In Taking on Practical Theology , Courtney T. Goto explores the regnant paradigm that shapes knowledge production and that preserves power, privilege, and historic communal injury even as scholars intend to enlighten and transform communities. Approaching "context" as a case study, Goto illumines how this commonly used, taken-for-granted concept is "idolized." Though practical theologians are sensitive to context, researchers often fail to consider how their own assumptive world dictates and influences their practices of research, teaching, and engaging in scholarly conversations. These practices unwittingly validate scholars who enjoy the most social capital while inflicting harm on both communities they research and on colleagues and students who do not fit (or fit less well) the norms of the majority.

Bledsoe also takes seriously the Elephantine context, suggesting that the social and political ethic evinced by the work would have resonated strongly with the Judean community in Achaemenid Egypt.

The Republican period was a time of radical change in which existing knowledge was questioned in light of newly introduced ideas. It seems puzzling that it was exactly during this period that the Chinese practice of spirit-writing, which had a history of more than a thousand years, experienced a boost in popularity. This book sets out to explain this puzzle. Focusing on the study of two newly founded redemptive societies, the Wushanshe and the Daoyuan, it shows how spirit-writing practitioners legitimized the practice by combining it with ideas and activities drawn from the fields of religion, Confucianism, and philanthropy. These legitimation strategies not only enabled spirit-writing practitioners to gain political acceptance, but also turned them into important actors in the social, cultural, and intellectual history of modern China.

The Mishnaic Sotah ritual : temple, gender and Midrash.

This study analyzes the specific textual formation of Mishna Sotah. Diverging significantly from its origins in the book of Numbers, the Mishnaic ritual was traditionally read by scholars as an \'ancient Mishna\', narrating an actual ritual practiced in the second temple. In contrast to this generally accepted view, this book claims that while Sotah does contain some traditions, its overall composition has a clear ideological and academic form. Furthermore, comparisons with parallel Tannaitic sources reveal the ideological redaction, which carefully selected only those opinions which support its rewriting of the ritual as a public punitive ritual, while rejecting all reservations and opposition to its specific punitive character - even ignoring the possibility of innocence of the suspected adulteress. The author's groundbreaking conclusion is that, regardless of the form the real ritual did or did not take at the temple, the specific Mishnaic ritual was (re)invented by the rabbis in the second century C.E. From its very inception, it was purely textual, reflecting rabbinic imagination rather than memory.

Having filched a little white bundle from under the noses of an apothecary's apprentice and his maid in London's Leadenhall Street, Defoe's Moll Flanders is sure that she will be "taken next time and be carry'd to Newgate and be Try'd for my Life". The likelihood of being arrested, tried and executed runs like an electric current through Moll's accounts of the many successful getaways that follow, and of how she negotiates her way out of the hands of her victims and would-be prosecutors, constables, magistrates and judges. These narratives cannot be understood in terms of the framework of law enforcement practice taken for granted by modern consumers of crime fiction and news reports. Crime, Justice, and Defoe brings to the surface assumptions embedded in both Moll Flanders and Colonel Jack about who might do or say what at a crime scene, before a J.P., in court, and during negotiations for a pardon, assumptions to which we are now culturally blind. For help with this, the book draws on social histories of crime and justice, on early modern prescriptive manuals, on magistrates' examinations of accused persons, and on reports of trials for property crime held at the Old Bailey in the early 1720s. It pays special attention to the changes taking place in law enforcement in Defoe's lifetime and asks how his fictions may have helped naturalise those changes, or hindered them. In the process, the book explores the multi-layered narrative techniques used to tell readers both what 'really' happened and how matters might - or should - have turned out differently.

By engaging families in taking charge of their affairs, restorative justice can reverse family violence. But the expansion of restorative programming into family violence is stymied by fears of setting family members at risk and heightening agency liability if harm results. How does this anthology counter these fears? In response, it provides two decades of studies documenting successes of a restorative approach with gendered and intergenerational violence. It offers feminist frameworks to explain how these successes are achieved. And finally, the author turns to cultural and religious messages from her own upbringing as a Quaker (Religious Society of Friends) to explain why a restorative approach makes lasting and just peace in homes.
