L'évolution de la figure du bon prince sous le Haut-Empire
:
In Pouvoir impérial et vertus philosophiques. L'évolution de la figure du bon prince sous le Haut-Empire , Anne Gangloff offers a thorough analysis of the Roman political thought, examining the way in which the good prince is described from the Julio-Claudians to the end of the third century. Her focus is on the evolution of the prince's virtues, on the communication of these virtues, and on relationships between the prince and the intellectuals in his entourage. She highlights the emergence of a real tradition of Roman political thought, which influenced more or less emperors themselves.

Politics of Public Opinion : Local Councils and People's Assemblies in Korea, 1567-1894 /
:
Eugene Y. Park's annotated translation of a long-awaited book by Kim Ingeol introduces Anglophone readers to a path-breaking scholarship on the widening social base of political actors who shaped "public opinion" ( kongnon ) in early modern Korea. Initially limited to high officials, the articulators of public opinion as the state and elites recognized grew in number to include mid-level civil officials, State Confucian College students, all Confucian literati ( yurim ), influential commoners who took over local councils ( hyanghoe ), and the general population. Marshaling evidence from a wealth of documents, Kim presents a compelling case for the indigenous origins of Korean democracy.

Power, politics, and the cults of Isis : proceedings of the Vth International Conference of Isis studies, Boulogne-sur-Mer, October 13-15, 2011 /
:
In the Hellenistic and Roman world intimate relations existed between those holding power and the cults of Isis. This book is the first to chart these various appropriations over time within a comparative perspective. Ten carefully selected case studies show that "the Egyptian gods" were no exotic outsiders to the Hellenistic and Roman Mediterranean, but constituted a well institutionalised and frequently used religious option. Ranging from the early Ptolemies and Seleucids to late Antiquity, the case studies illustrate how much symbolic meaning was made with the cults of Isis by kings, emperors, cities and elites. Three articles introduce the theme of Isis and the longue durée theoretically, simultaneously exploring a new approach towards concepts like ruler cult and Religionspolitik .

The politics of honour in the Greek cities of the Roman empire /
:
The volume The Politics of Honour in the Greek Cities of the Roman Empire , co-edited by Anna Heller and Onno van Nijf, studies the public honours that Greek cities bestowed upon their own citizens and foreign dignitaries and benefactors. These included civic praise, crowns, proedria , public funerals, honorific statues and monuments. The authors discuss the development of this honorific system, and in particular the epigraphic texts and the monuments through which it is accessible. The focus is on the Imperial period (1st-3rd centuries AD). The papers investigate the forms of honour, the procedures and formulae of local practices, as well as the changes in local honorific habits that resulted from the integration of the Greek cities in the Roman Empire.

L'émancipation des femmes Madare : l'impact du projet administratif et missionnaire sur une société africaine, 1900-1960 /
:
This work is concerned with the civil authorities' and missionaries' project of the emancipation of Madarε women in the west of Burkina Faso between 1900 and 1960. The work deals successively with the place of women in the pre-colonial village community, the beginning of contacts with European civilisation, the project's initiators' assessment of the women's living conditions and their willingness to change them, the means and methods used to this end and the limitations of the project at the time of independence in 1960. The fruit of several years of research by a historian, who is a member of the ethnic community, this work is a documentary reference work with multiple entries and an index. It will be of interest to Africans concerned with the socio-political evolution of their continent, researchers interested in the history of missions and the African churches, and anyone concerned with the whole question of women in modern societies.

Leadership and Initiative in Late Republican and Early Imperial Rome /
:
What does it mean to be a leader? This collection of seventeen studies breaks new ground in our understanding of leadership in ancient Rome by re-evaluating the difference between those who began a political action and those who followed or reacted. In a significant change of approach, this volume shifts the focus from archetypal "leaders" to explore the potential for individuals of different ranks, social statuses, ages, and genders to seize initiative. In so doing, the contributors provide new insight into the ways in which the ability to initiate communication, invent solutions, and prompt others to act resonated in critical moments of Roman history.

Amazighité et contestations au Maroc /
:
:
This book investigates a corpus of royal inscriptions and literary texts, with special emphasis on those that are mythological and biblical, stretching over several millennia from the early days of Sumer to the Biblical period, in order to determine the ways in which the concept of water was used, in particular the way it functions in the political and theological ideology of the time. Three literary motifs are the object of a careful study : the crossing of water, the flood and the water of abundance. Though their study shows diversity in evolution, transmission and reception, it appears that their function is common at the heart of the Mesopotamian political theology of royal mediation.

The encounter of Eastern Christianity with early Islam /
:
The theme of this book is the early encounters between Christianity and Islam in the eastern provinces of the Byzantine Empire and in Persia from the beginnings of Islam in Mecca to the time of the Abbasids in Bagdad. The contributions in this volume deal with crucial subjects of political and theological dialogue and controversy that characterized the varying responses of the Christian communities in the Byzantine Eastern provinces to the Islamic conquest and its subsequent impact on Byzantine society and history. This volume opens up new research perspectives surrounding the confrontation of Christianity with the early theological and political development of Islam. The present publication emphasizes the importance of the study of the beginnings and the foundations of the relations between the two religions.

The Taifa Kingdoms : Reconsidering 11th-Century Iberia /
:
The 11th century has traditionally been regarded as a turning point in the evolution of medieval Iberia. The dismantling of the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba gave way to a process of political and territorial fragmentation that contributed to weakening Islamic power vis-a-vis the incipient Northern Christian kingdoms and ultimately leading up to the establishment of the Almoravid dynasty. The Taifa Kingdoms: Reconsidering 11th-century Iberia gathers contributions from a diverse group of Medieval Historians, Arabists, Art Historians and Archaeologist seeking to explore new approaches to understand one of the most complex and fascinating moments in al-Andalus. From political history, to socio-economic organization, and artistic and scientific activities, the book covers a wide range of topics and issues from fresh perspectives. Integration in Rome and in the Roman world : proceedings of the Tenth Workshop of the International Network Impact of Empire (Lille, June 23-25, 2011) /
:
Integration in the empire under the political control of the city of Rome, her princeps, and the different authorities in the provinces and cities includes processes of inclusion and exclusion. These multifaceted processes take place at various levels in society and at different places, over a long period of time. In this volume, these processes are analysed and reflected on from different perspectives. Juridical, political, social and religious points of view are articulated, elaborating on epigraphic, literary, juridical and numismatic evidence. Notions of personal and collective identities have been linked to relevant Roman realia, so that various contents of Romanitas can be defined through contextualization.

Adab and modernity : a "civilising" process? (sixteenth--twenty-first century) /
:
Adab is a concept situated at the heart of Arabic and Islamic civilisation. Adab is etiquette, ethics, and literature. It is also a creative synthesis, a relationship within a configuration. What became of it, towards modernity ? The question of the "civilising process" (Norbert Elias) helps us reflect on this story. During the modern period, maintaining one's identity while entering into what was termed "civilisation" ( al-tamaddun ) soon became a leitmotiv . A debate on what was or what should be culture, ethics, and norms in Middle Eastern societies accompanied this evolution. The resilient notion of adab has been in competition with the Salafist focus on mores ( akhlāq ). Still, humanism, poetry, and transgression are constants in the history of adab . Locating the Sharīʿa : Legal Fluidity in Theory, History and Practice /
:
The study of the sharīʿa has enjoyed a renaissance in the last two decades and it will continue to attract interdisciplinary attention given the ongoing social, political and religious developments throughout the Muslim world. With such a variety of debates, and a corresponding multitude of theoretical methods, students and non-scholars are often overwhelmed by the complexity of the field. Even experts will often need to consult multiple sources to understand these new voices and provide accessible answers to specialist and non-specialist audiences alike. This volume is intended for both the novice and expert as a companion to understanding the evolution of the field of Islamic law, the current work that is shaping this field, and the new directions the sharīʿa will take in the twenty-first/fifteenth century. Contributors are Khaled Abou El Fadl, Asma Afsaruddin Ahmad Ahmad, Sarah Albrecht, Ovamir Anjum, Dale Correa, Robert Gleave, Sohail Hanif, Rami Koujah, Marion Katz, Asifa Quraishi-Landes, David Warren and Salman Younas.

China in Contemporary Capitalism /
:
From a unique Global South Political Economy perspective, this volume showcases outstanding works on the economic, social, and political development of China. It covers topics such as the Chinese development model, the evolution of social classes, the country's projection on the global stage, and the recent technological dispute with the United States. It does so by avoiding the trap (particularly perilous in the case of China) of isolating the economy from politics. The authors demonstrate that without understanding the contradictory movements of these two dimensions in their historical evolution, it is impossible to grasp contemporary China. Contributors are: Esther Majerowicz, Carlos Aguiar de Medeiros, Isabela Nogueira, Edemilson Paraná, Valéria Lopes Ribeiro and Hao Qi.

The genesis of the Bábí-Baháʼí faiths in Shíráz and Fárs /
:
The Bábí and Baháʾí Faiths represent two of the most important religious movements of modern times. This book relates the story of the evolution of the Bábí-Baháʾí community, beginning with the birth of its founder, Siyyid ʾAlí-Muhammad, known as the Báb, in 1819 and then traced over the next century and a half in the city of his birth, Shíráz. Its author, Mírzá Habíbuʾlláh Afnán, was himself born in the house of the Báb, reared by the widow of the Báb, who shared with him many stories of the Báb's life, then spent nearly a year with Baháʾuʾlláh in the ʾAkka-Haifa area, and some ten years in close proximity to Baháʾuʾlláh's son ʾAbduʾl-Bahá. He served for the next half century as the hereditary custodian of the house of the Báb, and as such was uniquely qualified to tell the story of the Bábí-Baháʾí Faiths in the city of Shíráz in remarkable and moving detail.

The Aghlabids and their neighbours : art and material culture in 9th-century North Africa /
:
The first dynasty to mint gold dinars outside of the Abbasid heartlands, the Aghlabid (r. 800-909) reign in North Africa has largely been neglected in the scholarship of recent decades, despite the canonical status of its monuments and artworks in early Islamic art history. The Aghlabids and their Neighbors focuses new attention on this key dynasty. The essays in this volume, produced by an international group of specialists in history, art and architectural history, archaeology, and numismatics, illuminate the Aghlabid dynasty's interactions with neighbors in the western Mediterranean and its rivals and allies elsewhere, providing a state of the question on early medieval North Africa and revealing the centrality of the dynasty and the region to global economic and political networks.
