The main hypothesis of the volume is that globalization is a cultural phenomenon. Therefore, the book offers an explanation of how globalization emerged from cultural exchange between groups, nations, and religions. The articles in this volume register the thematically multi-dimensional and theoretically complex contribution of Polish research on globalization. Polish debates on globalization, as presented in this book, on the one hand reflect international disputes and controversies, and on the other hand address local issues. As their crucial feature, the articles in this volume exhibit a special sensitivity to historical and contemporary cultural contexts. They do not approach globalization as an abstract process, instead exploring it through the lens of clearly defined factors.

Justice as an aspect of the polis idea in solon's political poems : a reading of the fragments in light of the of the researches of new classical archaeology.

This book examines the meaning of justice or dike in the political poems of Solon from a new interpretative perspective. The first two chapters argue that neither standard historical nor literary treatments have provided an adequate foundation for understanding Solon's dike . The main defect lies in an inability to connect Solon's concrete political work with his poetic perceptions. The book's central proposal is that the polis idea, from new classical archaeology, provides an objective standard for an interpretation of Solon's dike , which remedies this defect. The third chapter sets forth the polis idea, which becomes the measure for an examination, in the final two chapters, of Solon's view of dike . The book thus exhibits an interdisciplinary approach to Archaic poetry.

En mobilisant à la fois la tradition anglo-américaine et la tradition européenne, l'ouvrage se focalise davantage sur la question du moi et sur celle de l'agentivité ( agency ). La possibilité d'un dialogue entre ces deux traditions concernant la théorie de l'action en phénoménologie constitue l'originalité du volume. Phénoménologie de l'action presents in a very innovative way some of the different aspects debated today in the philosophy of action. Thanks to the renewal within the philosophy of mind concerning first-person knowledge, the analysis of the relation between the self and its actions has undergone a revival in recent years. Drawing from both the Anglo-American and the European tradition, this book focuses mainly on the relation between self and agency. The possibility of a dialogue between these two traditions concerning the theory of action from a phenomenological standpoint constitutes the originality of this volume.

Ethnic Relations in Plural Societies : Social, Economic and Political Dimensions /

One of the main legacies of slavery and indentured labour is the existence of multi-ethnic and multicultural societies in former tropical colonies of the European empires. After the abolition of slavery, the indentured labourers were brought to the plantation colonies in order to meet the need for cheap labour for the production of tropical goods. From the beginning, they faced a situation in which they were regarded as competitors for the freed slaves and/or the local population. At the same time, in various cases, the freed slaves and their descendants considered themselves as the indigenous people, and were treated as such by the colonial governments. In their perspective, the colonial governments spent too many resources on the immigration of foreign labourers, resources that could have been used to improve the socio-economic situation of the descendants of the former slaves. To this date, this historical past overshadows the relations between different ethnic groups in so called plural societies. This book deals with the relations between different ethnic groups in these societies and the challenges they meet to establish peaceful and democratic societies. The volume consists of chapters on these societies, such as South Africa, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Suriname.

Purity is a cultural construct that had a central role in the forming and the development of religious traditions in the ancient Mediterranean.
