume gathers essays from both young and senior researchers that examine which role subjectivity plays in both classical and contemporary phenomenology. The essays discuss the importance of a phenomenological account of subjectivity for the nature and the status of phenomenology but they also discuss how the phenomenological account of the subject offers new perspectives on themes from practical philosophy and from the philosophy of mind. Sanctifying Texts, Transforming Rituals: Encounters in Liturgical Studies explores the dynamics of Christian ritual practices in their relation to a broader cultural framework. The nineteen essays, written in honour of the liturgist Gerard A.M. Rouwhorst (Tilburg University), study liturgical developments in times of transition, in which religious and cultural changes set the development of worship practices in motion. Given the current mainstream landscape of philosophy, one might assume that phenomenology is merely a tradition, a perspective, or a method of philosophizing among others. Likewise, one might assume that ontology and metaphysics-despite being concerned with everything and anything there is-are just subfields of philosophy, such that one could engage in philosophy without engaging in ontology or metaphysics. This volume rejects both assumptions. Instead, it situates phenomenology, particularly in the context of the English-speaking world, in the philosophical tradition that attempts to achieve a unitary concept of philosophy as such, everywhere animated by ontological and metaphysical questions. The essays collected here attend first to the seminal determination of the concepts in Husserl and Heidegger, then to reformulations by Merleau-Ponty, Levinas, Derrida, and Deleuze, challenging standard narratives about the end of metaphysics and the limits of philosophy as phenomenology.

There is a long tradition in classical scholarship of reducing the Hellenistic period to the spreading of Greek language and culture far beyond the borders of the Mediterranean. More than anything else this perception has hindered an appreciation of the manifold consequences triggered by the creation of new spaces of connectivity linking different cultures and societies in parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. In adopting a new approach this volume explores the effects of the continuous adaptations of ideas and practices to new contexts of meaning on the social imaginaries of the parties participating in these intercultural encounters. The essays show that the seemingly static end-products of the interaction between Greek and non-Greek groups, such as texts, images, and objects, were embedded in long-term discourses, and thus subject to continuously shifting processes.

The Coming of Consumer Society /

The present volume adds momentum to the ongoing discourse on consumerism in India and offers a fresh perspective by arguing that India is not just a consumer market but a consumer society in the making. There is no consensus on the birth, place and context of a consumer society amongst historians. And for scholars of contemporary social life, consumer societies, till recently were held to be akin to societies in the late stage of capitalism or those having completed their transition from feudalism to post-industrialism. However, given the processes of globalization and liberalization of new global economic order, consumerism as an ideology, a world view and a practice is fast 'coming of age' in other societies across the globe. Hence, the earlier intellectual lexicon stands replaced by a new consumer epistemology signalling the coming of new consumer societies in hitherto unimagined locales such as India.
