La representation du divin dans les récits du Pentateuque : mediations syntaxiques et narratives /

Though several studies have already been devoted to biblical representations of God, the present research considers the position towards the divine they imply, on the basis of syntactic and narrative analysis. The book examines, in the stories of the Pentateuch, different appearances of the divine character: his speeches, as well as their modes of reporting; his actions, their mediations, and the points of view from which they are told; his perceptions and emotions, as well as the so-called omniscient narration; and some interpretations and distortions of his words. It appears that the Pentateuch presents the divine in an essentially mimetic way, mainly from the perspectives of other characters, portraying different human experiences and interpretations of divinity.

La mobilité des individus à travers le monde les expose à l'intervention désordonnée de multiples régimes juridiques et autorités juridictionnelles. Des incertitudes en résultent, parfois des blocages ou des pesanteurs injustifiées. A travers le droit « international », les pouvoirs politiques ont conçu des modes de coopération entre autorités parallèlement compétentes et d'articulation de leurs points de vue. Ce savoir-faire millénaire permet d'atténuer les risques de désordre et de paralysie au détriment des personnes privées. Sous le concept de cohérence, cet ouvrage étudie les techniques de résolution des conflits de lois, de juridictions ou d'autorités et leur évolution à mesure des transformations du matériau juridique. Non limités aux situations relevant du pur droit privé, ces mécanismes appréhendent aussi les discordances en droit public ou dans les domaines hybrides ; ils n'ignorent pas les régimes juridiques transnationaux et modes privés de règlement des différends (tel l'arbitrage). La cohérence est ici classiquement analysée dans les rapports horizontaux entre sphères juridiques indépendantes, puis dans l'axe vertical lorsque, exceptionnellement, des institutions œuvrent en surplomb des États et permettent, à travers leurs procédures, de questionner la rationalité du droit appliqué aux individus sur la scène mondiale.

Redonner vie à une collection : les terres cuites communes du Fort La Tour /

Research on common earthenware from the first half of the 17th century is very elementary, when it exists at all. This study seeks to bring back to life the ceramics, the inhabitants and the site where the objects were used. The collection includes 1602 fragments from 277 common earthenware objects coming from the period of occupation of Fort La Tour (1631-1645) in Portland Point, New Brunswick. These pieces were mostly made in France, but some are probably of English origin. Mostly through the visual identification of the features included in the ceramic body, a classification system was developed with four main groups, 28 types, and 10 variations. With this classification system, earthenware objects were able to be grouped based on the activities for which they were used and related to their uses and functions.

Clément d'Alexandrie (150-215 Ap. J.-C.) est l'un des penseurs les plus brillants des premiers siècles chrétiens. Ce livre aborde un sujet peu étudié à ce jour, à savoir sa pensée sur l'Église. C'est pourtant un sujet récurent de ses ouvrages, où il réfléchit longuement sur l'Église à partir de l'être et la mission du Logos divin. L'analyse du discours de Clément sur l'Église permet donc de revisiter les intuitions principales de sa christologie tout en apportant un éclairage sur sa perception de l'identité chrétienne à une époque où celle-ci est encore en construction. Clement of Alexandria (AD 150-215) is one of the most brilliant thinkers of the early Christian centuries. His teaching, steeped as much in the Bible as in Greek thought, reveals to us the nature of the debates in the early days of the expansion of Christianity. This book deals with a subject little studied to this day, namely his thoughts on the Church. Yet it is a recurring subject in his works, where he reflects at length on the Church from the point of view of the being and the mission of the divine Logos. Analysis of Clement's discourse on the Church therefore makes it possible to revisit the main intuitions of his Christology while shedding light on his perception of Christian identity at a time when it is still under construction.

Starting from a comparison between the isolated data and the systems of P, the Chronist and Ezekiel, the study stresses the specificity of each system, and tries to point out the distinctive features of Israel's sacrificial cult. The concluding chapter sketches the evolution of the sacrificial cult. An exhaustive index of textual references offers an overview of all Old Testament passages relating to sacrifice.

Fergus Millar's works have renewed our approach of the Roman world. The Maccabean Martyrs, Jewish heroes from the era of the persecution of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, were incorporated into the IVth century Christian martyrology. Two Church Fathers, Gregory Nazianzen and John Chrysostom wrote panegyrics in their honour, which are studied and translated in this book. The first part shows how, since the beginning, the Church referred to these martyrs as biblical examples known through 2 and 4 Maccabees. The second part describes, through the eulogies of Gregory and John, the circumstances surrounding the creation of the Christian Feast. The third part analyzes the preaching built around the story of the Maccabean martyrs, where, following the 4 M model, Eleazar, the seven brothers and their mother are established as examples of virtue and asceticism for the edification of all Christians. The book investigates an original aspect of the cult of martyrs : the christianisation of jewish martyrs killed defending the Law, and sheds light on the sometimes contradictory preaching choices of Gregory and John to respond to the jewish roots of this cult. *** Les martyrs Maccabées, héros juifs de la persécution d'Antiochus IV Epiphane, furent intégrés dans le martyrologe chrétien au IVè siècle. Was there, in different periods of Egyptian history, a clearly defined political and cultural western border? How was the western limit of Egyptian territory perceived and experienced by the central power and local populations? Keeping these questions in mind, the proceedings of the international conference held in Cairo on 2-3 December 2017 explore the western margins of Egypt along four lines: 1) definition, conception, representation; 2) occupation, control, administration; 3) economy; 4) populations, networks, religion. They allow us to sketch a portrait of a key region of Egypt from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. Once the phase of territorial fixation of the Egyptian state was completed, the low population density in the Western Delta and the absence of a real threat did not encourage the definition and defense of an actual western border. However, the arrival of new Libyan groups at the gates of Egypt during the Ramesside period was a turning point. The emergence of the Saite Dynasty placed this region in a new dynamic--that of border with the Greek world and pioneer front--which prefigured the development of this territory under the Ptolemies. During the Roman period, Egypt was part of an empire that extended much further west and whose decision-making center was outside the country, which changed the status of the western limit. Still, the nomadic incursions into the Great Oasis at the end of the period show that the question of the frontier remained an issue. This issue continued after the Arab conquest when Egypt became again part of a vast empire.

In recent years, there has been an increased interest in the study of the concept of time in the Ottoman Empire. Many existing studies focused on the technical aspects, e.g. the measure of time, and the instruments to do this (like clepsydras, water clocks, hourglasses, and sundials found on the facades of mosques and medreses). Other aspects were neglected, like the various Ottoman experiments with time and the Ottomans' conceptions of time. This collective volume addresses several of these forgotten aspects of the political, social and cultural modalities of time in the Ottoman Empire.

"17 novembre 1869 : le canal de Suez est inauguré en grandes pompes, en présence de l'impératrice Eugénie. Mais la construction du canal, débutée en 1859, ne s'est pas faite sans heurts. Ferdinand de Lesseps et la France ont en effet bataillé durant de longues décennies avant de convaincre l'Empire ottoman, dont l'Égypte n'était qu'une province, de son bien-fondé. Accusée d'être un instrument de colonisation de l'Égypte au profit de la France, la Compagnie universelle du canal de Suez, "État dans l'État", est très critiquée par l'Empire ottoman. Celui-ci craint qu'un canal maritime séparant matériellement l'Égypte du reste de l'Empire rende illusoire la souveraineté du sultan sur ce territoire, et ouvre la porte à une domination occidentale inacceptable. Cet ouvrage ne propose pas une énième histoire du canal de Suez ni sur le plan technique, ni sur le plan diplomatique, mais il entend combler une lacune considérable : l'étude de cette histoire du point de vue ottoman, des projets à l'exploitation en passant par la construction du canal. It appears that religious authority is not limited to traditional authorities and is continuously confronted with limits, whether theological, political, social or institutional.

In December 2009, an international congress was held at Ghent University in order to investigate, exactly 20 years after the 36th RAI "Mésopotamie et Elam", the present state of our knowledge of the Elamite and Susean society from archaeological, philological, historical and geographical points of view. The multidisciplinary character of this congress illustrates the present state of research in the socio-economic, historical and political developments of the Suso-Elamite region from prehistoric times until the great Persian Empire. Because of its strategically important location between the Mesopotamian alluvial plain and the Iranian highlands and its particular interest as point of contact between civilizations, Susa and Elam were of utmost importance for the history of the ancient Near East in general.

Integration in the empire under the political control of the city of Rome, her princeps, and the different authorities in the provinces and cities includes processes of inclusion and exclusion. These multifaceted processes take place at various levels in society and at different places, over a long period of time. In this volume, these processes are analysed and reflected on from different perspectives. Juridical, political, social and religious points of view are articulated, elaborating on epigraphic, literary, juridical and numismatic evidence. Notions of personal and collective identities have been linked to relevant Roman realia, so that various contents of Romanitas can be defined through contextualization.
