It is universally accepted that Jerusalem is a unique city. It stirs up strong emotions among adherents of various religions as it is the centre of three religions, and it is the subject of conflicting national aspirations of two peoples. The diverse attitudes and wishes associated with the city are expressed, inter alia , in certain documents. This collection presents the most important of these documents. This will help the reader to understand the difficulties and may assist in the search for solutions. There may be differences of opinion over historical facts and documents may be subject to differing interpretations. Anthropology of Law in Muslim Sudan analyses the hybridity of law systems and the plurality of legal practices in rural and urban contexts of contemporary Sudan, shedding light on the complex relation between Islam and society. It is the outcome of the international research program ANDROMAQUE ( Anthropologie du Droit dans les Mondes Musulmans Africains et Asiatiques ), funded by the French ANR ( Agence National de la Recherche ) between 2011 and 2014. This book is a collection of writings and speeches of M.C. Rajah, who was one of the great Dalit leaders of pre-lndependent India. Anyone interested in understanding the history of India's Dalit movement will find this book very valuable. M.C. Rajah was born in a Dalit family of Tamil Nadu in 1883 and till he died in 1943 he was in the forefront of the Dalit's struggle for equality, justice and rights. What is most important about him is that he was the first Dalit leader in the Madras Legislative Council and also the first Dalit leader in the Central Legislative Assembly. His commitment towards the cause of Dalits and particularly his efforts to make provision for education of Dalits drew the attention of the British government and he was conferred the title of Rai Bahadur in 1922. Being influenced by the Non-Brahmin movement in Tamil Nadu M.C. Rajah realized the importance of mobilizing Dalits whose interests in his opinion were not protected by Non-Brahmin leaders. Written in 1925 his book, The Oppressed Hindus , gives an account of the glorious history and tradition of Dalits in Tamil Nadu and the new identity given to them as 'Adi-Dravidas'. M.C. Rajah's representations to the British government, correspondence with Gandhiji and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and his speeches in the provincial and central legislatures for about twenty years provide valuable insights about his struggle for the empowerment of Dalits.

In the Arab world, people belong to kinship groups (lineages and tribes). Many lineages are named after animals, birds, and plants. Why? This survey evaluates five old explanations - "totemism," "emulation of predatory animals," "ancestor eponymy," "nicknaming," and "Bedouin proximity to nature." It suggests a new hypothesis: Bedouin tribes use animal names to obscure their internal cleavages. Such tribes wax and wane as they attract and lose allies and clients; they include "attached" elements as well as actual kin. To prevent outsiders from spotting "attached" groups, Bedouin tribes scatter non-human names across their segments, making it difficult to link any segment with a human ancestor. Young's argument contributes to theories of tribal organization, Arab identity, onomastics, and Near Eastern kinship.

Satyagraha, first coined, developed and practised in South Africa, continues to challenge and inspire individuals and peoples far and wide. With unrelenting conflicts across the world, leading to deaths, violence and displacements of families and communities, the need for social and political transformation and the moral quest for the harmony of all humanity is as pressing today as it ever was. The volume is significant as it forces us to not only deepen our critical understanding of the past, but also to know this past as the legacy from which we draw for the present and future. The essays here show that there has been a continual attempt to understand and grapple with the term 'Satyagraha'. Some have been at pains to remind adherents of the essence of Satyagraha. At the same time, there were those who modified and adapted Satyagraha according to their own understandings and objectives or who used the idea as a strategy rather than as an ideal. While some clung to the ideal of Satyagraha, others did not violate its principles through a lack of understanding, but felt that a purist interpretation was not feasible on the ground. The shifting and fluid differences on a wide spectrum among many who worked with Gandhi or with his concept of Satyagraha are reflected in the essays in this collection.
