Ritual imagination : a study of tromba possession among the Betsimisaraka in eastern Madagascar /

Ritual Imagination is a study of spirit possession and ritual dynamics. Based on fieldwork in eastern Madagascar, Hilde Nielssen shows how tromba possession works as a flexible and fluid force, whose ritual imaginary playfully draws together elements from radically different cultural and social domains, thereby constituting human realities and creating ways of relating to changing and disjunctive circumstances. Tromba's strength lies in its fluid capacities to relate to ongoing social change by altering its own practices, while at the same time continuing to heal person and cosmos. The book critically addresses the still dominant perspective in anthropology, where rituals are understood as representations of culture and society. Using tromba as a pivotal case in the critique of ritual as representation, this book offers a fresh perspective on ritual and spirit possession.

"The site of Douch had never been excavated at the time Serge Sauneron, director of the IFAO, began de-sanding the area of the temple of the early Roman Empire in 1976. Before reaching the paved floors, the excavations revealed several levels of occupation under the Late Roman Empire. These campaigns and those subsequent, up until 1994, revealed the existence of several buildings preceding Roman times, such as a Ptolemaic brick sanctuary beneath the temple and other even older buildings, at the least dating back to the Persian time.The history of the archaeological works is followed by six chapters on the architecture of the buildings in the area: the enclosures and their doors, the courtyards and their fittings, the temple and its column porch, the chapel attached to a fault in the ground, probably a place of primitive worship. The text is amply illustrated with maps, sections and elevations. Examination of the construction details enabled to determine the chronological succession of the buildings, and to explain some anomalies or to restitute some of the parts destroyed.The dating of the main brick buildings and their remodeling was possible thanks to Michel Wuttmann who, from 2007 to 2011, had plants extracted from the walls, which were then collected and analyzed by radiocarbon. More than a hundred years ago on 27 September 1914, a bunch of weary Indians reached Calcutta on a Japanese steamship called the Komagata Maru from Vancouver, Canada. This was the 'bloody' climax of one of the most fascinating episodes in the Indian national movement that continues to inspire popular culture and scholars even today. The present compilation not only gives a complete profile of the Komagata Maru incident but throws light on the Descriptive Roll of Sikhs and Punjabis arrested in connection with the event. The saga of the Komagata Maru is a significant reminder of the character of the criminal exploitation which the colonizers generally inflicted on the people they colonized. The notion of civilizational superiority of the Whites was intrinsic to Imperialism. The commemoration of Komagata Maru is an occasion to explore and investigate how the ruling groups come to imagine and construct 'Others' and 'Undesirables'. Viewing the Komagata Maru project as a 'deliberate plot to foment sedition' pointed to another kind of argument, widely contrary to the perception and objective of the passengers and Baba Gurdit Singh. Over the years the tragic journey of Komagata Maru has inspired South Asian poets and playwrights, historians and journalists to reconstruct and memorialize the event from multiple perspectives.
