The reasons for South Africa's full and rapid post-apartheid embrace of neoliberal economic policy remain controversial. Drawing on the author's own participation in policy debates, this volume establishes there were alternatives available that were either dismissed or not even considered. Explanations for policy failings have to be sought in determinants such as globalisation, financialisation, capital flight, corporate restructuring and Black Economic Empowerment. The text offers extensive surveys of relevant literature including the developmental state, industrial and social policy, privatisation, trade policy, the Harvard School, comparative experience and the deficiencies in the country's National Development Plan and New Growth Path.

Il propose une approche globale des reconstructions érudites et des utilisations polémiques de la Renaissance centrée sur une relecture politique de la pratique historiographique, ainsi que sur ses réseaux personnels, académiques et transnationaux. During the nineteenth century, the history of philosophy established itself in France as a central discipline within the academic institutions. This process, which rested on the intellectual and political influence of Victor Cousin (1792-1867), coincided with the development of an interpretative scheme that gave the Renaissance as philosophical epoch a controversial status characterized by conceptual inferiority. This volume sheds light on the ideological implications of the debates on the Renaissance in nineteenth-century France. It offers a comprehensive approach to the scholarly reconstructions and polemical uses of the Renaissance by developing a political and transnational rereading of the nineteenth-century French practices of the history of philosophy.

In Italy, anti-Protestantism became a relevant motif of reactionary polemics during the Risorgimento and the post-unification period in the 19th century. Attenuated around 1900, the anti-Protestant offensive resumed after the First World War. Between the early 1920s and the mid-1950s, the hostility of the Catholic Church towards the Protestant presence and mission in Italy became a significant social and political phenomenon. It succeeded in influencing the attitude of the Italian state and the legislation on religious freedom itself. Reconstructing Catholic anti-Protestantism, Paolo Zanini shows that the attitude towards Protestant denominations was one of the features of continuity between Fascism and the first decade of the post-war Republic.
