The Dutch legacy : radical thinkers of the 17th century and the Enlightenment /

While Spinoza's impact on the early Enlightenment has always found due attention of historians of philosophy, several 17th-century Dutch thinkers who were active before Spinoza's Tractatus theologico-politicus was published have been largely neglected: in particular Spinoza's teacher, Franciscus van den Enden ( Vrye Politijke Stellingen , 1665), Johan and Pieter de la Court ( Consideratien van Staet , 1660, Politike discoursen , 1662), Lodewijk Meyer ( Philosophia S. Scripturae Interpres , 1666), the anonymous De Jure Ecclesiasticorum (1665), and Adriaan Koerbagh ( Een Bloemhof van allerley lieflijkheyd , 1668, Een Ligt schynende in duystere plaatsen , 1668). The articles of this volume focus on their political philosophy as well as their philosophy of religion in order to assess their contributions to the development of radical movements (republicanism / anti-monarchism, critique of religion, atheism) in the Enlightenment.

This volume promotes a pragmatic, anti-essentialist and anti-hegemonic approach to the problem of the definition of religion. It argues that definitions of religion are context-bound strategies for pursuing a variety of purposes, extra-academic as well as academic. Religions being immensely varied, complex and multi-functional phenomena, they need to be studied by several academic disciplines from many different perspectives. It is, therefore, legitimate and useful that many definitions of religions are developed. The volume has contributions from scholars in Philosophy of Religion, the Comparative Study of Religions, Anthropology of Religion, Sociology of Religion and Psychology of Religion. This book deals with the perception of the heritage of Greco-Roman antiquity by Polish poets, historians, philologists, thinkers, translators, and scholars after 1795 when the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth ceased to exist. Maciej Junkiert deals with the new political and social situation brought by the loss of independence, which prompted a rethinking of Polish intellectual traditions related to antiquity. He also examines how this process was influenced by the new vision of antiquity that was emerging in German, French, British, and other European countries from the mid-18th century onwards and was linked to the development of philology, ancient history, and the history of philosophy. This new vision of antiquity, which was a result of the dominance of historicism in the humanities, involved constructing an image of the past from the perspective of contemporary needs.
