Space, Narrative, and Historical Imagination in Livy's Ab Urbe Condita /

The surviving books of Livy's Ab Urbe Condita (written ca. 30 - 15 BCE), narrate the origins of Rome, the gradual growth of the city, and its rise to Mediterranean hegemony. This monograph reads Livy's work as, among other things, a narrative about space - the space of the city and the space of the world which Rome strives to conquer and control. Using a narratological approach, it analyses how the text constructs the settings of historical events through an interplay of historical information, literary or conventional elements, and spatial semantics. In this way, it sheds light on Livy's interpretation of politics, empire, conquest, and Roman identity.

This book is the fifth volume of selected papers from the Central European Pragmatist Forum (CEPF). The CEPF was founded in 2000 to provide an opportunity for American and European specialists in American philosophy to share their work with one another and to develop an understanding of the contemporary applications of the American philosophical traditions. The current volume deals with the general questions of identity and social transformation. Papers are organized into sections on the Transformation of Pragmatism, Metatheoretical conditions for Identity Transformation, the Fluidity of Identity, Transforming Self, Transforming Society, Art and Transformation, Richard Rorty on the Transformation of Society and Self, and Pragmatism and Central Europe. The authors are among the leading specialists in American philosophy from universities across the US and in Central and Eastern Europe. Anthropology of Law in Muslim Sudan analyses the hybridity of law systems and the plurality of legal practices in rural and urban contexts of contemporary Sudan, shedding light on the complex relation between Islam and society. It is the outcome of the international research program ANDROMAQUE ( Anthropologie du Droit dans les Mondes Musulmans Africains et Asiatiques ), funded by the French ANR ( Agence National de la Recherche ) between 2011 and 2014. Crossing two disciplinary perspectives, anthropology and law, the present volume contains original fieldwork data on contemporary urban and rural Sudan. Focusing on two major domains, land property and courts, several case studies demonstrate the relevance of an approach based on "legal practices" to underline, first, the plurality and hybridity of law systems and the relative role of the Islamic reference in Sudanese society, and, secondly, the reshaping of legal behaviors and norms after the breaking point of South Sudan's independence in 2011.
