In The Gospels in First Century Judaea experts of Greco-Roman Judaism employ their expertise to offer fresh and innovative interpretations of gospel texts. Each study examines closely a passage from one of the four canonical gospels in order to shed light on it from various pertinent subject areas (e.g., linguistics, archaeology, fine art). The studies presented in this volume follow on the heels of more than forty years of research into the Jewish backgrounds of the New Testament, with one innovative development, namely, reading and interpreting the gospels as accounts that originate in the first century Judaea and play a more integral role in the body of ancient Jewish literature.

The Caroline theologian Herbert Thorndike (1598-1672) was significant before and after the seventeenth-century Restoration of the Church of England. Thorndike's theological methodology engaged with ecclesiology, the government and ministry of the Church of England, the Eucharist and the Book of Common Prayer . This book features Thorndike's significant reflection on eucharistic theology, based on ancient realist models but recast for the present. The book argues that Thorndike's theological methodology was useful in its own time but also has currency for Anglican and ecumenical theology discourse, particularly in relation to ecclesiology, eucharistic theology and liturgical theology and practice.

From the eighth century onwards, Christians living under Islam have produced numerous apologetic and polemical works, aimed at proving the continuing validity of Christianity. Among these is the Legend of Sergius Baḥīrā, which survives in two Syriac and two Arabic versions, and appears here in edition and translation. Being a counterhistory of Islam, it reshapes early Muslim traditions about a monk recognizing Muḥammad as the final Prophet by turning this monk into Muhammad's tutor and co-author of the Qur'an. In response to Muslim triumphalist propaganda, it portrays Islam's political power as predestined but finite and unrelated to its religious message. This feature sets the legend apart from similar Christian accounts of the origin of Islam, East and West, which are reviewed in this study as well.

In Women and Property Rights in Indonesian Islamic Contexts , eight scholars of Indonesian Islam examine women's access to property in law courts and in village settings. In Contested Creations in the Book of Job: the-world-as-it-ought- and -ought-not-to-be Abigail Pelham reads the Book of Job both 'forwards'-examining the perspectives on creation presented by Job and his friends and corrected by God's authoritative voice from the whirlwind-and 'backwards,' demonstrating how the epilogue explodes readers' certainties, forcing a reappraisal of the characters' claims. The epilogue, Pelham argues, changes the book from one containing answers about creation to one which poses questions: What does it mean to make the world? Who has the power to create? If humans have creative power, is it divinely sanctioned, or has Job, acting creatively, set himself up as God's rival? Engaging more thoroughly with Job's ambiguity than previous scholars have done, Contested Creations explores the possibilities raised by these questions and considers their implications both within the book and beyond.
