Trade, Transport and Tanda : Shifting Identities of the Banjaras /

The Banjaras were primarily a nomadic group. During the reign of Alauddin Khalji they were organized to collect grains from the country-side for smooth running of the market reforms. Later, they became an indispensable part of the Mughal economy and acquired a very important role as transporters for the empire and even continued with the same status under the East India Company. Banjaras were not only the suppliers, traders or transporters they also served as the commissariat for the Mughals and John Company. The main items they transported were non perishable goods mainly; grains and salt. Based on Chittiyat, Arzdasht and Arshatta documents archived at Rajasthan State Archives, Bikaner and travelogues, this volume focuses not only on the role and organization of Banjaras and Tanda but also on the shifting identity of Banjaras from nomadic to criminal over a period of time. The introduction of railways in India drastically changed the fate of these born transporters of the empire. The change of regime and the introduction of a new mode of transport led to the marginalization of the Banjaras and their practical elimination from the economic activities of the subcontinent.

Once seen as an ultra-centralized structure, the Portuguese empire is now often portrayed as a headless entity, coaxed into action by restless overseas subjects. This book proposes a more nuanced approach. Through an in-depth analysis of imperial management structures and practices, this book shows that the military administration of Brazil rested on agreements with colonial polities: the Luso-Dutch war consolidated, for example, an extreme version of municipal autonomy. However, subsequent conflicts and the spectre of revolts expanded metropolitan intervention (long before we are told), although the service of colonial populations remained crucial for the Portuguese military forces.

This volume deals with the Assyrian and the Babylonian Empires and seeks to provide new data for the ways that enabled these states to govern efficaciously their vast territories and diverse populations across the ancient Middle East. With both states exerting and distributing power and authority from centre to periphery, the channels through which these were asserted are understood to be of key concern in order to assess the imperial structures. Elucidating the mechanisms of control, especially in view of the always fragile relations between the state centre and remote peripheries, has long been a major subject in the study on ancient empires.0The volume edited by Shuichi Hasegawa and Karen Radner is specifically concerned with tracing the Assyrian and Babylonian Empires? reach into and their hold over their more peripheral regions. The Sacred Mountain of Colombia's Kogi Indians /

The Kogi Indians of the Sierra Nevada, an isolated mountain massif of northern Colombia, have preserved much of their cultural heritage, notwithstanding the onslaught of outside influences. To the casual observer their austere and withdrawn way of life presents a picture of abject poverty but long-term ethnological study reveals dimensions of inner depth which are evidence of a very rich and cherished tradition going back to pre-Conquest times. Kogi cosmogony and cosmology, their religious philosophy, and their interpretation of nature, as described by men of priestly training, bear witness to a creative imagination of great power. This study tells us of their macrocosm and microcosm; the structure of the universe and the spinning of cotton thread; time-space concepts and the symbolism of a small gourd vessel; biological cycles and temple architecture, and all this within the compass of a sacred mountain which to the Kogi is the centre of the universe. The ethnological importance of this essay is equalled by its value to the Humanities, and opens a new dimension of Amerindian studies.
